First verify the Google Account and backup status, then use Review out-of-sync changes in Google Photos on that Android device. Also check whether the image is only stored locally, whether a different account is selected, or whether the edit was made in the phone maker’s gallery rather than Google Photos.
What is actually out of sync?
Google Photos has two related but different jobs. It can display files stored on the phone, and it can display photos and edits that have been backed up to a Google Photos Account. Your phone’s default gallery is a separate app, even when it shows many of the same files. A change can therefore be visible at photos.google.com or in Google Photos on another signed-in device without being reflected in the manufacturer’s gallery.

Google explicitly warns that “If you edit a photo on photos.google.com or a different device, the changes might not sync to the original device.” Its documented Android remedy is to open Google Photos on the original device and choose Review out-of-sync changes from the account menu. This procedure is described for Android and a device’s default gallery; it is not a promise that every third-party gallery or iPhone follows the same process.

Identify the mismatch before changing anything
| What you see | What it usually means | Best next action |
|---|---|---|
| The edited image appears at photos.google.com but the phone’s gallery shows the old version. | The cloud copy is available, but the Android default gallery has not reconciled its local copy. | On that Android phone, open Google Photos, tap the profile picture, and select Review out-of-sync changes. |
| A photo appears in Google Photos on one phone but not on another device. | The first phone may be showing a local-only file, or the devices may be signed in to different Google Accounts. | Check the selected account, the backup account, backup status, and whether the item is marked as backed up. |
| You edited the image in the phone maker’s gallery. | Google Photos may still contain the previous cloud version. Some special image types can be overwritten in place by the gallery. | Compare the copies first, then use the out-of-sync review where available. Do not delete either copy until you know which is current. |
| The image came from a messaging, download, or other app folder. | That device folder may not be selected for backup. | Go to Collections → On this device, find the folder, and review its backup setting. |
1. Confirm the Google Account and backup account
Every comparison must use the same account. A phone can be signed in to several Google Accounts while Google Photos is backing up to only one of them. The account selected in the profile menu on one device may not be the account selected on another.
- Open Google Photos on the device where the edit is missing.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner and note the account name.
- Repeat on the other phone, tablet, or browser session. Switch accounts if necessary so both devices are checking the intended account.
- Open Photos settings → Backup and verify the Backup account. If it is different from the account you expected, select the correct account before diagnosing the file.
Google’s backup guidance distinguishes the account being viewed from the account receiving backups. A visible local photo can remain on the phone even when the currently selected account has no cloud copy.
2. Read the backup status instead of trusting the thumbnail
In Google Photos, tap your profile picture and inspect the status shown near the top, or open Photos settings → Backup. Google lists states including Backup complete, Backing up, Backup is off, Waiting for connection/Wi‑Fi, and Preparing backup. Each state changes what another device can be expected to see.
Recommended Free Tools
- Backup complete: the account has finished processing the items it selected. You still need to confirm that this particular image is backed up.
- Backing up: the edit or original may not have reached the cloud yet. Keep the device connected and allow the process to finish.
- Backup is off: local files remain visible on the phone, but no new cloud copy is being created.
- Waiting for connection/Wi‑Fi: the app is waiting for the network condition required by its current settings.
- Preparing backup: Photos has not completed the preparation phase, so another device may still lack the item.
Open the individual photo and look for the app’s backed-up indicator or item details. Google’s Android troubleshooting guidance and backup instructions both stress checking status rather than assuming that a displayed thumbnail is online.

3. Reconcile an Android default gallery with Google Photos
Use this step when the cloud version is correct but the original Android phone’s built-in gallery is stale.
- Open Google Photos on the original Android device.
- Sign in to the same Google Account that contains the edited photo.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Review out-of-sync changes.
- Read each proposed change and follow the on-screen prompts to reconcile the Google Photos copy with the device gallery.
The exact wording or location of a menu can change as Google updates the app. If the option is absent, first confirm that you are using Google Photos on Android, that the phone’s default gallery is the app involved, and that the account is correct. This documented flow should not be presented as a universal fix for iOS or every third-party gallery.
After the review, reopen the default gallery and inspect the same file. Avoid making another edit during reconciliation; doing so can create a second conflict and make it harder to determine which version is authoritative.

Photos taken with the camera are not the only files people expect to sync. Screenshots, downloads, and images saved by messaging or social apps often live in separate Android folders. Google Photos can display those files locally even when the folder is excluded from backup.

- In Google Photos, open Collections → On this device.
- Locate the folder containing the missing image.
- Open Photos settings → Backup → Back up device folders.
- Enable the relevant folder if you want its contents uploaded to the selected account.
- Return to the photo and wait for its backed-up indicator before checking another device.
Google explains this folder behavior in Find items from other apps & devices. Turning on a folder backs up eligible files going forward; it does not mean that every copy already visible in the app was previously online.
5. Consider which app performed the edit
An edit made in Google Photos is handled differently from an edit made in the phone maker’s gallery. Google says that an edit in the device’s default gallery can leave the older cloud copy in Google Photos. In that situation, the phone may look correct locally while another device downloads or displays the earlier version from the account.
Some special photo types, including portraits, may be saved over the existing file by the default gallery instead of creating a clearly separate edited copy. That makes it especially important to identify the file and app involved before deleting anything.
- If Google Photos on the web shows the desired edit, treat that cloud version as the one to preserve while you reconcile the Android gallery.
- If only the phone’s gallery shows the edit, do not assume it has reached Google Photos. Check the item’s backup state and allow the gallery-to-Photos relationship to settle.
- Do not edit both copies repeatedly. Each additional change can produce another local or cloud version and obscure the original problem.
- Do not delete the old-looking copy until you have confirmed where the current edit is stored and whether it is backed up.
Google’s explanation of this behavior appears in Give your device photos access to Google Photos.

6. Understand what should sync across signed-in devices
When backup is enabled, Google says backed-up photos and their Google Photos edits are associated with the Google Photos Account and can be accessed on other signed-in devices. The cloud service is therefore the reliable handoff point between phones, tablets, and the web.
That statement does not guarantee that a phone manufacturer’s gallery will mirror every cloud edit immediately. The gallery may be reading a local file, using its own database, or retaining an earlier version. Google Photos and the default gallery can each be correct about the copy they are displaying while still disagreeing with each other.
For the cloud-side expectation, see Google’s Back up photos & videos — Android and Edit your photos — Computer. These pages describe backed-up content and Google Photos editing, not a guarantee for every manufacturer gallery.
Decision paths for common failures
The status says “Backup is off”
Turn on backup in Photos settings → Backup, confirm the destination account, and wait for the item’s backed-up indicator. Until then, another device cannot be expected to retrieve the local file from the account.
Best Value
The status is “Waiting for connection/Wi‑Fi”
Provide the connection required by your backup settings, keep Google Photos open long enough to resume, and check the status again. If the app remains paused, use Google’s Android troubleshooting steps at Troubleshoot photos not backing up.
The item is visible but has no backed-up indicator
Treat it as local until proven otherwise. Check its folder under Collections → On this device, enable that folder under Back up device folders if appropriate, and verify the account receiving backups.
The cloud edit is correct but the default gallery remains old
Run Review out-of-sync changes on the Android device. If the gallery still disagrees, preserve the cloud copy, avoid deleting files, and check whether the gallery created a separate local version.
The other device uses a different Google Account
Switch the profile in Google Photos on that device to the account shown as the backup account on the source phone. A different account can make a successful backup look missing.
How to prevent the mismatch next time
- Use one clearly identified Google Account for the devices you expect to share a library.
- After turning on backup, wait for Backup complete and verify the individual item before erasing a local original.
- Include important messaging, download, and screenshot folders under Back up device folders.
- For cross-device edits, prefer editing in Google Photos so the change is attached to the Photos Account rather than relying on a separate gallery database.
- Keep the original until you have checked both the cloud view and the destination device.
Limits of the documented fix
The specific Review out-of-sync changes workflow is documented for Android’s relationship with a device’s default gallery. Google’s broader backup guidance applies to backed-up content on supported signed-in devices, but the material does not establish identical repair steps for iOS or every third-party gallery. App labels can also move as Google updates Photos.
If the account, backup status, backed-up indicator, folder selection, and out-of-sync review all check out yet one gallery still shows an old file, the remaining discrepancy is likely inside that gallery’s local library rather than proof that Google Photos failed to save the edit. Preserve the confirmed cloud copy and use the gallery’s own refresh or library-management controls only after you know which version you want to keep.
Bottom line
Start with identity and evidence: confirm the same Google Account, read the backup status, and verify that the specific image is backed up. Then reconcile an Android default gallery with Review out-of-sync changes. Local-only files, unselected device folders, edits made in the phone maker’s gallery, and different accounts explain most cases where Google Photos edits do not appear on another device.
