Why Exported Snapchat Memories Lose Their Dates—and How to Fix Photo EXIF

If exported Snapchat Memories show the download date instead of when they were taken, the date may be missing from the media file even though it remains in the export’s history data. Snapchat documents how to export Memories, but does not confirm this as the cause. A third-party repair provider, MemoriesExport, attributes the mismatch to capture dates stored in memories_history.json rather than embedded in each photo or video. The practical fix it describes is to match that history data to the exported media and write the date into the appropriate metadata fields.

Why exported Memories can show the wrong date

According to MemoriesExport, Snapchat’s export may leave photo EXIF capture-date fields and video QuickTime creation-date fields empty while retaining the original capture date in memories_history.json. If a photo library cannot find a capture date in the media file, it may display a download or import date instead. That explanation comes from the repair provider; Snapchat’s export help pages do not confirm it.

This distinction matters because a file’s filesystem timestamps are not necessarily its capture date. Created or Modified may reflect when a file was downloaded, extracted, or changed. For a photo, the relevant embedded field to check is EXIF DateTimeOriginal.

Export your Memories with the history file intact

Snapchat provides two routes: export individual or selected Snaps in the app, or request a Memories-only My Data archive. The latter is the route described for downloading an archive and working with its history data.

Request a Memories-only My Data archive

  1. Sign in to Snapchat’s My Data page and select My Data.
  2. Enable Export your Memories, choose Request Only Memories, and select a date range.
  3. Submit the request. When Snapchat notifies you that the export is ready, download the ZIP file.
  4. Extract the ZIP, then open index.html and choose Memories. Snapchat says you can download individual Memories or all of them from there.

Snapchat says it strives to deliver data within seven days, but large downloads can take longer. Its help page instructs users to extract the ZIP and open the resulting folder.

Export individual or selected Snaps in the app

  1. From Snapchat’s Camera screen, swipe up to open Memories.
  2. Press and hold a Snap, or select multiple Snaps.
  3. Tap Export and choose where to download them.

Snapchat documents this in-app export for individual or selected Snaps. If you need to use the vendor-described date repair, retain the full My Data export and its memories_history.json file; do not keep only the media files.

How the date repair works

MemoriesExport describes its workflow as a post-export process: it reads memories_history.json, matches history entries to exported media, and writes the dates into the media’s metadata. It describes separate metadata targets for photos and videos:

Videos QuickTime creation-date metadata

These are distinct formats, not interchangeable fields: EXIF applies to the photo workflow described by the provider, while the provider says it writes QuickTime date metadata for videos. The procedure and its claims are those of MemoriesExport, not instructions confirmed by Snapchat.

Verify the embedded capture date, not just the file timestamp

For a photo, MemoriesExport recommends checking EXIF DateTimeOriginal or, on Windows, opening Properties → Details → Date taken. A file’s Created or Modified timestamp can still show the download or extraction time, so those values alone do not establish whether the embedded capture date was repaired. You can also check how a photo library imports and displays the image, but behavior may vary by app.

What the repair may not restore

MemoriesExport reports that the exact order of several Snaps taken on the same day may not be recoverable because the export may not contain enough information to reconstruct their within-day sequence. Treat that as a limitation reported by the provider, not a Snapchat-confirmed rule. The available documentation also does not establish compatibility across every operating system or photo library.
