There are two separate reasons: Google can assemble your supplied assets in combinations you did not preview, and—when you opt in to the current text customization feature through AI Max for Search—it can add extra, Google-generated headlines and descriptions.
Your original copy is not automatically erased. Google describes advertiser-written and customized assets as one eligible pool, selecting combinations according to relevance and predicted performance. Understanding which behavior you are seeing determines whether you should change your copy, adjust pinning, or inspect the generated-asset reports.

The two kinds of text in an RSA
The labels in the Google Ads editor refer to where an asset came from. “Headlines” and “descriptions” are the text you supplied while creating the responsive search ad. Google customized text assets are additional headline and description options generated by Google when text customization is enabled. Google says the Search feature is now called text customization; its former name was “automatically created assets.” See Google Ads Help’s explanation of text customization.

| Question | Advertiser-entered RSA assets | Google-customized text assets |
|---|---|---|
| Who creates the wording? | You write and submit the headlines and descriptions in the RSA editor. | Google generates additional options from campaign context after you opt in. |
| What information is used? | Your chosen copy, subject to Google Ads editorial policies and character limits. | Google says it uses the domain, landing page, existing ads and ad-group keywords, using extraction and generative AI. |
| How is it enabled? | They are the normal assets you add to an RSA. | Text customization is a campaign-level Search setting available through AI Max for Search and requires advertiser opt-in. |
| How does it serve? | It enters the RSA’s eligible pool and can be combined or placed differently from one impression to another. | It can be combined with your assets when eligible and when Google predicts the combination will perform better. |
| Does it count toward RSA limits? | The RSA limits apply: up to 15 headlines and four descriptions. | Google’s FAQ says customized assets do not count toward those headline and description limits. |
| Where can you identify it? | Review the assets you created in the ad editor and asset report. | The ad-level asset report identifies Google-customized assets; the combination report shows combinations that actually served. |
The distinction matters because a different-looking ad is not, by itself, evidence that Google rewrote one of your submitted lines. It may simply be a different RSA combination.

How text customization generates additional copy
Google uses campaign and landing-page context
Google says text customization draws on your advertising domain, landing page, existing ads and the keywords in the ad group. It describes two broad techniques: “light-touch” extraction, such as using a landing page’s title, description or metadata, and generative AI grounded in the landing-page content. This is Google’s description of its process, not a guarantee that every generated line is accurate or suitable for your business.
Because the landing page is one of the inputs, changes to a page can affect future suggestions. Keep important claims, prices, product names, availability statements and calls to action current on the page that the ad sends people to. Google advises advertisers to maintain accurate landing-page content and monitor customized text in the reporting tools.
It is an opt-in campaign setting
Text customization is not a universal rewrite applied to every Search campaign. Google documents it as a campaign-level option within AI Max for Search, and says advertisers must opt in. The reviewed help pages do not define every account, campaign-subtype or market eligibility boundary, so availability can differ by account or geography. If the setting is absent, do not assume that an ad variation came from generated text; RSA assembly alone can explain many differences.

Generated assets are additions, not replacements
Google says your submitted headlines and descriptions continue to serve in combination with customized assets. It also says generated assets are periodically refreshed, reviewed and refreshed as needed at least every 48 hours, and serve only when its systems predict they will perform better than the uploaded headlines and description lines. Those are vendor-stated operating rules, not an independent performance or accuracy guarantee for a particular campaign.

Why the ad can differ even when text customization is off
Responsive search ads assemble combinations
An RSA is not a fixed sentence. You provide multiple headline and description candidates, and Google’s system assembles combinations for different queries and available ad space. Google’s RSA documentation allows up to 15 headlines and four descriptions, with a maximum of 30 characters per headline and 90 characters per description. Not every submitted asset is guaranteed to appear in every impression.

A missing headline in one impression does not prove it was removed, rewritten or replaced.

Placement can change when assets are unpinned
By default, headlines and descriptions can move among eligible positions. Google says the first headline and first description usually appear, while other fields can appear based on predicted performance or available space. Pinning an asset constrains it to a selected position, but pinning also reduces the flexibility of the RSA system. Treat pinning as a control for requirements—such as a legal qualification or a mandatory brand phrase—not as a way to force every line into every impression.
Google explains these combination and placement behaviors in About responsive search ads. They are separate from text customization: the same variation in visible wording can occur in a campaign that has never enabled generated assets.
What the published limits mean
The limits apply to the advertiser-created RSA fields. Google lists up to 15 headlines and four descriptions per responsive search ad, with 30-character headline and 90-character description limits. Customized assets are extra options and, according to Google’s text-customization FAQ, do not consume those slots.

|---|---|---|
| Advertiser headlines | Up to 15; 30 characters each | You can supply a broad set of messages for the RSA system to test and combine. |
| Advertiser descriptions | Up to four; 90 characters each | Longer lines can provide details, but the system may omit a line in a particular impression. |
| Customized assets | Not counted toward those RSA limits | Generated options expand the eligible pool without giving you additional editor fields. |
These are platform specifications published by Google, not a promise that an ad will use the maximum number of assets or that adding more copy will improve results.

How to find the wording that actually served
Use reporting rather than relying on the live-search preview. Google identifies two reports for this purpose: the ad-level asset report and the combination report. The first helps you distinguish advertiser-created assets from Google-customized text assets; the second shows combinations that were served.
- Open the relevant Search campaign and ad. Work at the ad level so the report is tied to the specific RSA rather than to a general campaign summary.
- Review the asset report. Look for the label identifying Google-customized text assets and compare each line with your submitted headlines and descriptions.
- Open the combination report. Check which headline and description combinations were actually delivered, including combinations that differ from the order shown in the editor.
- Compare the date range and campaign setting. Confirm that text customization was enabled during the period you are investigating; otherwise, RSA assembly and placement are the likely explanation.
- Record any problematic line. Save the exact wording and the report date before changing the landing page or campaign settings, so you can determine whether the line was generated, merely repositioned, or no longer serving.
Google documents these reporting capabilities in its text customization frequently asked questions. Reporting is more reliable than searching for your own ad, because personalization, auction eligibility and available space can prevent you from seeing the same combination as another user.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when generated text is inaccurate
Check the source page first
Compare the generated claim with the landing page and the current offer. If the page contains obsolete prices, discontinued products, old dates or ambiguous wording, correct the page so the campaign context is accurate. Google says its generation is grounded in that content, but grounding does not make the output an approval of your claims or a substitute for review.

Review the asset report regularly
Set a recurring review appropriate to your campaign’s risk and update cycle. Inspect new customized assets, their status and the combinations in which they appear. Pay particular attention to regulated claims, guarantees, comparative language, geographic availability and terms that require legal qualification.
Best Value
Use your supplied assets for non-negotiable language
Write required disclosures and essential positioning into your own RSA assets, then use pinning only where a phrase must occupy a particular position. Since pinning limits flexibility, reserve it for genuine constraints rather than trying to lock an entire ad into one sentence.
Turn off the feature when the additional pool is unsuitable
If your review shows that generated wording cannot meet your accuracy, compliance or brand requirements, revisit the campaign’s AI Max and text-customization settings and disable the option if it is available in your account. The exact controls and eligibility can vary, so verify the current setting in the campaign interface and confirm afterward in the asset report.
How to interpret Ad Strength without overreading it
Google’s Ad Strength indicator provides feedback on the quality and variety of RSA assets. Google says Ad Strength does not determine whether an ad is eligible to serve and does not calculate Ad Rank, Quality Score or auction wins. Therefore, an Ad Strength increase after adding or enabling assets is not proof that generated text caused more conversions, lower costs or better auction outcomes. Use conversion, relevance and compliance data from your own account to evaluate business impact.
When comparing periods, keep the explanation precise: a change in results may coincide with new combinations, audience or query mix, bids, budget, landing-page changes or other campaign settings. The available documentation does not establish an independent performance lift for text customization.
Quick Recap
A practical diagnosis for “Google changed my headline”
- You see a different order or a missing line: Check RSA combinations and placement first. Unpinned assets can move or be omitted because of predicted performance or available space.
- You see wording that you never entered: Check whether text customization was enabled through AI Max for Search, then confirm the line in the ad-level asset report.
- The unfamiliar line resembles your landing page: That is consistent with Google’s described extraction and generative-AI inputs, but verify the exact asset and its serving history in the reports.
- You cannot find the setting: Do not infer that the feature is active. Google’s documentation does not specify every eligibility boundary, and ordinary RSA assembly may explain the variation.
- A line is factually wrong: Correct the landing-page source, document the asset, review the account’s controls and monitor subsequent report entries.
Key points to keep straight
- Editor headlines and descriptions are advertiser-provided RSA assets.
- Google-customized text assets are additional options generated under the opt-in text-customization feature, formerly called automatically created assets.
- Generated assets supplement your copy; they do not mean your submitted assets disappeared.
- RSA combination and placement can change the visible ad even when no generated asset is involved.
- Customized assets do not count toward the 15-headline and four-description RSA limits.
- The asset report identifies generated text, and the combination report shows what served.
- Google’s descriptions of grounding, refresh timing and predicted performance are platform statements, not guarantees for your campaign.
