Game companies use anti-cheat and anti-piracy technology to protect different parts of the same business: fair online play, digital distribution, player accounts, virtual economies, and revenue. Anti-cheat targets unfair play; anti-piracy controls unauthorized copying or access. The systems can overlap, but Sony’s public policies do not establish one universal anti-cheat or DRM product used in every PlayStation game.
Anti-cheat, anti-piracy and DRM do different jobs
These terms are related, but they are not interchangeable. A multiplayer game can need anti-cheat without needing aggressive copy protection, while a premium single-player game can use DRM without having any competitive mode to police.
| Control | Primary target | Typical purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Anti-cheat | Unfair play and manipulation | Detect or deter cheats, remove offenders, or restrict matchmaking access. |
| Anti-piracy protection | Unauthorized copying, distribution or use | Raise the cost of copying, tampering with, or using a game without authorization. |
| DRM | Access to digital software | Check licenses or entitlements and control how software can be used. |
| Online enforcement | Accounts, services and game data | Validate activity, suspend accounts, restrict devices or remove unauthorized items. |
What anti-cheat tries to catch
Depending on the game and platform, anti-cheat can target aimbots, wallhacks, automated play, memory manipulation, unauthorized client changes, exploit-assisted progression, boosting schemes, or account sharing. It may use checks in the game client, server-side validation, analysis of account behavior, or human review. Some PC products use privileged drivers, but that is not true of every anti-cheat system.
What anti-piracy and DRM try to control
Protection can include encryption, license authentication, tamper detection, entitlement checks, or restrictions on modified hardware and unauthorized software. These measures can delay or complicate unauthorized use; they cannot guarantee that a game will never be copied. Anti-cheat may contribute to these protections, but it is not simply another name for DRM.

Why cheating can threaten a game’s business
A small number of cheaters can still damage a multiplayer game if they make matches feel pointless. Players may stop entering ranked modes, spend less time in the game, or lose confidence that purchases and progression have value. Publishers can also face more support and moderation work, reputational damage, distorted virtual economies, and reduced value for streaming or esports audiences.
The commercial stakes extend beyond the initial sale. Live games depend on continued participation to support expansions, downloadable content, subscriptions, battle passes, and cosmetic purchases. Security controls are one way publishers try to preserve that participation and the value of the systems built around it.
In its March 2021 PlayStation 5 middleware announcement, Denuvo argued that cheating can reduce engagement, traffic, and publisher revenue. It cited a survey in which 77% of gamers said cheating could repel them from a game. That is a vendor-supplied marketing claim, not an independent industry-wide measurement. The announcement is available at Denuvo’s PlayStation 5 announcement.
Why the launch window matters to anti-piracy efforts
Publishers have a particular incentive to control unauthorized distribution near release: marketing attention, reviews, pre-orders, and early-adopter demand cluster around launch. Unauthorized copies or leaked builds can spread quickly, expose unfinished content, disrupt release plans, and undermine regional pricing or promotional access.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
That does not mean every unauthorized copy represents a lost sale. Some people who download a game would not have bought it, while others may purchase it later. The defensible point is that publishers see piracy as a risk to revenue, timing, and control over distribution; the exact number of sales it displaces is difficult to establish.
Denuvo’s 2021 announcement claimed that roughly 70% of a game’s revenue was earned in its first two weeks. This is a vendor-provided figure, not a universal industry fact. It helps explain why publishers may value delaying unauthorized access during release, but it does not show that a particular protection system saves a particular amount of money.
Why Sony is a useful example—and what its policies establish
Sony is a platform holder, digital storefront operator, publisher, and provider of online services. That gives it an interest in protecting not just an individual game’s executable, but also platform accounts, digital entitlements, online play, and transactions across its ecosystem.
Sony’s U.S. Software EULA says software is licensed rather than sold, restricts unauthorized distribution and cheating, and prohibits bypassing encryption, security, or authentication mechanisms. It also says SIE may use fraud-detection tools, telemetry, anti-cheat systems, and audits of account behavior. Some games may require players to accept separate third-party middleware terms, including terms for anti-cheat software on PC. See the U.S. Software EULA.

Sony’s U.S. PlayStation Terms of Service and Product Software License Agreement also address DRM, authentication, and measures against unauthorized use. These documents establish the authority Sony claims under those terms; they do not identify a single security product installed in every game. Consumer rights and contract rules can also differ by jurisdiction.
What the Denuvo announcement does—and does not—show
Denuvo announced in March 2021 that its anti-cheat technology was available to developers through Sony’s PlayStation 5 Tools and Middleware program. That supports the narrower statement that third-party security middleware was made available in Sony’s development ecosystem. It does not show that Sony uses Denuvo in every PlayStation game, or that every publisher adopted it. A studio’s choice, platform, game mode, and deployment can vary by title.
How layered game security works
Security systems can combine checks on the player’s device with validation by the publisher’s servers. Client-side checks can look for signs that game files or processes have been altered. Server-side systems can validate important records and actions, such as inventory, currency, purchases, match results, rankings, unlocks, and progression. Keeping authoritative data on a server makes it harder to permanently change that data by editing local files, and detection rules can sometimes be updated without replacing the entire game.
Companies may also analyze telemetry and account behavior to identify suspicious patterns. The exact signals, retention practices, and decision processes depend on the game and product; a general policy that permits telemetry does not disclose every implementation detail.

Why PC anti-cheat can be more intrusive
PC software runs on a more open platform than a locked-down console environment. Some anti-cheat tools therefore monitor the game environment more extensively, and some products use kernel-level drivers with high system privileges. That can help a tool detect certain forms of manipulation, but it also raises the consequences of design errors or compromise. It does not mean every anti-cheat tool uses a kernel driver or that every such driver is malicious.
Before accepting a third-party anti-cheat requirement, players can check what permissions it needs, when it runs, what data its provider says it collects, whether it remains after uninstalling the game, and whether the game works offline without it. Compatibility with accessibility software, virtualization, overlays, security tools, Linux, and mods may also matter. Sony’s EULA notes that some PC games may require agreement to separate middleware terms, but the EULA does not list every product or game.

Digital delivery makes games easier to distribute globally, but it also makes accounts, licenses, updates, and authentication central to access. Those systems can help control fraud, stolen accounts, unauthorized sharing, and access to in-game purchases as well as copying.
Sony announced on July 1, 2026, that production of physical discs would end in January 2028 for new PlayStation console games. The announcement says games already released or scheduled for disc release before then are not affected. This shift is relevant context for the growing role of digital entitlements, but it is an inference—not a stated reason for the decision—that digital distribution can make platform security more commercially important. See Sony’s disc-production announcement.

The costs and failure modes for players
Security controls involve trade-offs. A publisher may decide that stronger enforcement is worth inconvenience, but the existence of a security product does not prove that it works well or that every burden on players is justified.
- Privacy: Telemetry, device signals, or behavior analysis can raise questions about what is collected, how long it is kept, and who receives it.
- Performance and compatibility: A tool can add overhead or conflict with overlays, accessibility software, virtualization, mods, or other security programs; effects are product-specific.
- False positives: Unusual hardware, corrupted files, shared devices, network anomalies, or legitimate software can contribute to a mistaken flag. A meaningful appeal and review process matters.
- Account enforcement: Suspensions or device restrictions can affect legitimate players if detection or review is wrong. Players should understand the game’s enforcement and appeal process.
- Internet and server dependence: Authentication failures, service outages, account loss, delisting, or a publisher ending support can restrict access, even for a paying customer.
- Modding and preservation: Anti-tamper controls may obstruct accessibility changes, community fixes, archival access, or preservation work. Legal exceptions vary by jurisdiction.
- Security exposure: The more privilege a component has, the more serious the consequences could be if it is compromised; this is a general risk, not a claim about a specific product vulnerability.
Server-dependent features can disappear while offline portions remain playable, but the outcome depends on the title. Sony’s game-server notices provide examples of service changes, including a scheduled end to Destruction AllStars server support on November 25, 2026. A server shutdown is not, by itself, proof that every offline feature in that game becomes unavailable.
Does DRM actually stop piracy?
No system can guarantee permanent protection. A more realistic publisher goal is to delay unauthorized use, raise the cost of distributing or modifying a game, or protect a commercially important release period. Whether the benefit outweighs licensing fees, engineering effort, customer friction, support demands, and compatibility risks depends on the game’s threat model and implementation. Public evidence seldom makes it possible to calculate how many sales a particular DRM system saved.
What to check before buying a game with online security requirements
For a game whose access or features may depend on security software or remote services, these questions can clarify the trade-off:
Quick Recap
- Does it require a publisher account, a third-party account, or an internet connection for first launch?
- Is an online connection required for single-player, or only for multiplayer and cloud features?
- Does the PC version require separate anti-cheat middleware, and where are its permissions and privacy terms explained?
- What happens to campaigns, progression, or purchased content if servers close?
- Does enforcement include an appeal path for bans or access restrictions?
- Are mods, accessibility tools, or community servers supported or restricted?
- What refund rules apply if a required service or compatibility feature does not work for you?
