When Gemini stops working, first identify which Google product surface has failed: the web app at gemini.google.com, Gemini in Chrome, or the Gemini mobile app. Each has different browser, device, language, location, account and administrator requirements. Read the complete error message and note exactly when it appears—before sign-in, after sign-in, while opening the app or after submitting a prompt. That information separates an eligibility problem from a browser, rollout or mobile-access limitation.
Use the matching checks below rather than applying Gemini in Chrome instructions to the web app or mobile-app steps to a work account. A generic message such as “Something went wrong” is not a complete diagnosis: Google says it can indicate that an account cannot access the web app at that moment, with location, age and account type among the possible reasons.

Start by identifying the Gemini surface that failed
“Gemini is not working” can describe three different products. Write down the surface before changing settings, because the prerequisites are not interchangeable.

Record the symptom before trying a fix
The point at which Gemini fails is useful evidence. Note the exact wording, capitalization and punctuation of the message, and record whether it appears:

- when the page or app first opens;
- when you choose a Google Account or enter credentials;
- immediately after sign-in;
- when you type or submit a prompt; or
- only when you use a particular feature, such as saved activity.
Also record the surface, device type, operating system, browser name and whether the account is personal, work or school. This does not prove the cause, but it prevents a common mistake: treating an account-eligibility message as if it were a broken phone or treating a Chrome-only feature as if it were the web app.
If gemini.google.com is not working
Check the browser first
Google lists Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera and Edgium as supported browsers for the Gemini web app. If you are using another browser or an embedded in-app browser, move the test to one of those listed browsers. Use the browser’s normal address bar and open gemini.google.com directly, then note whether the error changes.
A browser check is about compatibility, not a guarantee of access. A supported browser can still display a sign-in or eligibility error, so continue with the account checks if the same message remains.
Decide whether this feature needs sign-in
Some web-app features can be used without signing in. Additional features and saved activity require a Google Account. If the function that fails involves saved conversations, account history or another account-specific capability, sign in and test again. If you do not need those capabilities, test the available signed-out experience to determine whether the failure is tied to account access.

Do not interpret a successful signed-out test as proof that the account is fully eligible. It only shows that the particular no-sign-in path is available in that session.
Check personal versus work or school access
An organization can control whether its users can use Gemini Apps. If a work or school account fails after you select it, ask the organization’s administrator whether Gemini access has been enabled for that account or organizational unit. A personal account and a managed account can therefore behave differently on the same computer and browser.
When reporting the issue, state which account type was selected and whether another account reaches the app. Do not assume that switching accounts is a permanent fix; it may simply show that the original account has a different policy or eligibility status.
What “Something went wrong” can mean at sign-in
Google’s guidance for the web-app sign-in message “Something went wrong” says the account may be unable to access the web app at that moment. Possible reasons include location, age and account type, but the message itself does not identify which one applies. In other words, the wording is not enough to diagnose a particular account.

- Copy the complete message and note the account selected.
- Confirm whether the message appears before credentials are accepted or immediately after sign-in.
- Check that the account is the one you intended to use, especially if several accounts are signed in to the browser.
- If the message is exactly the sign-in error described above, try again later, as Google’s guidance recommends.
- If it persists, use the recorded surface, account type, location and timing when consulting Google’s help or feedback channels.
A later successful attempt can indicate a temporary eligibility or availability condition, but it does not establish that the browser or device was defective. Conversely, a repeated error does not prove a live service outage; the available help guidance does not provide current outage status.
When Gemini in Chrome does not appear or will not run
Gemini in Chrome is a separate feature with its own gatekeeping. Meeting one requirement does not override another, and Google says the feature is being rolled out gradually. You may therefore meet the listed conditions and still not have immediate access.
Verify the computer and Chrome profile
- Confirm that the computer is a Chromebook Plus, a Mac or a Windows computer.
- Update to the latest Chrome available for that computer.
- Open the Chrome profile you actually use and confirm that it is signed in. A Google Account signed in on a different browser profile does not automatically satisfy the signed-in Chrome-profile requirement.
Check language, region and age eligibility
Gemini in Chrome requires a supported device language and region, as well as age eligibility. Review the language configured for the device and Chrome profile, and confirm that the computer is being used in a supported location. If the account’s age information makes it ineligible, changing a browser preference will not resolve the restriction.

Account for gradual rollout and managed devices
Because availability is gradual, the absence of the feature can be a rollout state rather than a local failure. A work or school computer may also require an administrator to enable access. Ask the administrator to verify the policy for the specific account or organizational unit, and include the Chrome version, computer type, region and profile used in the request.

Do not use Gemini-in-Chrome instructions to troubleshoot a failure at gemini.google.com. The products share a name but not an identical availability test.
When the Gemini mobile app is unavailable
Check device, language and location availability
Google says mobile availability can vary by language, device, account and location. A phone that works for one person or country is not evidence that the app is available for every account or language. Record the phone model, operating-system environment, account type, selected language and country when describing the problem.
Check the account used by the app
Work and school users need access to Gemini Apps. If the app opens but refuses the managed account, the organization may not have enabled that access. Ask the administrator about Gemini Apps access rather than assuming the phone installation is damaged.

Gemini cannot be accessed in an Android Work Profile. If the app is being opened from the work container, test the personal Android profile with an eligible account. This restriction is different from a general Android sign-in failure, so moving the app to the personal profile is the relevant check.
Separate an access problem from a response problem
If the app opens, accepts a prompt and returns an answer, the original access failure has already been cleared; a poor, incomplete or incorrect answer is a different issue. Google’s official “Use Gemini Apps” guidance warns: “Gemini Apps can make mistakes. When using Gemini Apps, double-check responses and don’t rely on responses from Gemini Apps for professional advice.” Treat answer verification as a safety step, not as evidence that the sign-in or availability system is broken.
A practical decision path
Use this sequence to avoid random changes and to preserve useful evidence:
- Name the surface. Write “web app,” “Gemini in Chrome” or “mobile app.”
- Capture the error and timing. Record the exact text and whether it occurs before sign-in, after sign-in, on launch or on submission.
- Match the requirements. For the web app, check a supported browser and the sign-in need. For Gemini in Chrome, check the eligible computer, latest Chrome, signed-in profile, language, region, age and rollout. For mobile, check device, language, location, account access and Android profile.
- Identify account control. Mark the account as personal, work or school. Managed accounts may need administrator enablement.
- Retry only where the guidance supports it. For the described web sign-in message, Google recommends trying again later. Do not promise that the same step fixes unrelated errors.
- Escalate with specifics. Provide the surface, complete message, account type, device or browser, language and location, and the point at which the failure occurs through Google’s help or feedback channels.
What the available guidance cannot establish
A generic symptom cannot identify a live outage, a network fault, a damaged device or a particular account cause. The documented possibilities include eligibility, location, age, account type, supported software, language, device, rollout and administrator policy. If none of those checks explains the behavior, retain the exact message and platform details instead of claiming that one unverified fix restored access.
