Gold eased on October 5, 2026, as the US dollar strengthened, but weaker US jobs data reduced expectations for an October Federal Reserve rate hike and helped limit the decline. The move was a dated market snapshot, not a description of gold’s direction in the days that followed.
What happened to gold on October 5?
Reuters reported spot gold down 0.3% at $4,131.61 per ounce by 0422 GMT on October 5, 2026. The US Dollar Index had risen 0.6% in that report. Those figures describe conditions at the reported time, not a daily closing price or a live quote. Reuters report republished by MarketScreener.

Why can a firmer dollar weigh on gold?
Gold is commonly priced in US dollars. When the dollar strengthens, buyers using other currencies generally need to spend more of their own currency to buy the same dollar-priced amount of gold. That can dampen demand and put downward pressure on the price. It is a market relationship, not a guarantee that gold must fall whenever the dollar rises.
Why did weaker jobs data limit the pressure?
Reuters said softer-than-expected US September job growth and downward revisions to payroll counts for the prior two months reduced expectations of an October Fed rate hike. That shift in rate expectations offered gold some support, cushioning the effect of dollar strength. Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade, said the softer labor data had “helped dial back October Fed hike expectations,” while the market still viewed the broader hiking cycle as intact. How do interest rates and Treasury yields affect gold?
Bullion does not pay interest. When Treasury yields rise, interest-bearing assets can become more attractive relative to gold, raising the opportunity cost of holding it. Real yields—the return after accounting for inflation—also matter to investors assessing that trade-off. Reuters’ October 6 report said 10- and 30-year Treasury yields had reached 24-year highs on Monday; that is Reuters’ characterization in the report, rather than an independently verified Treasury-series calculation here. What to watch when interpreting another gold move
- The dollar: Check whether it is strengthening or weakening, and by how much.
- Treasury yields: Consider both nominal yields and real yields; rising yields can increase gold’s opportunity cost.
- Rate expectations: Market pricing can shift with incoming data. Reuters cited CME FedWatch probabilities on October 7, 2026, of 21% for an October hike and almost 70% for a December hike. These were time-sensitive market estimates, not Fed decisions. Reuters report republished by MarketScreener.
- Safe-haven demand: Geopolitical concerns or stress in sovereign-bond markets can support gold even when the dollar or yields are a headwind. Reuters quoted analysts citing turmoil in French bonds and concerns about US Treasury markets as possible sources of demand; these are analyst explanations, not proof of a single cause.
