The STOXX Europe 600 rose 10% in the second quarter of 2026, its strongest quarterly performance since October 2020, while investors reduced their dependence on a handful of highly valued US technology giants. Europe is not an AI-free market; its benchmark simply spreads exposure across more countries, industries and companies.
What happened to European shares in the second quarter of 2026?
Reuters reported that the STOXX 600 gained 10% in Q2 2026, the index’s strongest quarterly advance since October 2020. Technology led the STOXX 600 on 30 June and was on track to outperform its Wall Street counterpart for both the month and the quarter.

That performance does not establish a permanent change in leadership. It describes a specific period, and the STOXX provider’s index levels and return figures can change intraday. Any comparison with the S&P 500 must therefore use the same dates, currency and return definition.
“What’s different about Europe is: you’re not paying for that (economic) growth commonly … and with companies that are less exciting than U.S. tech, or maybe Asian semis, that’s creating quite a lot of opportunities in attracting value stocks.”

Why concentration makes Europe look more defensive
The European Central Bank’s 2026 analysis found that the Magnificent 7 accounted for roughly 40% of S&P 500 market capitalisation. By contrast, ASML and SAP together represented about 4% of the Euro Stoxx 600’s capitalisation.

This gap changes how the two benchmarks respond to the same news. A sharp re-rating of a few US AI leaders can move a large portion of the S&P 500 at once. In the European index, the performance impact of any two companies is smaller because exposure is distributed across hundreds of constituents. “Defensive” in this context means less index dependence on a small group of AI-linked mega-caps, not protection from an equity-market decline.

The breadth of the STOXX Europe 600
STOXX describes the index as “a broad measure of the European equity market.” It contains 600 components across 17 countries and 11 industries, covering nearly 90% of the investable European market. That breadth gives investors exposure to multiple national economies and business models rather than a single technology trade.
Europe still benefits from artificial-intelligence investment
Calling the European rally a move away from AI would be misleading. ASML supplies equipment used in advanced chip manufacturing, while SAP, STMicroelectronics, Infineon and other European companies can benefit from data-centre, semiconductor and enterprise-software spending. The ECB and Reuters both identify these firms as part of Europe’s AI sensitivity.
The distinction is between AI beneficiaries and an index whose returns are dominated by AI-dependent mega-cap valuations. European companies can participate in the AI build-out without making the whole regional benchmark hinge on the earnings expectations of a few US names.

STOXX 600 versus S&P 500: what the numbers actually say
| Comparison | STOXX Europe 600 | S&P 500 |
|---|---|---|
| Market reach | 600 components in 17 countries and 11 industries; nearly 90% of investable European market | US large-cap benchmark; the supplied 2026 analysis focuses on its concentration in the Magnificent 7 |
| Concentration indicator | ASML and SAP together were about 4% of Euro Stoxx 600 capitalisation, according to the ECB | Magnificent 7 were roughly 40% of S&P 500 market capitalisation, according to the ECB |
| Recent reported performance | Up 10% in Q2 2026, the strongest quarterly gain since October 2020, according to Reuters | No directly comparable return figure is established by the cited report |
| AI exposure | Meaningful exposure through ASML, SAP, STMicroelectronics, Infineon and others, but spread across the index | Heavily influenced by the valuation and earnings outlook of a small set of mega-cap technology companies |
| Return formats | STOXX publishes price, net-return and gross-return versions | Use a price or total-return series that matches the European series |
How to make a fair performance comparison
- Fix the observation window. Compare identical start and end dates, such as the same quarter or calendar year. A 30 June news report cannot be used to describe performance through a later date without updating both indices.
- Use one currency. The ECB’s chart converts returns into euros for comparability. Comparing euro-adjusted European returns with an unadjusted dollar S&P 500 series mixes equity performance with currency movements.
- Match the return type. A price index excludes dividends, while a net-return index reinvests dividends after withholding taxes and a gross-return index reinvests them before taxes. STOXX publishes all three versions; the selected S&P 500 series must use the same basis.
- Check concentration and sectors. Index-level results can conceal whether gains came from a few mega-caps or from broad participation across industries and countries.
- Separate beneficiaries from dependencies. Identify companies that sell equipment, chips or software into AI investment, then distinguish that exposure from an index whose valuation is primarily driven by expectations for a few AI leaders.
- Account for the macro backdrop. Rates, energy costs, geopolitics, earnings breadth, valuation changes and currency moves can all alter the relative result.
Can European outperformance continue?
No published figure in the cited material proves that Europe will keep beating the S&P 500. The Q2 result could reflect a durable broadening of market leadership, a temporary rotation toward companies viewed as better value, or both.

- Investors may continue preferring broader earnings participation over dependence on a few expensive US technology stocks.
- European industrial, semiconductor and software companies can gain if AI-related capital spending remains strong.
- A sustained shift toward value-oriented shares could help the less glamorous companies highlighted by Reuters.
Reasons the lead could reverse
- A renewed rally in the Magnificent 7 would have an outsized effect on the S&P 500 because of their approximately 40% combined weight.
- Changes in interest rates can alter the relative appeal of long-duration growth shares and value-oriented businesses.
- Energy shocks, geopolitical events and differences in national economies can affect European markets unevenly.
- Currency movements can erase or amplify an investor’s result even when local-market performance is unchanged.
Which index is better for an investor right now?
There is no universal winner. The STOXX Europe 600 offers wider geographic and industry dispersion and less dependence on a handful of AI-linked US mega-caps. The S&P 500 offers greater exposure to those mega-cap growth companies. The appropriate choice depends on whether the objective is broader regional diversification or a larger allocation to US large-cap technology leadership.
Best Value
Whichever benchmark is used, evaluate it with a matched currency, date range and return type. A headline quarterly gain is informative, but it is not a forecast and does not remove the risk of losses.
