Test all of those states—not just a successful coordinate—because nearby results, local information, maps, and other location-dependent features can otherwise fail or mislead users. Chrome DevTools can emulate coordinates and an unavailable location for focused page testing, but it does not establish that every real device or operating-system location setup works.
What geolocation testing checks
The browser Geolocation API provides a site with geographical location associated with the device, subject to permission and the availability of a position. Those conditions are part of the feature: a user can refuse the request, the browser or platform may be unable to provide a position, or a request may time out. The W3C Geolocation specification describes the API and its error behavior at https://www.w3.org/TR/geolocation/.
Testing should therefore answer two questions: does the page behave correctly when it receives a location, and does it remain clear and useful when it does not? A map that never loads, a nearby-search screen that implies false precision, or a flow that offers no alternative after permission is denied are all user-visible failures.
Why test more than the successful location
Location changes content and actions
A site may use location to show local weather, nearby search results, local availability, localized content, or a map. Chrome’s DevTools documentation uses local weather as an example of location-dependent UI and recommends checking behavior in different places: Chrome DevTools Sensors. A single location can conceal assumptions such as a result list that only works in one region or a location-derived action that does not refresh when coordinates change.

Permission and acquisition are part of the experience
A browser permission grant is not a guarantee that the operating system can supply location. The W3C specification notes that platforms may deny access to OS location services even after browser-level permission has been granted. The API also defines timeout and position-unavailable errors. Test those outcomes as well as an explicit user denial.
Location is sensitive information
The W3C specification requires express end-user permission and advises sites to request location only when needed, limit use and retention, protect the data, and explain collection and sharing. A sound test checks not only whether the feature works, but whether the request occurs at an appropriate point and whether the user has a useful path forward without sharing location.

Test location-dependent behavior in Chrome DevTools
- List the location-dependent UI. Identify the pages, actions, and displayed information that should change when coordinates change. Include what the user sees if no location is available.
- Open Sensors. Open Chrome DevTools, then select More tools > Sensors. Alternatively, open the Command Menu with Command+Shift+P on macOS or Control+Shift+P on Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS; type Sensors and select Show Sensors. The path and shortcuts are documented in Chrome DevTools Sensors.
- Choose a preset location. In the Sensors panel, use a preset and reload or revisit the relevant page. Check the displayed content and location-derived actions against the expected behavior.
- Try custom coordinates. Set latitude and longitude that are meaningful for the product, then check that the page responds to the changed position rather than retaining stale results.
- Test unavailable location. Select Location unavailable. Verify that the interface explains the issue or offers a reasonable alternative instead of showing a broken or misleading result.
- Test the permission choice separately. Exercise the browser prompt with both allow and deny outcomes. Check that success and error handling are appropriate; the W3C Geolocation API Test Suite lists manual allow and deny tests: W3C Geolocation API Test Suite.
- Check ongoing updates and time limits where applicable. If the page watches location continuously, verify that updates are handled and that watching stops when the feature no longer needs it. If it requests a current position, check timeout and unavailable outcomes.
- Validate the intended environment. Repeat on real devices or under relevant OS permission conditions if the product promises those behaviors. DevTools coordinate overrides test the page’s response to emulated location; Chrome’s documentation does not claim to reproduce every device, OS permission, or real-world location source.
Cover the important test states
| State | What to exercise | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Location supplied | Preset and relevant custom coordinates in DevTools | Location-dependent content and actions match the supplied position and update when it changes. |
| Permission allowed | Accept the browser’s location prompt | The success path uses the returned position as intended. |
| Permission denied | Reject the prompt | The page handles the error and offers an understandable fallback rather than treating permission as guaranteed. |
| Location unavailable | Choose Location unavailable in Sensors | The interface avoids broken, empty, or falsely certain results. |
| Timeout | Exercise a request whose position cannot be obtained before its timeout | The timeout path is handled; the W3C specification defines this error, but DevTools’ coordinate override alone is not evidence of real device acquisition behavior. |
| Continuous updates | For features using ongoing location updates, change the emulated coordinates and stop the watch | Updates are reflected while needed and no longer requested when the feature stops watching. |
The W3C test suite distinguishes permission allow and deny behavior, while the specification defines timeout and position-unavailable errors. These cases test different paths and should not be collapsed into one generic “location failed” check.
Check embedded pages and Permissions Policy
If the experience runs in an iframe, verify that the embedding page’s Permissions Policy permits geolocation. The W3C specification shows an iframe using allow="geolocation"; it also documents Permissions-Policy: geolocation=() as a way to disable the feature in a first-party context. See the W3C Geolocation specification for the policy examples and API details.

What DevTools emulation can—and cannot—tell you
DevTools presets and custom coordinates are fast, repeatable ways to test how a browser page responds to a chosen location. The unavailable-location state also helps check the page’s fallback. This is focused browser testing, not a complete reproduction of the user’s physical environment: it does not by itself prove that OS-level permission settings, a device’s location services, or a particular real-world location source will behave the same way.
Use a specification-oriented test suite when you need formalized API cases, and add real-device or OS-condition checks when those conditions are part of the behavior you promise. The W3C status page records that the Geolocation specification was published as a Recommendation on 1 September 2022 and returned to Candidate Recommendation in March 2026 to support more efficient iteration and continued feature additions: W3C Geolocation specification history.

Privacy checks belong in the test plan
- Request location only when the feature needs it, rather than as an unexplained first step.
- Make the purpose of the request and any collection or sharing understandable to users.
- Ensure that denying permission does not leave the page in a misleading or unusable state when a reasonable alternative is possible.
- Limit how location is used and retained, and protect it appropriately.
The W3C Geolocation API Test Suite reproduces the specification requirement that user agents must not send location information to websites without the user’s express permission, subject to the specification’s stated prearranged-trust exception: W3C Geolocation API Test Suite. Treat permission and data handling as product behavior to verify, not merely as setup for a successful demo.
