Why Exposure to a Firearm Suicide May Not Mean Safer Gun Storage

Short answer: Knowing that a firearm suicide occurred does not reliably predict safer storage in the household. Families may still keep guns loaded or unlocked because of defensive-storage preferences, convenience, multiple firearms, accessible long guns or a lack of suitable locking equipment. Storage is a separate behavior that can limit unauthorized or impulsive access, and its apparent benefit differs by age, storage practice, firearm type and outcome.

Exposure and storage are different signals

Experiencing or learning about a firearm suicide has not been shown to cause a household to change how it stores guns. A household can understand the danger and still leave one firearm loaded, keep a long gun accessible, or lock only some of its guns. Practical barriers include the cost or unavailability of a safe, the time required to unlock a firearm, a belief that a defensive gun must be immediately accessible, and the difficulty of controlling keys or combinations when several firearms are present.

That distinction matters because “aware of suicide risk” and “firearms are inaccessible” describe different conditions. A gun placed out of sight or on a high shelf may remain quickly usable by a child, visitor or person in crisis. A household may also unload one firearm while leaving another loaded, so checking a single gun does not establish that all household firearms are secured.

What the evidence shows—and what it does not

Source and design Population or measure Finding Important qualification
JAMA Network Open, 2025, case-control study Adult and adolescent/young-adult firearm-suicide decedents For adults, locking or unloading household firearms was not associated with whether the decedent used a firearm. For adolescents and young adults, the odds of firearm-suicide method were substantially lower when all household firearms were locked. The age difference means an adult result should not be generalized to youth, or vice versa. The study addresses storage and method, not whether exposure to a previous suicide changed storage behavior.
Grossman and colleagues, 2004, nationally representative mortality-followback study Household firearm storage and firearm suicide Locked storage was associated with lower odds than unlocked storage (odds ratio 0.39, 95% CI 0.24–0.66). Unloaded storage was associated with lower odds than loaded storage (odds ratio 0.30, 95% CI 0.18–0.49). These are observational associations, not proof that one storage change alone caused the difference.
U.S. Government authors, 2023, National Violent Death Reporting System analysis Storage before death by firearm type People who used a long gun had five times greater odds of storing it unloaded than people who used a handgun. Unloading alone therefore does not describe the full risk pattern for long-gun owners; locked status and access still matter.
JAMA Pediatrics, 2019, Monte Carlo model using 2015 data Potential effect of increasing the share of households that lock every firearm The model estimated that 6%–32% of youth firearm deaths might be prevented, depending on how strongly an intervention motivated complete locking. In one scenario, moving 20% of households with unlocked guns to locking all guns corresponded to an estimated 72–135 prevented youth firearm fatalities. These are modeled projections, not observed results from a single real-world campaign.

How common unsafe storage remains

CDC surveillance from 2021–2022 illustrates why awareness alone cannot be treated as a safety measure. Across eight states, 18.4%–50.6% of respondents reported a firearm in or around the home. Among respondents with a firearm, 19.5%–43.8% reported that at least one firearm was stored loaded. Among households with a child or adolescent and a loaded firearm, 25.2%–41.4% reported at least one loaded firearm stored unlocked. These are state ranges, not a single national estimate.

The underlying hazard is substantial: the U.S. firearm-suicide rate was 8.1 per 100,000 people in 2022, the highest rate since 1968, according to the CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Why a previous suicide may not change storage habits

Defensive-access preferences

Some owners believe a firearm must be ready for immediate defensive use. That preference can conflict with a locked, unloaded setup, especially when the owner has not selected a storage device that permits authorized access without leaving the gun broadly available.

Multiple firearms and partial compliance

Locking a handgun used daily does not secure a second handgun, a rifle in a closet or ammunition stored nearby. Suicide risk is affected by the easiest firearm to reach, so “most guns are locked” is not equivalent to “all guns are inaccessible.”

Long guns and the limits of unloading

Long guns are often stored unloaded, yet they may remain visible or reachable. The 2023 surveillance analysis found that long-gun users were more likely than handgun users to have stored the firearm unloaded, but that finding does not establish that the gun was locked or that ammunition was stored separately.

Equipment and routine barriers

A household may lack a lock box, safe, cable lock, trigger lock or lockable ammunition container. Even when equipment is available, keys and combinations may be left where children or a person in crisis can find them. Convenience can gradually turn a locked routine into an unlocked one.

Is locking a gun enough?

Locking is an important access barrier, but it is not a complete prevention strategy. CDC guidance, updated July 5, 2024, says secure storage in a safe or lock box can help prevent unauthorized access and use, including by children and people at risk of harming themselves or others. CDC also states that putting a firearm out of sight or out of reach is not safe storage and is not enough to prevent use by children or unauthorized adults.

CDC’s recommended layers are to store firearms unloaded and locked, secure ammunition separately, and use an appropriate device such as a cable lock, trigger lock, lock box or safe. These products create barriers; no particular device can promise to prevent suicide.

A safer storage plan when someone may be at risk

  1. Act on immediate danger first. If someone may attempt suicide now, do not leave that person alone. Seek emergency or crisis support and remove firearms from that person’s access while help is arranged. Temporary removal from the home is the clearest way to eliminate household access during an acute crisis.
  2. Secure every firearm, not just the one normally used. Count handguns, rifles and shotguns, including firearms stored in vehicles or outbuildings. Lock each one in a safe or lock box, or use an appropriate cable or trigger lock as an additional barrier.
  3. Unload before locking. Confirm the chamber and magazine are empty according to the firearm’s instructions. Do not assume that an unloaded long gun is safe if it remains accessible.
  4. Separate ammunition. Place ammunition in a locked container separate from the firearms. Keep keys, codes and spare keys under the control of a responsible adult.
  5. Check the whole household. Ask about firearms owned by relatives, roommates or visitors. A child or adolescent can reach a gun that belongs to someone else, and a single unsecured firearm defeats an otherwise careful plan.
  6. Reassess after changes. Recheck storage after a move, a new firearm purchase, a change in household members, medication or mental-health status, or any return of suicidal thoughts. Project ChildSafe safety kits and the VA, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and NSSF safe-firearm-storage toolkit provide additional practical guidance; availability can vary by location.

Choosing a storage method

Method Access barrier Best use and limitation
Lock box Encloses the firearm and limits unauthorized handling Useful for a single handgun or small number of firearms; it must remain locked whenever the gun is not in immediate authorized use.
Gun safe Locks multiple firearms behind a stronger enclosure Suitable for households with several firearms; the combination or key must not be accessible to an at-risk person.
Cable or trigger lock Blocks firing or action movement Useful as an added layer; it does not replace locking the firearm away from unauthorized users when the surrounding storage remains accessible.
Locked ammunition container Separates ammunition from firearms Supports a layered plan; ammunition should not be left beside an unlocked firearm.
Temporary removal from the home Removes household access entirely Most decisive during an acute crisis, provided the receiving person or facility stores the firearms lawfully and securely.

The practical test is not whether a household has heard about firearm suicide. It is whether every firearm is unloaded, locked, and inaccessible to an unauthorized or temporarily unsafe person, with ammunition secured separately and a plan for periods of acute risk.
