What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The usual reason Google Maps Timeline is missing is that Timeline is disabled, you are signed into a different Google Account, or the history is stored on another phone or in an encrypted backup. A phone’s general Location switch alone does not prove Timeline is enabled. On Android, use Google Maps 11.106 or later; on iPhone or iPad, use version 6.93 or later. Then check Timeline’s own setting, confirm the account and device, and import a backup before deleting the app or resetting the phone.
Use the symptom-led steps below. They separate an unavailable Timeline option, a Timeline that opens but is stale, and history that disappeared after changing devices.

First, identify which Timeline problem you have
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| There is no “Your Timeline” option | Timeline is off, the Maps app is too old, you are in the wrong account, or the device is unsupported. | Update Maps, verify the account, and open Timeline’s location and privacy settings. |
| Timeline opens but has no recent visits | Device Location or Timeline is off, location permission is restricted, or the app is not collecting data on that device. | Check both switches and the operating-system location permission. |
| Old history is missing after getting a new phone | Timeline data is associated with the original signed-in device and has not yet been imported from backup. | Open “Your backups” and import the source phone’s encrypted backup. |
| An import says the backup is locked | The backup was encrypted on another device and needs that device’s backup password. | Use the original phone to unlock it, if available; do not erase backups casually. |
| Only certain places or older dates are absent | Google may have automatically removed especially personal places, or an auto-delete period may have expired. | Review Timeline retention and privacy settings before treating the gap as a technical failure. |
Timeline is a device-based feature. Google says it saves visits and routes on eligible devices where you are signed in and have opted in. A history visible on one phone is therefore not proof that the same copy exists on another phone.

That distinction matters when a phone has been replaced, repaired, reset, or used by more than one account. An empty view on the replacement device can be normal until its backup is imported; it does not necessarily mean Google deleted the account’s entire history.

What Google Maps Timeline stores—and what it does not
Timeline records places you visited and routes you took when the feature is enabled. It is separate from Location Sharing, Web & App Activity, Search history and other Google Account controls. Turning one of those services on or off does not automatically turn Timeline on or restore a deleted Timeline copy. Google’s privacy documentation states: “Timeline is off by default for your Google Account and can only be turned on if you opt in.” Read the explanation in Google’s Timeline privacy documentation.
Because the feature is opt-in and tied to eligible signed-in devices, three checks come before any repair: the Google Account, the phone on which the data was collected, and whether a backup exists. This also explains why reinstalling Maps or signing into the same account on a replacement phone may show an empty Timeline.
Timeline is not the same as a live location feed. Location Sharing shows where a person is sharing from now, while Timeline is a record of visits and routes. Search history can contain a query or map interaction without proving that a Timeline visit was recorded. Checking the wrong service can make a working Timeline look broken.
Check the account, app version and device
- Confirm the Google Account. In Google Maps, tap your profile picture or initial and verify that it is the account used when the missing trips were recorded. If you use several accounts, switch to each plausible account and open “Your Timeline.”
- Check the Maps version. Google’s Android instructions list Maps 11.106 and later. Its iPhone and iPad instructions list version 6.93 or later. Install the current update from your device’s app store if your version is older or if “Your Timeline” is absent.
- Check device eligibility. Timeline is not available on Android Go devices. On other phones and tablets, the exact labels can vary by operating-system version, account type and staged settings rollout.
- Open Timeline on the intended phone. A device that has never collected Timeline data may legitimately show no history even when another phone still contains years of trips.
Use Google’s platform-specific instructions for the current menu labels: Android and iPhone and iPad.
If a work, school, or family-managed account is involved, an administrator or account policy can change which controls appear. Do not assume a missing button has the same cause as a missing date. Record which account is selected, which device originally collected the trip, and whether the old device is still accessible.
Fix a missing or stale Timeline on Android
Turn on both Location and Timeline
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Your Timeline.
- Tap More, then Location & privacy settings.
- Check that Location is on and Timeline is on. Enable either switch that is off.
These are separate controls. Android’s device Location switch can be enabled while Timeline remains opted out. Conversely, Timeline cannot collect routes when the operating system denies location access. Also review Android’s app-level location permission for Google Maps and any system setting that limits background location; the wording differs across manufacturers and Android releases.
When Android offers a choice between approximate and precise location, use the setting appropriate for the level of route detail you expect. Battery-saving or background restrictions may also change how often an app can obtain location. The menus differ by manufacturer, so use the permission and battery controls actually shown on the phone rather than following a path from a different Android skin.

After enabling both switches, take a short, ordinary trip and check Timeline later rather than judging it immediately. A missing single visit is not conclusive: location estimates can be incomplete indoors, in dense buildings or where the phone has little signal. If no recent activity appears at all, return to the account, permission and backup checks instead of repeatedly clearing app data.

Test with the same account and the same phone that has the switches enabled. A trip made on one phone will not necessarily appear instantly on another phone that has no imported copy. Testing across devices can therefore create a false impression that the setting did not work.
Fix a missing or stale Timeline on iPhone or iPad
Use the iOS Timeline controls
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Your Timeline.
- Review the Timeline and location settings shown in the current app.
- In iOS Settings, confirm that Google Maps is allowed to use location at the level needed for recording trips. The exact choices depend on your iOS version.
Google maintains a separate iPhone and iPad help page because menus and backup handling differ from Android. Follow the labels displayed in your installed version rather than a screenshot from an older release. If Timeline is not listed, update Maps to at least 6.93, confirm the account, and check whether the device is managed by an organisation that restricts location access.
Do not infer that an iPhone’s system Location Services switch alone enables Timeline. The Maps permission and Timeline opt-in still need to be reviewed. If iOS offers a choice about allowing location while the app is in use or in the background, select the option that permits the recording behavior you want, subject to your privacy preference.
Restore Timeline after changing phones
When a new phone is empty but the old phone contained years of history, look for an encrypted Timeline backup before attempting any destructive fix. Google describes the backup as a copy stored on its servers that can be imported to another device. It is not automatically merged simply because both phones use the same email address.
Import an available backup
- Open Google Maps on the phone you want to restore.
- Open Your Timeline and select the cloud or backup control.
- Under Your backups, select the backup for the original device.
- Tap More, choose Import, and confirm.
- Leave the app and account in place while the import completes. Google warns that changes may take a few days to appear in a backup, so do not assume failure immediately.
The source-device name and available controls can differ by platform and rollout. If no backup is listed, verify that you are using the original account and that the old phone actually had Timeline backups enabled. Google’s Android and iOS help pages document the current import flow and limitations.
Import is a recovery operation, not a guarantee that every historical entry will return. It depends on a backup having been created, remaining available, and being accessible with its encryption credentials. If only part of the expected history appears, compare the date range and source device shown in the backup screen before repeating the operation.
Unlock an encrypted backup
An import can report that encrypted data is locked. Google directs you to the device that originally encrypted the backups. On that phone, open the Timeline backup screen and enter the backup password when prompted, then retry the import on the replacement phone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep the old phone charged and connected while you inspect its backup settings. Do not factory-reset it merely because the new phone is ready. The original device may be the only documented route to unlock the encrypted copy.

If the original device is unavailable, Google documents a fallback in which you turn off Timeline backups and delete the existing backups. This permanently deletes those encrypted copies; it is not a repair step to try casually. Do it only after deciding that the backups cannot be unlocked and that their loss is acceptable.
Protect data before clearing anything
Do not start by clearing Google Maps storage, clearing Google Play services data, deleting Maps, or factory-resetting a phone. Google warns that these actions can remove the Timeline copy held on that device. Editing or deleting data on one device also does not necessarily change copies on other devices, so first determine where the surviving copy resides.
On Android, Google specifically warns that a factory reset or clearing Google Play services data deletes Timeline data from that device. On iPhone and iPad, deleting Google Maps or factory-resetting can remove the device’s Timeline copy. These are not harmless cache-clearing steps when the local history has not been backed up.
Export a copy before risky troubleshooting
- Android: open device Settings → Location → Location services → Timeline, then choose Export Timeline data.
- iPhone or iPad: in Google Maps open Settings → Personal content → Export Timeline data, then save the resulting
location-history.jsonthrough the iOS share sheet.
Export is a safeguard, not a promise that an export can recreate every in-app Timeline state. Keep the file somewhere secure because it contains detailed location history. Check for an available Timeline backup before deleting the app or resetting the device.
Do not confuse this in-app export with a promise that another Google data-download route can restore the live Timeline database. The documented recovery path is the Timeline backup and import control. Preserve both the export file and any available encrypted backup instead of deleting one in an attempt to fix the other.
When missing visits are expected privacy or retention behavior
Especially personal places
Google says visits to places it designates as particularly personal are automatically deleted for all Timeline users. A gap involving one sensitive destination therefore does not by itself indicate a malfunction.
Auto-delete windows
Google’s Android Timeline instructions describe automatic deletion choices of 3, 18 or 36 months. If a date falls outside the selected rolling window, it may no longer be available. Check the current Timeline retention control before attempting recovery; changing the setting cannot restore entries that have already been deleted.

Auto-delete is a rolling rule, not a one-time cleanup that preserves every older date elsewhere. If only older months are absent while recent visits continue, inspect the selected interval before changing permissions or reinstalling Maps.

Account settings that look similar
Google is gradually rolling out changes to Search services settings, so labels can differ between accounts. Some controls may still appear under Web & App Activity. These settings are distinct from Timeline. Do not infer that a change in Search history, Location Sharing or Web & App Activity has enabled, disabled or restored Timeline.
Other activity can persist even when Timeline is off or deleted, and that persistence is not evidence that Timeline should contain the same entries. Diagnose each service separately.
Why Timeline can remain stale after the switches are on
- Wrong account or device: the app may be showing a valid but different Timeline copy.
- Permission restriction: the operating system may allow Maps only while it is open, preventing background collection.
- Outdated app: older Maps builds may lack the current Timeline controls or backup workflow.
- Backup delay: Google says changes can take a few days to appear in a backup.
- Retention or privacy deletion: auto-delete or specially personal-place rules can remove dates without a software fault.
- Device limitations: Android Go does not support Timeline.
These possibilities cannot be resolved from the symptom alone. The relevant facts are the operating-system version, Maps version, signed-in account, original and replacement devices, backup status and any exact error message.

- Verify the signed-in Google Account and open Timeline on the phone that originally collected the data.
- Update Maps to Android 11.106 or later, or iOS/iPadOS Maps 6.93 or later.
- Confirm both device Location and Timeline are enabled, then review Google Maps’ location permission.
- If the problem followed a phone change, check Your backups and import the original device’s backup.
- If encryption blocks import, unlock it on the original phone rather than deleting the backup.
- Export Timeline data before clearing storage, deleting Maps, clearing Google Play services data or factory-resetting.
- Review auto-delete and privacy-related deletions for gaps that are limited to certain places or dates.
Work through the list in order. Updating the app or checking the account is reversible; deleting local data is not. Take screenshots of the backup list and error message before changing settings so you can tell whether the source device or backup disappears later.
If these steps do not resolve the problem, record the phone model, operating-system version, Google Maps version, account and device history, exact error text, and whether the old phone or an encrypted backup is still available. Those details are necessary to distinguish an account, permission, device-copy or backup problem.
Platform and rollout qualifications
The Android and iOS requirements and procedures above come from Google Help pages checked on October 13, 2026. Menus can differ by region, managed-account policy, operating-system release and gradual account rollout. A label that is missing from one account may appear under a differently named privacy or activity section on another. Use the controls shown in your current Maps build and avoid assuming that every screenshot or instruction applies identically to every phone.
Google’s Search service settings are also rolling out gradually. When a help page and your screen use different wording, look for the corresponding Timeline, privacy, backup or location control rather than changing an unrelated activity setting. If the old phone, account and backup are all unavailable, Google’s documented steps do not promise recovery of the missing history.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will signing into the same Google Account on a new phone restore all Timeline history automatically?
No. Timeline data is associated with eligible signed-in devices. If the old history is not already on the new phone, use the Timeline backup control and import the source device’s encrypted backup.
Why is Timeline missing even though my phone’s Location setting is on?
Timeline has its own opt-in switch. Check Your Timeline’s Location and privacy settings and confirm that Timeline itself is on, then review Google Maps’ app-level location permission.
How long should a Timeline backup import take?
Google warns that changes may take a few days to appear in a backup. Keep the correct account and source backup selected and do not delete data while waiting.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCan I recover a locked Timeline backup without the old phone?
Google’s documented unlock route uses the device that originally encrypted the backup. If that device is unavailable, the stated fallback deletes existing backups permanently, so do not choose it unless you accept losing those copies.
Does Google Takeout restore an in-app Timeline backup?
The documented Timeline workflow uses the in-app export and import controls described above. The available documentation does not establish Google Takeout as an equivalent restoration method.
Can clearing Google Play services data fix Timeline?
It can remove the Timeline copy held on an Android device. Check for a backup and export data first; clearing services data is not a routine first troubleshooting step.
Why are only some places or old dates missing?
Google automatically deletes visits to places it designates particularly personal, and Timeline can use rolling auto-delete choices of 3, 18 or 36 months. Review those settings before assuming a technical failure.
What information should I collect before asking for more help?
Note the operating-system and Google Maps versions, signed-in account, original and replacement devices, exact error text, backup status, and whether the old phone is still available. Those details separate an account, permission, device-copy and backup problem.
The Bottom Line
Start with the account, Maps version, device eligibility, and both Location and Timeline switches. If the problem began after a phone change, import the original device’s encrypted backup before deleting anything. Export the surviving copy and treat auto-delete or privacy-related gaps differently from a true collection failure.
