Final Fantasy Resonance’s combat concept began with a question: what might happen if Final Fantasy V’s job system met Final Fantasy VI’s distinctive characters? Producer Keisuke Nakashima says the team used that starting point to build a system that preserves character identity while giving players room to customize. Turn-order planning, stagger and abilities that carry between builds add the tactical layer. The full game is scheduled for release on October 22, 2026, so claims that it “feels so good” are best treated as a preview premise—not a verdict on the complete campaign.
What did Square Enix mean by combining FFV and FFVI?
In a Kotaku interview published October 2, 2026, producer Keisuke Nakashima described the first concept this way: “what if we take the job system from Final Fantasy 5 and the unique characteristics of each character in Final Fantasy 6, what would that look like?” He called the approach an experiment because the team had not combined those elements in this way before.

The distinction matters: this is Nakashima’s account of the team’s design starting point, not a claim that Resonance simply reproduces either older game. The FFV side suggests flexible roles; the FFVI side suggests characters with their own identities. Nakashima says the team also reexamined and incorporated a stagger system, aiming to keep characters distinctive while allowing more customization.
How do character identity and customization work together?
The documented system uses Visions as equipable sources of abilities. Players unlock abilities by using a Vision in battle. Once learned, an ability can remain available when the player equips a different Vision, provided the resulting setup stays within its cost limit. Some combinations can create synergies.

- Adventure awaits you beyond the horizon in FINAL FANTASY XIV.
- This product is a digital 60-Day Game Time Card for FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. It serves as a payment option that allows players to add 60 days of game time to their FFXIV account at the Standard subscription rate, subject to account limits. Both the game and game time are required to play.
- This product can be redeemed on service accounts registered with the Windows, Mac, PlayStation, or Steam versions of FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. However, it cannot be redeemed on service accounts that have only the XBOX or Nintendo Switch 2 versions registered.
That structure gives players a reason to experiment without making every character or build interchangeable by default: character-linked choices and learned abilities can inform a setup, while the cost cap constrains how much can be carried at once. The available descriptions establish the rules, but do not show how restrictive the limit feels across the full game or how well every combination is balanced.
What does stagger add to the battle loop?
Combat also asks players to manage timing, not just select abilities. The battle interface displays the coming turn order. Reducing an enemy’s stagger gauge lowers its defense and, when the gauge is depleted, prevents that enemy from taking its next action. That makes stagger a way to disrupt a threat as well as an opening for damage.

- The games that inspired a generation come to life once more, in the ultimate 2D pixel remaster!
- These games are newly developed remaster editions based on the original titles. Some of the changes and additional elements found in other remakes of these games are not included.
- The Anniversary Edition includes a pixel character sticker sheet.
- Universally updated 2D pixel graphics, including the iconic FINAL FANTASY character designs created by Kazuko Shibuya, the original artist and current collaborator.
- Beautifully rearranged soundtrack in a faithful FINAL FANTASY style, overseen by original composer Nobuo Uematsu.
After a Sweeping Stagger, the Extra Phase can enable a Vision-specific Resonance move. In practical terms, the system links three decisions: which abilities to bring, which enemy to disrupt, and when to use the resulting opportunity. That interaction is the clearest explanation for why the FFV/FFVI idea can feel like a layered combat system rather than a simple job swap.

Why is this also an adaptation of Brave Exvius?
Final Fantasy Resonance is based on Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. Nakashima told Nintendo Wire that the team wanted to make a new console game while retaining the mobile game’s appeal, changing systems to suit console play. Kotaku reports that the story was retained but reorganized: some character-episode material was folded into the main plot, battles were reworked and new story scenes were added.

- Updated and reconstructed visuals to be far more realistic and richly textured vs the original game
- Upgraded models for each character, graphical updates for a more immersive environment
- Estimated gameplay hours: 40 to 50 per title
- Sound: Players will be able to choose between original sound and the new, re-arranged sound
The presentation follows the same adaptation logic. Official materials describe the game as HD-2D; the PlayStation Blog’s September 3, 2026 overview says its cinematics render 3D CG in pixel form. Director Hiroto Furuya told Kotaku that the team built a 3D environment, placed pixel characters in it, then added camera movement and post-effects.

A PlayStation 5 demo covers the entire first chapter, and its save data can carry over to the full game, according to the PlayStation Blog. That gives players a way to judge the opening’s combat directly, but a first-chapter demo cannot establish how the full campaign’s builds, difficulty or pacing develop.
Square Enix lists the game for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Steam, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC. Its Japanese product page gives an October 22, 2026 release date for consoles and October 23 for Steam: Square Enix’s official product page. Dates and platform availability may vary by region.
