European smartphone sales through operators fell 4% year over year in Q2 2026, less than the 11% decline in open-market sales. Operators therefore gained share relative to retailers, but their sales did not grow: the total market was down 8%. Counterpoint Research attributes the gap to channel mix: operator purchases tend to be more premium and more often made on contract, leaving the channel comparatively less exposed as memory-cost pressures hit lower-priced phones.
What happened to operator and open-market sales?
Counterpoint Research’s Europe Channel Share Tracker reported that, in Q2 2026, total European smartphone sales declined 8% year over year. Operator-channel sales declined 4%, while open-market sales fell 11%. Because operator sales contracted more slowly, the operator channel gained relative share against the open market. That is a shift in the mix of sales, not evidence that operators sold more phones than a year earlier.

The figures describe sales in Counterpoint’s channel tracker. They should not be conflated with shipment estimates, which use a separate measure.

Counterpoint’s explanation centers on the different kinds of phones and purchases common to each channel. Associate Director Jan Stryjak said operator sales are “typically more high-end than through the open market, as more are purchased on a contract.” When memory costs put pressure on lower-priced smartphones, that segment’s weakness weighed more heavily on open-market sales.

Counterpoint said the collapse of the low end because of the memory price crisis had benefited the operator channel comparatively. This is an explanation of the relative channel performance, not proof that every country, operator, or contract buyer followed the same pattern. Nor does it mean that budget phones vanished: the claim is that pressure in the low end was strong enough to change the balance between channels.
Which brands led or grew in the operator channel?
Apple overtook Samsung to become the leading brand by share in Europe’s operator channel in Q2 2026, according to Counterpoint. Motorola and vivo were the fastest-growing brands year over year in that channel. The publicly available report text does not provide exact brand shares or growth rates, so a numerical ranking beyond those statements is not established.

How did results differ across Europe?
Counterpoint’s separate Q2 shipment analysis found 35 million smartphone shipments in Europe, down 10% year over year and the weakest second quarter since Q2 2023. It described Western Europe as performing better than expected, supported by Apple’s strength and marginal Samsung growth. Eastern Europe was more affected as squeezed budget segments hurt Chinese manufacturers and most Chinese OEMs struggled. These regional observations do not establish how operator sales changed in individual countries.

What do Q1 prices and the 2026 outlook add?
Omdia’s Q1 2026 figures provide separate context for the market’s price mix. For Europe excluding Russia, Omdia reported 33.0 million smartphone units, up 2% year over year. It also reported a €580 average selling price and said phones priced below €200 made up 25% of shipments, then a record-low share. These are Omdia’s Q1 estimates, not Counterpoint’s Q2 channel results.
Omdia forecast that shipments into Europe would decline 12% over full-year 2026, with most of the fall expected in the second half. That was a forecast published in May, not a confirmed full-year outcome. Separately, Counterpoint expected operators to keep gaining share over the following few quarters as lower-end phones remained under pressure. Counterpoint also noted that stronger promotions by independent retailers could mitigate price rises and stimulate open-market sales, limiting that expected shift.
