European diesel refining margins fell about 7% on Thursday, 1 October 2026, as markets reacted to discussion of possible emergency-reserve releases. The benchmark Reuters cited was low-sulphur gasoil futures at $77.44 per barrel above Brent crude at 1606 GMT, down $5.77 from the previous close. That market move came before the G7 announced its coordinated release plan on 2 October.
What the 7% decline measures
Reuters reported a roughly 7% fall in European diesel refining margins on 1 October. Its price marker was the spread between low-sulphur gasoil futures and Brent crude futures: gasoil traded $77.44 per barrel above Brent at 1606 GMT, a $5.77-per-barrel decline from the previous close. Reuters reported the market snapshot.
This gasoil-Brent spread, also called a crack spread, compares a refined-product price with a crude-oil price. A narrower spread means the market was valuing gasoil less highly relative to Brent at that observation. It is not a universal realized margin for every European refinery, nor does the snapshot show what a particular refinery earned after its own crude costs, yields, operating expenses, contracts and timing.
Why margins fell before the G7 announcement
At the time of the Reuters report, European countries were discussing possible releases of emergency diesel reserves. Two EU diplomats told Reuters that an EU energy taskforce would meet on Friday morning. Reuters identified those discussions as the immediate context for the market reaction; the finalized G7 plan had not yet been announced.

Reuters also reported, citing people briefed on the matter, that China’s refiners had suspended oil-product exports for October. That detail was attributed to sources and was not an official Chinese announcement in the cited report.
What the G7 decided on 2 October
The following day, G7 leaders announced a coordinated release through the International Energy Agency (IEA): 100 million barrels over four months, with a substantial diesel release front-loaded within the first 20 days. The G7 Évian statement does not specify the exact number of diesel barrels or country-by-country allocations.

The declaration says the 100-million-barrel coordination accounts for commitments already fulfilled and is to begin immediately. It also says G7 members will coordinate refinery maintenance schedules and refrain from energy and energy-product export restrictions between G7 countries. The leaders called on other producers to avoid bans that could worsen market tensions.
A commitment is not the same as physical delivery. The statement asks the IEA to monitor implementation, but does not establish how much diesel has reached buyers or what effect the release has had on prices.

How this fits the supply picture
EU conditions reported on 29 September
The European Commission’s 29 September Oil Coordination Group update said EU supply remained stable at that point, even as diesel and jet-fuel prices were high. It reported that commercial stocks in Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) were below their five-year average but had been stable in recent weeks, and that European refineries were running near maximum capacity. IEA account on 2 October
On 2 October, the IEA said roughly 325 million barrels of the 400-million-barrel collective action announced in March had already been released. It also reported that Middle East crude exports had recovered significantly, while refined-product flows remained severely constrained; attacks on Russian refineries were worsening the diesel situation. The March action and the later G7 coordination are therefore not interchangeable measures: the former was already partly delivered, while the latter newly set out a coordinated schedule that accounts for fulfilled commitments. Will the reserve release lower diesel prices?
It could add supply and ease near-term pressure, but the announcement alone cannot establish the size or duration of any price effect. The timing and quantity that actually reach the market matter, as do refinery output, product flows and demand. Euronews quoted Wood Mackenzie’s Alan Gelder saying a further release would “only buy time” while global diesel supply remained below demand; that is an analyst assessment, not a measured post-release result. Kpler analyst George Shaw cautioned that drawing down strategic stocks erodes an important buffer. Euronews’ report and analyst comments.
The evidence available in the cited announcement and updates does not yet show the post-release price outcome. The reported 7% margin decline belongs to 1 October’s market snapshot and should not be treated as the measured effect of a plan announced the next day.
