Why European Nightjars Fly Slowly While Hunting but Travel Far Between Feeding Grounds

European nightjars use two different flight solutions for two different jobs. While hunting, they fly slowly and maneuver around airborne insects, sometimes hovering. During seasonal migration, they cover long distances by moving quickly across places where feeding is poor and slowing down in habitats that can support refueling. Their broad, slotted wing tips appear to make that versatility possible, trading some high-speed lift efficiency for better control at low speed.

“Travel far” can also describe a local breeding-season commute rather than migration. Radio-tracked birds averaged hundreds of metres between roosting and feeding areas, while later GPS observations recorded some individual flights longer than 3 km. Those nightly movements should not be confused with journeys between continents.

Nightjar flight happens on three different scales

The European nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus) is both an aerial insectivore and a long-distance migrant. That combination makes the apparent contradiction in the title easier to resolve: hunting, nightly commuting and seasonal migration impose different aerodynamic and navigational demands.

Movement scale What the bird is doing Evidence and measured figures How to interpret it
Hunting Taking insects in the air at low speed Wind-tunnel observations in 2026; three individuals flying at 2.6–11 m/s Slow, maneuverable flight is favored, with an aerodynamic cost at higher speeds
Breeding-season commute Flying from a breeding area to feeding locations and back Mean maximum nightly distance of 747 m in one radio-tracking study; later GPS flights sometimes exceeded 3 km Local movements can be substantial but are not migration
Seasonal migration Moving between breeding and wintering regions About 320 km per day across ecological barriers and about 200 km per day over more suitable areas in a 2022 tracking study Pace changes with the usefulness of the landscape below

Keeping these scales separate prevents a common mistake: treating a short nightly feeding flight as if it were part of the bird’s transcontinental migration, or assuming that migration proceeds at one constant speed.

Why hunting favors slow, controlled flight

Broad, slotted wing tips generate useful lift at low speed

The nightjar’s outer wing is broad and divided into several slots. In the 2026 wind-tunnel study, the researchers interpreted that shape as an adaptation that helps the bird produce lift while flying slowly. Slotted tips can keep airflow attached in conditions where a narrower, less segmented wing would be more prone to losing lift, giving the bird control while it turns after insects.

Low-speed hunting is not simply slow cruising. A nightjar must change direction quickly, adjust its position relative to an insect and sometimes hold a nearly fixed position in the air. Those maneuvers require a wing that remains effective when forward speed is low and the airflow is constantly changing.

The same shape is less efficient at higher speed

The wind-tunnel measurements also found a double wing-tip vortex at cruising speeds. The researchers associated that wake pattern with reduced span efficiency, meaning the wing is not using its full span as efficiently to generate lift at those speeds. In practical terms, the wing configuration that helps low-speed control does not maximize aerodynamic economy during fast, straight flight.

This is a trade-off, not a mechanical failure. A wing optimized solely for high-speed efficiency could be less suitable for the tight turns and slow approaches required to catch insects. The nightjar instead carries a shape that covers several jobs adequately, with low-speed handling taking priority during feeding.

Thrust can come from the upstroke

The study detected thrust produced by the outer wing during the upstroke. That finding matters because many people picture the upstroke only as a recovery movement before the next downstroke. For a maneuvering bird, however, parts of the wing can contribute to forward force during both phases of the wingbeat. The measured wake shows that nightjar flight is an active, three-dimensional process rather than a simple flap downward followed by a passive lift.

What the 2026 aerodynamic study does—and does not—show

The PLOS Biology work used a wind tunnel to measure wake structures and flight mechanics. The birds flew at controlled airspeeds between 2.6 and 11 metres per second. Depending on the variable being analyzed, the researchers recorded 78 to 212 flight-sequence observations, but those observations came from only three individuals.

That design is valuable for isolating aerodynamics. It allows researchers to connect a particular wingbeat or wing-tip shape with a measured vortex, lift pattern or thrust signal. It does not reproduce every condition of wild hunting: natural prey movement, turbulence, darkness, fatigue, social interactions and changing wind are all simplified or absent.

Nor does a lower measured lift-generation efficiency at higher speed provide a complete energy budget for migration. Total migration cost also depends on wind assistance, body mass, altitude, stopovers, food intake and how long a bird spends flying. The aerodynamic result supports a performance compromise; it is not a direct measurement of the calories required to cross a desert.

Migration uses a “rush or relax” strategy

Barriers are crossed quickly

Tracking of 24 nightjars from breeding populations in Mongolia, Belgium and the United Kingdom found that migration speed changed with the ecological setting. Birds moved rapidly across barriers such as the Sahara and Arabian deserts, where opportunities to find insects and shelter are limited. The 2022 study estimated roughly 320 km per day across such inhospitable regions.

The same birds covered about 200 km per day across more suitable areas. These are study estimates from tracked migrations, not fixed speeds for every European nightjar or every weather condition. Tailwinds, route choice, individual condition and the exact definition of a migration segment can all alter the daily distance.

Suitable landscapes invite slower movement

When a migrating nightjar reaches a landscape with better prospects for feeding, it can slow down and search for profitable patches. A slower ground speed gives the bird more opportunity to identify feeding areas, land, rest and rebuild energy reserves before the next demanding leg.

A British Trust for Ornithology account of GPS-based habitat research describes rapid crossings of the Mediterranean Sea, the Sahara and equatorial forests, followed by slower movement around those barriers in mixed habitats. The pattern is not a nonstop dash from Europe to Africa or back again. It is a sequence of flights and pauses shaped by where food can be found.

Stopovers are part of the journey

The same BTO account reports around nine separate stops in both spring and autumn for the tracked birds. Individual stops lasted from one to 27 days. A stopover can therefore be a brief pause or a substantial staging period, depending on the bird’s condition and local conditions.

Researchers still do not know exactly how nightjars assess habitat while migrating. Visual assessment at twilight or in limited night light has been proposed, but that mechanism has not been demonstrated. The tracking data show where movement slows and stops; they do not by themselves reveal whether the bird is selecting habitat using sight, smell, learned landmarks, weather cues or a combination of signals.

How far nightjars travel during the breeding season

The 747-metre figure describes a local nightly pattern

In a radio-tracking study of 31 nightjars in Thetford Forest, the mean maximum distance between breeding and feeding locations in a night was 747 m. “Mean maximum” is important: it describes the farthest recorded movement within each bird’s nightly activity pattern, averaged across the tracked population. It is not the distance of every flight, nor the total distance flown after all turns and hunting movements are added.

GPS revealed longer trips to particular feeding sites

Later GPS observations recorded rapid foraging flights, often exceeding 3 km, to discrete locations that birds revisited on subsequent nights. These observations suggest that some individuals will make a longer commute when a dependable feeding hotspot justifies the trip.

The 747 m radio-tracking result and the GPS observations should remain separate. They came from different studies using different tracking methods and sampling designs, so they cannot be merged into one new average. Together, they show that breeding-season movements range from short local flights to occasional multi-kilometre journeys.

How the wing trade-off and migration strategy fit together

The wing shape helps explain how a nightjar can hunt effectively without requiring a wing optimized for only one speed. Broad, slotted tips support lift and control at the low speeds useful for aerial feeding. The associated reduction in high-speed span efficiency means the bird may not be an aerodynamic specialist for fast cruising, but migration does not require uninterrupted maximum-speed flight.

Instead, migration combines periods of forward travel with decisions about where to slow, feed and rest. A bird can cross a desert relatively quickly, then exploit a favorable habitat at a lower pace. Stopovers reduce the need to carry enough energy for an entire continental journey in one flight. The result is a behavioral strategy that complements, rather than cancels out, the wing’s aerodynamic compromise.

Common misunderstandings about the title

“Slowly” does not mean nightjars cannot fly fast

The hunting description refers to the speed and maneuverability useful when pursuing insects. It is not a claim that the bird has one unchanging speed or lacks the ability to make rapid flights. The wind-tunnel work covered a range of controlled speeds, and tracking studies recorded fast movements during migration and local commuting.

“Travel far” does not always mean migration

A nightjar may travel several kilometres to a feeding location during the breeding season, but that is a local commute. Seasonal migration covers a different geographic scale and includes barriers, stopovers and changes in pace. A distance measured between a roost and a feeding site cannot be used as a migration distance.

Daily migration distance is not a species-wide rule

The approximately 320 km and 200 km daily estimates describe tracked birds in particular ecological settings. They should not be presented as a timetable that every nightjar follows. Weather, wind direction, food availability, geography and individual condition can shift the pace from one night or one migration to the next.

What can be concluded with confidence

  • European nightjars face competing demands: precise, low-speed maneuvering for insect capture and efficient enough forward travel for migration.
  • Their broad, multi-slotted wing tips are consistent with strong low-speed lift and control, while the measured wake indicates lower lift-generation efficiency at higher speeds.
  • Migration is segmented. Birds cross poor habitat quickly, slow in more favorable landscapes and make multiple stopovers.
  • Local feeding commutes vary widely. One tracked population averaged 747 m for its maximum nightly breeding-to-feeding distance, while later GPS work found some flights longer than 3 km.
  • The aerodynamic evidence comes from three birds in a controlled wind tunnel, so it should not be treated as a complete measurement of wild migration energetics.

These findings resolve the apparent paradox: nightjars do not use one flight mode for every task. Their wings support the slow, agile handling needed to hunt, while their movement strategy lets them cover long seasonal distances by combining fast barrier crossings with slower foraging and extended stopovers.
