Google says its new agreement with Constellation Energy is intended to add 890 megawatts of nuclear capacity to the PJM grid by the end of 2032. The plan funds upgrades at operating plants, with Google serving as an anchor customer under a long-term power agreement; it also includes deploying Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise to help optimize plant operations. These are announced plans and forecasts, not delivered results.
What Google announced
In an announcement dated October 6, 2026, Google described an energy collaboration with Constellation Energy covering physical and digital upgrades at six operating plants in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Google says the work will involve uprates at 11 reactors and is expected to add 890 MW before the end of 2032. The added capacity is intended for the PJM grid, which Google describes as spanning 13 states and serving 67 million Americans. Google’s announcement does not give a plant-by-plant output breakdown or schedule.

Google also says the work is expected to sustain roughly 4,400 existing jobs and support approximately 7,200 construction jobs. Those employment figures, like the capacity forecast, are Google’s estimates.

Why Google says it is backing the upgrades
The company’s central rationale is that a long-term power agreement gives Constellation more predictable revenue for investing in upgrades. Google says it will act as an anchor customer, helping provide that revenue certainty. In Google’s framing, this arrangement supports additional nuclear generation without having to build an entirely new reactor.

Google describes the projected output as firm, 24/7 clean power and argues that using existing plant infrastructure can be quicker than building a new plant. The announcement does not provide comparative construction schedules or cost analyses to establish how much faster or cheaper this approach would be. Nor does it publish the agreement’s financial terms.
What a nuclear uprate means
An uprate is an effort to increase a reactor’s generating capacity by modernizing equipment at an existing plant. Google’s explanation names turbines, steam generators, and digital control systems as examples of equipment that may be upgraded. The aim is to produce more electricity from a plant that is already operating, rather than to construct a new reactor.

An uprate is different from restarting a shut plant, and both differ from building an advanced reactor. Google’s announcement does not detail the engineering limits, licensing steps, specific equipment work, or individual schedules for the 11 reactors.

Google says the long-term agreement provides the revenue certainty needed to support the upgrades and that other grid customers will not bear the related costs. That is the company’s account of the arrangement. The announcement does not provide enough financial detail or independent evidence to verify how costs are allocated or to assess the claim about other customers’ bills.

How the Constellation plan fits Google’s broader nuclear portfolio
Google also points to a U.S. Department of Energy goal of enabling 5 GW of domestic nuclear expansion by 2030 through uprates and restarts of existing plants. Google estimates that its agreements to revitalize existing infrastructure will enable nearly 25% of that goal by the end of the decade. Both the characterization of the federal goal and the projected contribution are presented in Google’s announcement.

- Google says its collaboration with NextEra Energy on restarting Iowa’s Duane Arnold Energy Center could bring more than 600 MW online. A restart is not an uprate at an operating plant.
- Google also names a Kairos Power–Tennessee Valley Authority partnership involving advanced reactors. That is a separate category from upgrading existing operating reactors.
These are project statements and expected outcomes reported by Google, not independently verified results. They should not be added together as if they were all capacity from the Constellation uprates.
What is known—and what remains uncertain
The announcement establishes what Google says it plans to finance and procure, and how it describes its rationale. It does not establish that the projected capacity, employment, ratepayer benefits, or cost allocation will materialize. Detailed financial terms, unit-level output forecasts, project schedules, underlying cost assumptions, and independent validation are not included in the announcement.

For now, the clearest explanation for Google’s backing is the company’s stated commercial logic: a long-term customer commitment can make investment in existing nuclear plants more predictable, while equipment upgrades are intended to increase output from infrastructure already in operation. Whether the projects deliver the promised capacity on schedule, and how their costs ultimately affect other customers, remain open questions.
