The message usually remains in Spam & blocked. An explicit block, or the international-number filter on supported devices, can produce the same result.
On Android, open Google Messages > profile photo or icon > More options > Spam & blocked, select the conversation, and tap Unblock. Google says this removes the spam report and returns the conversation to the Home screen. If Google Messages offers Report not spam, use that option for a false positive.

What happened when a legitimate text was blocked?
Google Messages has several controls that can keep an incoming conversation out of the normal inbox. The result looks similar to a missing text, but the remedy depends on which control acted.

- Manual blocking can prevent a sender from appearing in the inbox. Reporting a conversation as spam also blocks the sender.
- Hide international messages, on supported devices, can move messages from international numbers that are not saved in your contacts to Spam & blocked.
These are different states, but the first recovery check is the same: look in Spam & blocked before assuming the carrier lost the message. Google does not publish an authoritative rate for false positives, so there is no reliable percentage showing how often legitimate texts are misclassified.

The location of the message is the most useful clue. A conversation in Spam & blocked points to a Messages setting or classification. A conversation in the regular inbox but with no new notification may indicate a notification or device issue that is separate from spam filtering. If the conversation is nowhere, investigate the number, default app, carrier, connection, storage, and messaging protocol.
How Google Messages decides that a message may be spam
Google says its spam protection can prevent suspected spam from being delivered and hide it in the spam folder. The documented signals include machine-learning models running on the device and checks of links in messages against malicious-link signals. A harmless message can therefore be caught because its wording, sender pattern, or URL resembles a known abuse pattern.
Spam protection is enabled automatically where the feature is available. If you prefer to review messages yourself, you can turn it off at Google Messages > profile photo or icon > Messages settings > Protection & safety > Spam protection. Turning the control off changes future filtering; it does not by itself restore a conversation that is already in Spam & blocked. Recover that conversation separately.
Turning protection off is a broad change, not a targeted exception for one trusted sender. It can reduce automatic filtering for later messages, so first try Report not spam or Unblock for the specific conversation. If you disable protection, continue checking suspicious links and unknown senders yourself.
Check which blocking case applies
| What you see | Likely cause | Correct action |
|---|---|---|
| The conversation is under Spam & blocked and shows a spam warning | Spam protection classified it as suspected spam | Choose Report not spam if offered, or select the conversation and tap Unblock |
| The sender is in your blocked list | The sender was blocked manually, or a spam report blocked it | Open the conversation in Spam & blocked and tap Unblock |
| An unsaved foreign-number conversation is in Spam & blocked | Hide international messages filtered it on a supported device | Select it and tap Move to inbox |
| The message is not in Spam & blocked or the inbox | It may be a number-format, app, carrier, signal, storage, SMS/MMS/RCS, or iMessage-transition problem | Follow the troubleshooting checks below |
The sender type matters. An ordinary contact, a business sender, a short code, and an international number can trigger different checks. The transport matters too: SMS, MMS, and RCS do not use exactly the same delivery path. Finally, note whether the problem affects one sender or everyone. One missing contact is more consistent with a block, number-format issue, or sender-specific filter; failures from every sender point more toward the app, account, carrier, signal, or device.
Unblock a legitimate text on Android
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile photo or icon in the top-right corner.
- Tap More options, then choose Spam & blocked.
- Select the legitimate contact or conversation.
- Tap Unblock.
Google says that unblocking removes the spam report and moves the conversation back to the Home screen. The sender can then appear with your other conversations instead of remaining in the blocked folder. This is the direct fix when you recognize the sender and the message was blocked or reported accidentally.
Use “Report not spam” when Google shows it
A suspected-spam warning may include Report not spam. Tap it when you recognize the sender and the message is legitimate. Google documents this action as removing the spam flag and providing feedback to its classification system. If the message is already displayed in the blocked folder without that button, use Unblock.

Report not spam and Unblock address closely related but not identical situations. The former tells Messages that its classification was wrong; the latter removes the block and spam report from the conversation. Either can return a recoverable conversation to Home, but use the label that your screen provides.
What unblocking does not fix
Unblocking changes Google Messages’ handling of the sender. It cannot restore a text that the carrier never delivered, correct a wrong country code, provide a missing network connection, or make an unsupported short code work. If new messages still do not arrive after the conversation returns to Home, continue with the delivery checks later in this guide.
Recover messages filtered as international
On supported devices, Google Messages can have Hide international messages enabled. With that filter on, messages from international numbers that are not in your contacts are moved to Spam & blocked rather than shown in the inbox. This is documented as a device-side filter, so it can affect one phone even when the sender and carrier are operating normally.
- Open Google Messages and go to Spam & blocked.
- Select the international-number conversation.
- Tap Move to inbox.
Google says future messages in that conversation are then delivered to the inbox. Saving the sender in your contacts can also help you recognize the conversation, but the documented recovery action is Move to inbox. Do not use Unblock as a substitute when the screen specifically identifies the international-message filter; use the action shown for that conversation.
Unblock a conversation in Google Messages for web
The web interface has a separate recovery path:
- Open Google Messages for web and locate the conversation list.
- Open More options.
- Choose Spam & blocked.
- Select the contact.
- Choose Unblock, then click Done.
The web action corresponds to the Android action: it removes the block so the conversation can return to the normal message list. If you do not see the conversation on the web, check the Android app as well; the phone and web menus can present the same state through different layouts.
If the conversation is not in Spam & blocked
When no copy appears in the spam folder, work through these checks in order. Test with a new message after each relevant change so you can identify the actual cause. Ask for a short plain-text test first; pictures, group messages, and RCS messages can fail for different reasons.
1. Confirm the exact number and country code
Compare the sender’s number with the contact entry and with the number the sender used. A missing country code, an extra digit, or an old contact entry can make a message appear to come from a different sender. Correct the contact and ask the sender to send again using the complete number. This check is especially important when the sender is traveling, has recently changed numbers, or uses an international format.

2. Check every blocking list
Review Google Messages’ blocked area for the conversation and confirm that the sender was not blocked manually. Reporting a conversation as spam both blocks the sender and moves the conversation to Spam & blocked, so a previous accidental report can explain why only one person’s messages are missing. If the sender is blocked, remove that block before asking for another test.

Install the current update available for your device. Google’s troubleshooting guidance specifically lists updating Messages as a check for missing texts. Menu names can vary slightly by app version, but the spam folder remains under the profile menu and More options. After updating, reopen the app and repeat the spam-folder check.
4. Make Google Messages the default texting app
Android normally routes incoming SMS and MMS to the default messaging application. Confirm that Google Messages is selected as the default SMS app in your phone’s app settings. If another messaging app currently owns that role, incoming texts may be appearing there instead. This can make Google Messages look as if it blocked a message when another app actually received it.
5. Verify carrier support for the message type
Ask whether your mobile plan and carrier support the transport being used:
- SMS is the basic text service.
- MMS is used for many picture, group, and longer messages and may require mobile-data support.
- RCS uses the carrier or internet connection and depends on support on both sides.
A sender may be able to reach you by SMS but not RCS, or send a picture that fails as MMS while short text messages work. The carrier can confirm whether the account is provisioned for the relevant service. When you contact support, say which message types work, which fail, and whether the problem affects one sender or all senders.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute6. Check the plan, signal, and airplane mode
Confirm that the account has available credit or an active plan, the phone has cellular signal, and airplane mode is off. A weak or absent signal can prevent delivery even when Google Messages itself is working normally. If only one location causes the problem, repeat the test where signal is stronger and tell the carrier the locations and times involved.
7. Check available storage
Low device storage can interfere with receiving and storing new messages or attachments. Free space and retry the message, especially if ordinary text arrives but picture or group messages do not. Storage is a device condition, not a spam classification, so freeing space will not remove an existing block; it addresses a separate delivery failure.

8. Account for an iPhone switch
If you recently moved the number from an iPhone to Android, deactivate iMessage for that number. Messages sent as iMessage can otherwise continue to route toward Apple’s service instead of arriving as ordinary texts on the Android phone. Tell frequent contacts to start a new conversation after the number is deregistered and test SMS delivery.
9. Recheck RCS after changing messaging apps
If you changed messaging applications, Google’s troubleshooting instructions may call for turning off RCS chats. RCS registration can remain associated with a previous app or device, so a sender’s RCS message may fail while SMS still works. Follow Google’s current on-screen RCS instructions for your device before testing again. Do not assume that an RCS failure proves spam filtering; compare it with a plain SMS test.
Special case: short codes
Short codes are abbreviated numbers used by services for alerts, verification, and other automated messages. Google lists additional failure causes for them:
- The short code may be outbound-only, meaning it can send but cannot receive replies.
- Premium SMS permission may be blocked on the phone.
- An alphanumeric short code may not be a destination that Google Messages can send to.
If a normal contact can text you but a service code cannot, ask the service whether the code accepts incoming messages and check the phone’s Premium SMS permission rather than repeatedly changing spam settings. A verification service may also use a different sender type from an ordinary contact, so report those details to the carrier or service provider.
Understand the privacy trade-off before reporting spam
Reporting is optional. Google says a spam report can include the sender’s phone number and up to the 10 most recent incoming messages. A conversation reported as spam may send the sender’s number and the most recent text to the mobile carrier. The 10-message figure is a data-handling limit, not a statistic about how common false positives are.
If you only want to stop messages from a number and do not want to submit a report, use the blocking control without reporting. If a legitimate message was incorrectly flagged, Report not spam is the documented way to remove the spam classification and provide feedback, but you should use it only when you are comfortable with the reporting process. Read the confirmation prompt so you know whether you are blocking only or also submitting a report.

A practical decision path
- Search Spam & blocked. If the conversation is there, determine whether it is an ordinary blocked contact, a suspected-spam warning, or an international-number filter.
- Choose the matching recovery action. Use Unblock for a blocked or spam-reported conversation, Report not spam when that option is shown, and Move to inbox for an international message filtered by that setting.
- Send a new test message. Ask the sender to send a short plain-text message first, then test a picture, group message, or RCS message separately if those are the items that failed.
- If the folder is empty, troubleshoot delivery. Check the number and country code, blocked lists, app updates, default SMS app, carrier support, plan, signal, airplane mode, storage, iMessage deactivation, and RCS state.
- Escalate a persistent one-sender failure. Give the carrier the sender type and message type, and state whether other contacts can reach you. That distinguishes a carrier or account issue from a Google Messages filter.
Keep the test controlled: change one setting at a time, note whether the message was SMS, MMS, or RCS, and record whether it appeared in Spam & blocked, the inbox, another app, or nowhere. This avoids repeatedly changing spam controls when the real issue is carrier provisioning or an old iMessage registration.

What to remember
- A legitimate text is most often recoverable from Spam & blocked; it has not necessarily been deleted.
- On Android, the recovery path is Profile > More options > Spam & blocked, followed by Unblock.
- Report not spam removes the spam flag when Google offers it.
- International messages from numbers not saved in contacts may require Move to inbox.
- If no conversation exists in the spam folder, investigate number formatting, app ownership, carrier support, connectivity, storage, and SMS/MMS/RCS or iMessage status.
- Reporting can share the sender’s number and recent messages with Google and potentially the carrier; blocking without reporting is available.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Google Messages block a text from someone I know?
Spam protection may have classified the conversation as suspected spam using on-device machine-learning signals or a link check. The sender may also have been blocked manually, or an international-number filter may have moved the message out of the inbox.
How do I find a legitimate text in Spam & blocked?
Open Google Messages, tap your profile photo or icon, choose More options, then Spam & blocked. Select the conversation and use Unblock, or choose Report not spam if that option appears.
What is the difference between Unblock, Report not spam, and Move to inbox?
Unblock removes a block and the spam report and returns the conversation to Home. Report not spam removes a suspected-spam classification and provides feedback to Google. Move to inbox is the documented action for an international-number conversation filtered by Hide international messages.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Could Google Messages be hiding international texts?
Yes. On supported devices, Hide international messages moves messages from international numbers that are not in your contacts to Spam & blocked. Select that conversation and tap Move to inbox; future messages in that conversation should go to the inbox.
What if the conversation is not in Spam & blocked?
Check the exact number and country code, blocked lists, Google Messages updates, the default SMS app, carrier support for SMS/MMS/RCS, plan credit, signal, airplane mode, storage, iMessage deactivation after an iPhone switch, and RCS registration after changing apps.
Why can one person not text me while everyone else can?
A sender-specific block, spam report, wrong number format, international filter, or sender-side transport issue is more likely than a device-wide outage. Compare the sender’s number and message type with a plain SMS from another contact, then inspect Spam & blocked.
Why do short-code texts fail when normal texts work?
Google lists an outbound-only short code, blocked Premium SMS permission, and an alphanumeric short code that Messages cannot send to as possible causes. Ask the service whether the code accepts incoming messages and check Premium SMS permission.
Recommended Free Tools
Does reporting spam share my messages?
Google says a spam report can include the sender’s phone number and up to the 10 most recent incoming messages, and the sender’s number and most recent text may be sent to the mobile carrier. Reporting is optional; you can block without reporting.
Will turning off spam protection restore an old missing text?
No. Turning off Spam protection changes future filtering. A conversation already in Spam & blocked must be recovered separately with Unblock or Report not spam, or with Move to inbox when the international filter applies.
The Bottom Line
Start with Google Messages > profile photo or icon > More options > Spam & blocked. Use Unblock or Report not spam for a false positive, and Move to inbox for a filtered international conversation. If nothing is there, troubleshoot the number, default app, carrier, signal, storage, and SMS/MMS/RCS or iMessage status before assuming the text was deleted.
