Then identify what is actually grouped: a conversation thread, an inbox tab or section, a label, or automated notifications. Gmail uses separate controls and rules for each, so turning off conversation view does not remove every kind of visual grouping.
What Conversation view controls
Conversation view determines whether replies with a shared subject are displayed as one conversation thread or as separate messages in the inbox. Google describes the choice this way: “With Gmail, you can choose whether messages are grouped in conversations, or if each email shows up in your inbox separately.” When conversation view is enabled, Gmail stacks related messages together; when it is disabled, ordinary messages should appear individually.

A thread normally shows the newest message at the bottom when you open it. That visual clue can help you recognize a conversation, but appearance alone is not proof that the setting is enabled. Inbox categories, labels, sections and automated-mail rules can make separate messages look organized together even when conversation view is off.

Google says a thread breaks off when the subject changes or when the conversation exceeds 100 emails. A very long exchange can therefore split into more than one thread, while messages with the same subject can still be shown together when the setting is on.

Turn Conversation view off in the interface you are using
The setting is account-specific and the navigation differs by platform. Use the path for the screen where you see the grouping, not merely the device on which you first changed the option.

Computer: the save step is required
On the web, open the gear-shaped Settings menu, choose See all settings, and locate Conversation View. Select Conversation view off and scroll to click Save Changes. Leaving the page without saving does not apply the selection. Gmail’s Quick settings sidebar also exposes an Email Threading control; it is another way to reach the same threading choice, but confirm that the final state is off.
Android: check the selected account
Open the Gmail app menu, tap Settings, choose the account in question, and under General clear Conversation view. Gmail can hold several accounts in one app. Changing the option for one account does not change it for the others, so the account name at the top of the settings screen matters.
iPhone and iPad: the control is under Inbox customizations
In the Gmail app, open Menu → Settings → Inbox → Inbox customizations, then turn Conversation view off. As on Android, make sure you are editing the account whose inbox shows the grouped messages.

First determine what “grouped” means
Before troubleshooting, open one apparent group and inspect its structure. A true conversation contains messages connected as a reply exchange, often sharing a subject and showing a stacked message history. Other Gmail layouts group messages by where they belong in the inbox rather than by their relationship to one another.
Conversation thread
If opening one row reveals several replies in a single message view, you are looking at a conversation. Recheck the platform-specific switch and, on the web, make sure Save Changes was selected. Remember that a thread can split after a subject change or after more than 100 emails, so a split thread does not indicate that conversation view is off.
Inbox tabs and categories
Gmail can divide the inbox into category tabs or other sections. Messages may appear under headings such as Primary, Social or Promotions, depending on the layout and account configuration. This is inbox organization, not conversation threading. Turning off conversation view does not remove those tabs or sections. If your goal is a single undivided list, adjust the inbox layout separately rather than changing the threading switch repeatedly.
Sections such as Important, Unread or Starred
Multiple-inbox layouts and sectioned inboxes can place messages under headings such as Important, Unread or Starred. The same message can be represented in a section because of its status or marker. Such headings remain possible with conversation view off because they are independent display choices.

Labels
Labels are another source of apparent grouping. They collect messages by a tag, but they are not conversation threads. Google documents a specific difference when conversation view is off: a label appears only on the individual message that received it. If a label seems to cover an entire exchange, inspect each message; the label may be attached to only one item, while the surrounding messages are simply nearby in the list.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
Follow these checks in order. Each one rules out a different explanation without assuming an undocumented Gmail failure.
- Identify the interface and account. Decide whether the display is Gmail on the web, the Android app, or the iPhone/iPad app. Confirm the exact Gmail account open at that moment. A setting changed in one account or client is not evidence that another account or client has the same state.
- Reopen the correct control. On a computer, use Settings → See all settings → Conversation View, select Conversation view off, and click Save Changes. In the apps, follow the Android or iPhone/iPad path above and verify the switch after returning to the inbox.
- Open one grouped-looking row. Look for a stack of replies in one conversation view. If there is no reply history and the rows are merely under a heading or tab, the display is an inbox section, category or label rather than conversation view.
- Check labels and markers separately. Select an individual message and inspect its labels, star and importance marker. These attributes can explain why messages are shown together in a section even though each message is separate.
- Consider whether the messages are automated notifications. System-generated mail follows a special grouping rule described below. This case is different from ordinary correspondence and is most relevant when one service sends repeated alerts to many recipients.
- Record the context if the display is demonstrably a thread. Note the platform, account, exact setting state and an example of the message pattern before contacting Google support. The official guidance does not establish a general synchronization delay, cache problem or universal bug that explains grouping after the setting is off.
Why automated notifications can still be grouped
Google documents a special case for automated email. Gmail may group notification messages sent by a system to a group of people when several identifying characteristics line up. The messages can share the specified sender, recipient or subject characteristics, include a reference header with matching IDs, and be sent within one week of a previous message.

If you administer the automated sender, Google’s guidance is to use a new subject for each message or a unique reference-header value when you need notifications to remain separate. Changing the subject or reference value changes the message relationship that Gmail uses for this special grouping behavior.

If you simply receive alerts from a service, you usually cannot alter those headers. You can still distinguish this case from a normal reply thread by checking whether the messages are machine-generated, arrive on a recurring schedule, and share the same notification identity. Do not assume that every repeated email is automatically grouped: the documented conditions are specific.

“I switched it off, but the old thread is still open.”
Changing the setting affects how Gmail presents messages in the inbox and message view; it does not rewrite the history of an exchange or remove messages. Close the open message, return to the inbox, and inspect newly displayed rows. If rows are still presented as one conversation, verify the account and save state again.
“The same subject means conversation view is ignoring my setting.”
A shared subject is only one signal used to identify related mail. With conversation view off, ordinary messages should be listed separately, but automated notifications have their own documented grouping conditions. A subject match by itself is not enough to diagnose either case.
“A label is grouping everything.”
A label is a classification, not a thread. With conversation view disabled, Gmail’s documented behavior is to show the label on the specific message that received it. Inspect the individual messages rather than treating the label heading as proof of a conversation.
“There must be a propagation delay or cache bug.”
Google’s reviewed help pages provide the setting paths and grouping rules but do not state that a general delay, cache issue or known bug causes messages to remain threaded after the switch is off. Treat those possibilities as unconfirmed. First complete the account, interface and display-type checks; if a genuine thread remains, provide those details when seeking support.
How to prevent grouping when you control the sender
For an automated system that you operate, design each notification so Gmail can distinguish it from the previous one. Use a new subject for each message when separate conversations are required, or assign a unique value in the reference header. Google’s documented timing condition is also relevant: messages sent within one week of a previous message are candidates for this special grouping when the other identifiers match.
These measures apply to developers and administrators who generate the mail. They do not change Gmail’s conversation-view preference for a recipient and should not be presented as a fix for ordinary person-to-person replies.

When to contact Google support
Contact support after you have confirmed all of the following:
- The affected account is the one whose settings you changed.
- You used the navigation for the correct interface.
- Conversation view is visibly off, and the desktop change was saved.
- The apparent group is a true conversation thread, not a tab, section, label or automated-notification pattern.
Include the platform, account context, the exact path used, whether the issue occurs on the web or in an app, and what appears when you open one grouped row. This information lets support distinguish a configuration question from an account-specific display problem without relying on an assumed delay or undocumented fix.
The short answer
Turning off conversation view separates ordinary replies, but it does not disable Gmail’s independent inbox organization or its documented grouping of some automated notifications. Recheck the switch in the affected account and interface, save it on the web, identify what is actually grouped, and treat system-generated mail according to its sender, recipient, subject, reference-header and timing conditions.
