If a Google Translate live transcription is missing, first check that it was explicitly saved: on Android, finish the transcription, tap Save transcript at the top, then open the app menu and choose Saved transcripts. This list is a different feature from translation History. Google documents cloud-sync requirements for History, but its Transcribe instructions do not document transcript syncing or a recovery method for a saved item that later disappears.
Start by identifying which Google Translate feature failed
Google Translate has two similarly named places where text can appear. Transcribe turns ongoing speech into text and lets you save a transcript. History records translations and can sync translation activity to your Google Account. The controls, storage behavior and troubleshooting steps are not interchangeable.

| Feature | What it stores | Where Google says to look | Documented settings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transcribe → Saved transcripts | A completed spoken-language transcription that you deliberately save | Translate app menu → Saved transcripts | The Transcribe help page does not specify cloud sync, cross-device availability or a recovery process |
| Translation History | Translation activity, such as words, phrases and translated entries | History in the Translate app | Sign-in and Web & App Activity are required for cloud history; the device must be online |
Google’s Transcribe instructions describe the first feature. Its separate History instructions describe the second. Nothing on the History page says that its account settings repair a missing Saved transcript.

The official workflow applies to an Android phone or tablet. A transcript is not retained in the Saved transcripts list merely because words appeared on screen; you must complete the save action.

- Open the Google Translate app.
- Tap Speak, then choose Transcribe.
- Select the source language and the language you want to use for the translation or transcript.
- Allow microphone access when Android asks. Transcribe needs that permission to hear speech.
- Let the session run until you have finished capturing the speech.
- At the top of the screen, tap Save transcript.
- Open the Translate app menu and tap Saved transcripts.
Google states the save action directly: “After you have finished transcribing: At the top, tap Save transcript.” If you leave the screen, close the app or switch features before tapping that control, you have not followed the documented retention step.
Make a separate copy while the text is visible
When a saved transcript opens, Google’s Transcribe page says you can select text, copy it to the Android clipboard or share it with another Android app. Use one of those actions as soon as the transcript is accessible if the wording is important. A copy in another app is a precaution, not proof that Google Translate will restore the item later.
If transcription will not start or the Save option is absent
A failure to capture speech is different from a completed transcript that later disappears. Check these conditions before diagnosing a storage problem.

Microphone permission is blocked
Transcribe requires microphone permission. If Android denied it, the app cannot hear the speaker and no reliable transcript can be produced. Re-enable microphone access for Translate in Android’s app-permission settings, then reopen Transcribe and try again. The Google instructions identify permission as a prerequisite; they do not describe permission as a way to recover an already missing transcript.

The spoken language is unsupported
Google says that a disabled Transcribe button means the spoken language is unsupported. Choose a supported source language shown by the app. This explains why a session cannot begin; it does not explain a transcript that was successfully created and saved before vanishing.
The capture environment is poor
Google’s separate computer speech-input guidance recommends a quiet room, an external microphone or a higher input volume when the service reports that it is having trouble hearing you. Those suggestions concern speech capture on a computer, not the persistence or recovery of Android Saved transcripts. They can improve what the microphone hears but cannot reconstruct text that is no longer in the app.
If you tapped Save transcript but cannot see it
Use the exact retrieval location
Return to the Android Translate app menu and select Saved transcripts. Do not search only in History. The two lists are documented separately, and Google does not state that a Transcribe item is copied into translation History.
Confirm that the save completed
If the session ended abruptly, the app was closed or the top control was never tapped, there may be no saved item to retrieve. Run a short test transcription, allow microphone access, stop normally and tap Save transcript before leaving the screen. Then check the Saved transcripts menu immediately. This test distinguishes a repeatable save failure from a problem with an older item, although Google does not publish a diagnostic result for the test.

Do not assume cloud-history settings apply
History troubleshooting is often suggested because both functions are inside Translate. However, Google’s Transcribe documentation does not say that Saved transcripts use the same cloud store, account switch or Web & App Activity setting. Treat the Saved transcripts list as its own documented destination unless Google adds different instructions for your app version.
History is missing: the checks that actually apply
If the missing text is a translation entry rather than a Transcribe recording, use Google’s History guidance.
- Sign in to the Google Account you intend to use in Translate.
- Turn on Web & App Activity. Google says cloud history requires this setting. If activity is off, you can view and delete history but cannot create new entries in the cloud history.
- Check that the Android device is online and not in airplane mode.
- Open History and use the app’s Refresh action.
- Allow time for synchronization. Google says newly synced history entries may take a few hours to appear.
These steps address translation History. Google’s History page does not claim that they restore a missing item from Saved transcripts, so an absent transcript should not be treated as a delayed History entry without evidence that it was created as a translation.
What to do when a saved transcript disappears
Google’s official Transcribe page explains how to save, locate, copy and share a transcript, but it does not provide a recovery procedure for an item that has vanished. It also does not state whether Saved transcripts synchronize to another phone or tablet. That means there is no documented Google-supported sequence that can guarantee recovery from the Saved transcripts list.

Check for an accessible copy before changing the app
If the transcript still opens intermittently, select all available text and copy or share it to another Android app immediately. Avoid treating an outside copy as an automatic backup: it is a manual safeguard created by you. Community volunteers have suggested keeping copies in Google Docs or Sheets, but those suggestions are not Google’s official storage or recovery guarantee.
Be cautious when the app crashes
Community posts include reports of Saved transcripts that disappear, do not show and crash the app when opened. One thread is titled “Saved transcripts keep disappearing! Very bad app, I will uninstall it”; another reports crashes when trying to access saved transcripts. These are individual user reports, not prevalence data or confirmation of one shared cause. Google labels community content as potentially unverified or outdated.
If Translate crashes while opening a transcript, first preserve any text that you can still reach through copy or share. The reviewed Google documentation does not state that uninstalling, clearing app data or changing accounts will recover the item; without an external copy, those actions should not be presented as guaranteed recovery steps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsComputer speech input is a separate troubleshooting case
Google’s computer help covers microphone-based speech input, not Android Saved transcripts. It says microphone permission is required, language support varies by browser, Chrome is fully supported, and Safari and Edge have limited support. For the message “We’re having trouble hearing you,” Google recommends a quiet room, an external microphone or increasing the input volume. See Google’s speech-input help.
Best Value
Those browser and microphone notes can explain why a computer does not capture speech. They do not establish where an Android transcript is stored, whether it syncs between devices or how to restore one that has disappeared.
Conversation translation is not the same as a saved transcript
Google describes conversation translation as near-real-time translation while another person speaks a different language, with lectures and speeches among the examples. Its Translate Tips & Tricks page separately discusses saving translation history for word and phrase meanings. A conversation session may therefore produce translated output without creating a Transcribe item in Saved transcripts. Decide which output you need before troubleshooting: a spoken-language transcript, a translation-history entry or live conversation translation.
A practical decision tree
- No Transcribe button: check the selected spoken language; Google says an unsupported language disables the button.
- No words appear: check microphone permission and the capture conditions. These are speech-input issues.
- Words appeared but were never saved: repeat the session and tap Save transcript at the top before leaving it.
- Saved item is not in the list: open the app menu → Saved transcripts, not History. Google does not document a cloud-sync fix for this list.
- Translation entry is missing from History: sign in, enable Web & App Activity, go online, leave airplane mode, refresh and allow a few hours for synchronization.
- Saved item disappeared or causes a crash: copy or share any text that remains; treat community backup suggestions as precautions, because official recovery steps are not documented.
How to prevent losing important text
- Before a long session, verify microphone permission and that the spoken language is supported.
- After finishing, tap Save transcript while the transcript is still open.
- Open Saved transcripts immediately to confirm that the item appears.
- Select and copy or share critical text to a separate Android app instead of relying on one in-app list.
- For translation History, keep the correct account signed in and Web & App Activity enabled if you need cloud synchronization.
- Do not confuse a History delay of a few hours with a documented Saved-transcript sync process; Google has not described one.
What is established—and what is not
Google clearly documents the Android save path and the History synchronization requirements. It does not document where Saved transcripts are stored, whether they are available on another device, or how to recover one that disappears. Reports from the Help Community show that other users have encountered missing entries and crashes, including posts from June 2026, but they cannot establish how common the problem is or identify an official fix. The safest supported action is to save deliberately, verify the Saved transcripts list and keep a separate copy of any text you cannot afford to lose.
