What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Gemini’s screen overlay is an Android assistant feature, not simply a floating version of the Gemini app. For it to appear, the device must support the Gemini mobile app, the Google app must be selected as the default digital assistant, and Gemini must be configured as the mobile assistant. If the overlay opens but cannot answer questions about the current page, that is a separate Screen context setting. Account, language, country, age, and supervision limits can also remove particular features even when the overlay itself works.
Use the symptom table first, then follow the matching checks. The steps below use Google’s documented Android paths; manufacturers may rename or relocate the same controls.

Identify which Gemini failure you have
“The overlay does not appear” can describe several different states. Diagnosing the state prevents you from changing screen-permission settings when the actual problem is assistant selection, or from changing the default assistant when the overlay already works but screen access is disabled.

| What you see | Most likely layer | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| No Gemini response after saying “Hey Google” or using the configured touch shortcut | Device eligibility, assistant selection, or mobile-assistant setup | Confirm the device requirements, then inspect Digital assistant app and Gemini’s setup |
| The full Gemini app opens, but an on-screen panel does not | Gemini is being opened as an app rather than as the device assistant | Make sure the Google app is the default assist app and that mobile-assistant setup is complete |
| The panel opens, but Gemini cannot use the page, text, or image underneath it | Screen-context controls | In Gemini settings, check Use text from screen and Use screenshot |
| The panel opens, but a particular command, “Hey Google,” or an Assistant-derived action is missing | Country, language, account, age, or supervision availability | Check feature and account limits rather than treating it as an overlay failure |
Google describes the intended behavior this way: when you say “Hey Google” or activate Gemini by touch, such as by long-pressing the power button, “an on-screen overlay will open rather than the full app.” This behavior applies to supported configurations, not every Android installation.

Run the test from a second app, not from Gemini’s own conversation view. That makes it clear whether the system assistant invocation is working. Note whether the device stays in the current app, switches to the full Gemini app, shows a panel briefly, or does nothing. Each result points to a different layer of troubleshooting.
Check whether the device and account are eligible
Start with eligibility before changing settings. Google’s availability guidance lists the following requirements and restrictions:
| Requirement or restriction | What it means for troubleshooting |
|---|---|
| Android 9 or later | An older Android release is outside the documented requirement for the Gemini mobile app. |
| At least 2 GB of RAM | A device below the documented memory requirement is not an eligible target for the mobile app. |
| Android phone or tablet | The instructions concern the Android mobile app, not the web experience or another operating system. |
| Android Go is not supported | An Android Go device can lack the mobile-app assistant behavior even if its Android version number appears recent. |
| Work or school account access to Gemini Apps | An organization-managed account may need Gemini Apps access enabled before the mobile assistant can provide the expected features. |
| Country, language, age, and supervised-account rules | Availability can vary by location, language, age, and whether the account is supervised. |
These requirements come from Google’s Gemini mobile app availability guidance. To check your own device, use Settings search for terms such as Android version and review the model’s specifications for RAM. If the device is Android Go, or otherwise falls outside the documented requirements, changing the assistant menu will not create a supported overlay.
Eligibility is also account-specific. A personal account may expose a capability that a work or school account does not, because an administrator controls access to Gemini Apps and some features powered by Google Assistant. A supervised account can have additional limits. If several accounts are signed in, identify which account Gemini is using before comparing behavior between devices or users.
Set the correct default digital assistant
The most common configuration issue is that Gemini is installed but the device is still using another default assist app. Google’s documented control is separate from the Gemini app itself.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Open Default apps.
- Choose Digital assistant app.
- Select the Google app if another app is selected.
That path is documented in Google’s Android setup instructions for the Gemini mobile app. Device makers sometimes use a different label or nesting. If you do not see the exact menu, search Settings for Digital assistant app or Device assistance app. The goal is the same: the Google app must be the system’s default assist provider for Gemini’s mobile-assistant behavior.
After selecting the Google app, open Gemini and complete any mobile-assistant setup prompts. Installation alone does not necessarily finish the assistant hand-off. Follow the in-app confirmation steps until Gemini is configured for assistant use, then test the activation method supported by your device, such as saying “Hey Google” or long-pressing the power button.

Do not confuse the default browser, voice-search provider, or launcher choice with the digital assistant app. Those are separate defaults. The relevant entry is the one used when the system assistant gesture or button is invoked. If the menu offers more than one Google-related choice, select the Google app entry identified by the digital-assistant setting, then repeat the invocation test.
Test the overlay independently of screen understanding
Perform a simple launch test before asking Gemini about a webpage. From another app, invoke Gemini by voice or the configured touch gesture. On a supported setup, a panel should appear over the current app instead of switching to the full Gemini app.
- No panel and no Gemini response: return to eligibility, default-assistant selection, and mobile-assistant setup.
- The full Gemini app opens: the app is launching, but the device is not handing the invocation to the assistant overlay; recheck the Digital assistant app selection and setup completion.
- A panel appears: the assistant launch path is working. Continue to the Screen context checks if the panel cannot use what is displayed underneath.
Do not use the result of a screen question as the first test. A failed screen question can be caused by content-access settings even when the overlay itself launched correctly.
Use the same activation method twice after each configuration change. For example, test a power-button press separately from “Hey Google.” If one works and the other does not, report that difference; it is more useful than saying the overlay is generally broken. Also record whether the panel appears only after unlocking the device or only inside particular apps, because those are distinct symptoms for support to evaluate.

Turn on Screen context when the overlay opens but cannot use the page
Screen context controls what Gemini may use from the active screen. They are independent of the setting that makes Gemini the device assistant.
- Open the Gemini app.
- Open Gemini’s settings.
- Find Screen context.
- Check Use text from screen if you want Gemini to process selectable or recognized text from the active screen.
- Check Use screenshot if Gemini needs an image of the current screen to interpret visual content.
The exact placement of the settings can vary with the app version and device, but the documented controls are named Use text from screen and Use screenshot. Enabling them addresses access to screen content; it does not repair an assistant that fails to launch.
These options solve different content problems. Text access is appropriate when you want Gemini to summarize words, explain a message, or answer from visible text. Screenshot access is needed when the useful information is visual, such as an image, chart, or layout. If a page contains both, enabling both controls gives Gemini the two documented forms of context. Turning them on does not guarantee that every app will expose a suggestion or that every piece of content can be interpreted.

Once the overlay is open over another app, Google may show a contextual action such as Ask about screen or Ask about page. Those suggestions are not guaranteed in every app. Their absence can reflect the app or the available context rather than a failed overlay. Try a direct question about the visible content after confirming the relevant Screen context option.
Account, language, and feature limits can look like an overlay problem
Gemini’s mobile assistant and Google Assistant-derived actions do not have identical availability everywhere. Google notes that capabilities can differ by country and language, and some features are unavailable for supervised accounts. Work or school accounts can also lack features powered by Google Assistant, even when a personal account on the same device behaves differently.
Use this diagnostic split:
- Overlay absent for every invocation: prioritize the device and assistant configuration checks.
- Overlay present, but “Hey Google” or a specific action is absent: verify the account type, language, country, age eligibility, and supervision status.
- Overlay present for a personal account but not a work or school account: ask the organization administrator whether Gemini Apps access and relevant Assistant-powered features are allowed.
- Only one language or region fails: treat it as a feature-availability limitation until Google documents support for that combination.
Google’s descriptions of mobile-app capabilities and device assistance explain that feature availability is not uniform. See what you can do with the Gemini mobile app and Google’s Device assistance guidance when the missing function involves controlling Android or another app. Do not infer that an unavailable command proves the overlay is broken.
Age and supervision restrictions can affect only selected capabilities, so a partial result is meaningful. If the panel launches and ordinary conversation works but a command involving another app is missing, classify that as a feature-availability issue first. Changing the default assistant will not add a capability that is unavailable for the account’s country, language, age, or supervision status.
Account for manufacturer-specific menu differences
The documented Google path is a reference, not a promise that every phone uses identical wording. A manufacturer may place assistant selection under a system-management, gesture, button, or default-app section. Use Settings search for these terms:
- Digital assistant app
- Device assistance app
- Default apps
- Assistant
If search returns several similarly named controls, choose the one that identifies the default app used when the system assistant is invoked. Changing a general voice-search preference is not necessarily the same as changing the digital assistant provider.
Touch activation also varies by model. Google specifically documents long-pressing the power button as an example; your device may expose a different supported gesture. Test the activation method shown in the phone’s assistant or gesture settings after the Google app is selected.

Some devices expose assistant behavior through a navigation-bar gesture or a hardware key instead of the power button. Use only the gesture listed in the device’s own settings; the important diagnostic question is whether that system invocation produces the overlay. If the gesture opens another assistant, return to the default-app control rather than changing unrelated display settings.
What not to assume is a universal fix
Google’s setup and availability pages establish the eligibility checks, assistant selection, Screen context controls, and feature restrictions above. They do not establish a universal overlay repair based on any of the following:
- granting a generic Display over other apps permission;
- clearing the Google or Gemini app cache;
- reinstalling the apps;
- reverting to an earlier app version; or
- installing a particular third-party utility.
Those actions may be suggested in community discussions, but they are not documented as general Gemini overlay fixes in the cited Google guidance. Applying them can create new variables, remove local data, or leave the device on an unsupported app version. First complete the documented checks and record the result of each one.
Avoid changing several variables at once. If you alter the assistant selection, language, account, and app version together, you will not know which change affected the result. Keep a short sequence: eligibility check, default-assistant check, mobile-assistant setup, launch test, then Screen context. This order isolates the launch layer before the content layer.

Decision checklist
- Confirm the device meets Google’s Android, RAM, form-factor, and Android Go requirements.
- Confirm that any work or school account has access to Gemini Apps and that age or supervision rules do not exclude the feature.
- Set the Google app as the Digital assistant app under the device’s default-app settings.
- Finish Gemini’s mobile-assistant setup.
- Invoke Gemini from another app and determine whether a panel appears or the full app opens.
- If the panel appears but cannot use the current page, enable the relevant Screen context controls: Use text from screen and/or Use screenshot.
- If only a command is missing, check country, language, account type, and supervision rather than changing overlay permissions.
- If all documented checks pass, send the complete device and account record to Google or the manufacturer for device-specific support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does tapping the Gemini app open the full app instead of an overlay?
Opening the app directly is different from invoking Gemini as the Android assistant. Set the Google app as the device’s Digital assistant app, finish Gemini’s mobile-assistant setup, and test from another app with the supported voice or touch invocation.
Does Gemini need the Android “Display over other apps” permission?
Google’s documented setup does not establish that generic permission as a universal fix. Check device eligibility, the default digital assistant, mobile-assistant setup, and Screen context first.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe overlay appears, but “Ask about screen” is missing. Is it broken?
Not necessarily. Google says contextual suggestions such as “Ask about screen” or “Ask about page” may appear only over some apps. Confirm Screen context settings and try asking a direct question about the visible content.
What is the difference between “Use text from screen” and “Use screenshot”?
Use text from screen lets Gemini work with text from the active display. Use screenshot supplies an image of the display for visual interpretation. They control screen content access and are separate from launching the assistant overlay.
Can a work or school account prevent Gemini overlay features?
It can limit access to Gemini Apps or features powered by Google Assistant. Compare with an eligible personal account only as a diagnostic, and ask the organization administrator whether access is enabled.
What information should I give support if the overlay still fails?
Provide the exact model, Android version, Android Go status, RAM if known, Google and Gemini app versions, account type, language, region, supervision status, selected digital assistant, activation method, and the precise result of the test.
The Bottom Line
Gemini’s Android overlay depends first on eligibility, the Google app being the default digital assistant, and completed mobile-assistant setup. If a panel opens but cannot use the current screen, check Use text from screen and Use screenshot under Screen context. Treat missing commands as possible country, language, account, age, or supervision limits, and escalate with a complete device record when the documented checks pass.
