Farm equipment uses public roads during harvest because fields, farmyards and crop destinations are often separated by the road network. Tractors, combines and other machinery travel between fields and farms, while harvested crops are hauled toward markets, grain elevators and processing plants. For harvest work, public roads are often a necessary link between parts of the agricultural process.
Why farm equipment needs to use roads
Fields are not always adjacent to one another or connected by private farm lanes. Machinery may have to travel from a farmyard to a field, or between separate fields. Once crops are harvested, loads also need routes from fields to storage, grain elevators, markets and processing facilities. Local public roads connect these places, so equipment and crop transport sometimes share the same routes as other traffic.

Official guidance describes these trips but does not establish how often equipment travels on roads or how many miles it covers. The practical point is that road use can be part of completing seasonal field work and moving the harvest, rather than a detour chosen simply for convenience.

Why farm equipment moves more slowly than traffic
Farm machinery is built primarily to work in fields, not to keep pace with passenger vehicles. The Delaware Department of Transportation says much equipment is designed for field use and travels about 15–25 mph; Illinois guidance describes most farm equipment as traveling 15–20 mph. These are agency descriptions, not universal speed limits or guarantees about an individual machine.

Combines and other machines may also have attachments that make them take up more road space. The cited guidance does not establish a typical width, so the road footprint varies by equipment and configuration.
Why passing a tractor or combine takes care
Large, heavy equipment may accelerate, slow or stop with difficulty. MnDOT also notes that it can make wide turns, sometimes cross the center line while turning, and have blind spots. Machinery may enter a road from a field or driveway, so its next movement may not be obvious to someone approaching from behind.

For motorists, that combination means a slow vehicle may need more room than a car and may turn where a driver does not expect. MnDOT’s 2026 Minnesota advisory recommends slowing down, using caution, watching for debris, driving with headlights on and waiting for a safe place to pass. Give equipment room, particularly near field entrances and driveways, and do not assume it is turning until its movement is clear.

There is no single roadway rule that applies to every farm vehicle throughout the United States. States define and regulate equipment differently, including which machines need a slow-moving vehicle (SMV) emblem, which road classes they may use, and what lighting, height, width, permit or escort rules apply.

| Example jurisdiction | What its guidance says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Minnesota | MnDOT’s harvest guidance uses an under-30-mph threshold for SMV-emblem guidance. MnDOT harvest advisory, 2026 | A Minnesota example, not a nationwide threshold. |
| Indiana | Indiana State Police guidance says equipment traveling under 25 mph should display an SMV emblem. Indiana State Police farm-machinery guidance | The stated threshold differs from Minnesota’s. |
| Illinois | Illinois guidance says farm machinery cannot use controlled-access highways. Illinois Department of Transportation seasonal-safety guidance | Check the route and current Illinois rules before traveling. |
| California | Caltrans summarizes selected state-code provisions for the legal category “implement of husbandry.” Caltrans implements-of-husbandry summary | The legal category and provisions are California-specific. |
These examples illustrate why a rule from one state should not be applied to another. Operators should check the current transportation-agency guidance and applicable code for the state and road they plan to use.
What motorists and operators can do
For motorists
- Slow down when approaching farm equipment and leave space for it to stop or turn.
- Wait for a clear, safe passing opportunity; do not pass where visibility or road conditions make the maneuver unsafe.
- Watch for debris and for equipment entering or leaving a field or driveway.
- Use headlights as MnDOT advises during harvest travel, and stay alert rather than relying on a vehicle’s speed to predict its next move.
For equipment operators
- Use required lights and any applicable SMV emblem, following the rules for the state and route.
- Keep markings visible. DelDOT recommends considering reflective markings and retrofit lighting as visibility aids; compatibility and local requirements matter.
- Check loaded height against road limits and permit rules before traveling.
- Account for turns and road space when moving equipment between fields, and signal movements where the equipment and local rules allow.
What crash figures do—and do not—show
MnDOT reported 392 Minnesota crashes involving farm equipment from 2023 through 2025, with 12 deaths and 167 injuries. That is a Minnesota total for the stated three-year period, not a national crash count. A 2025 MnDOT report gave a different overlapping period—2022 through 2024—with 455 crashes, eight deaths and 180 injuries. Because the periods overlap, the figures should not be added together or treated as independent totals.

The figures describe crashes in Minnesota; they do not establish how many harvest-season road trips equipment makes nationwide. The road-safety guidance is most useful as a reminder that farm machinery may be slow, large and turning unexpectedly, so both operators and other road users need to allow for it.
