An Ethereum decentralized-exchange (DEX) swap can deliver fewer tokens than its quote for three main reasons: your own trade moves the pool price, the market changes while the transaction waits for inclusion, or transaction ordering exposes the swap to adverse maximal extractable value (MEV), such as a sandwich attack. These causes are related but not identical. A setting called slippage tolerance limits how much worse an execution may be accepted; it cannot guarantee that the original quote will be preserved.
This explanation applies to Ethereum-based DEX swaps, particularly automated market makers (AMMs). Centralized exchanges use different matching and custody mechanisms and are outside the scope here.

The short answer: three different effects can reduce your output
When a DEX shows an expected amount, it is displaying a snapshot based on the pool state and the route available at that moment. The final amount is determined only when the transaction executes on-chain. Between those events, the trade itself can move the pool, other transactions can change the reserves, the broader market can move, and searchers can exploit the transaction’s position in the ordering queue.

| Cause | What changes | Typical result | What can help |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price impact | Your order changes the pool’s reserves and therefore its exchange rate. | The quoted execution worsens as the order becomes large relative to available liquidity. | Use a deeper pool, reduce or split the trade, or choose another route. |
| Market movement during confirmation | The price moves after you submit but before the transaction is included. | The on-chain rate differs from the submission quote. | Use an appropriate tolerance and avoid unnecessary delay, while accepting that a tighter setting can cause failure. |
| Adverse transaction ordering (MEV) | Other transactions are placed before and after yours to profit from its expected price movement. | You receive a worse rate than ordinary market movement alone would produce. | Consider a private route or intent-based execution where available; these are risk-reduction approaches, not guarantees. |
Price impact: the trade moves the price
Uniswap’s official glossary defines price impact as “the difference between the mid-price and the execution price caused by your trade size relative to the pool’s liquidity.” In practical terms, the pool does not contain an unlimited amount at one fixed rate. The more of one asset you remove, the less favorable the reserve ratio becomes for the next unit.

How an AMM sets a rate
An automated market maker quotes from token balances and a pricing rule rather than from a central order book. Uniswap v2 documentation illustrates the constant-product model: if a pool has reserves represented by x and y, a swap must preserve the product x × y = k (subject to the protocol’s fee treatment). Taking more of token y requires adding token x, and the reserve ratio changes during the transaction. The marginal rate therefore gets worse as the trade consumes more of the available depth.
The v2 page is a description of that version’s model, not a complete description of every current Uniswap deployment; the documentation notes that v4 is current. For a broader conceptual overview, see How Uniswap Works and the version-specific explanation at Uniswap v2 Pricing.
Why pool depth matters more than headline volume
A pool’s reserves at the price you need determine execution depth. A pair can show substantial 24-hour volume yet have thin reserves near your chosen rate, especially after recent trades or during a volatile period. Conversely, a smaller-volume pool may provide a better rate for a particular order if it has more usable liquidity around that price. A volume number alone cannot tell you how much can be traded before the price moves materially.

Recognizing price impact in a quote
Many DEX interfaces display an estimated price impact alongside the route and minimum received amount. Treat that figure as a warning about the order’s effect on the pool, not as a prediction of where the market will be when the transaction confirms. Reducing the order size, splitting it into separate transactions, or selecting a route through deeper pools can lower this component, although splitting can introduce additional fees, delay and exposure to further market movement.

Slippage: the quote and execution occur at different times
Uniswap’s glossary defines slippage as “the total difference between the expected price at the time of submitting a transaction and the actual execution price.” That total can include your trade’s price impact, price changes caused by other traders, and any adverse ordering that occurs before inclusion.
A quote is not an on-chain reservation
When you approve and submit a swap, the transaction normally waits in a pending state before a block includes it. During that interval, another trade can alter the pool reserves or the external market can move. The interface may refresh its quote, but a submitted transaction is evaluated against the conditions encoded in its calldata and the slippage limit you selected.
What slippage tolerance actually does
Slippage tolerance establishes the worst execution the transaction is willing to accept. If the obtainable amount falls outside that range by the time the transaction executes, the swap can revert instead of completing. A lower tolerance rejects more adverse movement but raises the chance of failure; a higher tolerance makes execution more likely while allowing a larger shortfall. Neither setting makes the original quote certain.
Uniswap’s educational explanation uses a 10,000 USDC quote and a 6% tolerance as a hypothetical illustration. It is an example of how a bound works, not a measured average or a recommendation for every trade. The principles and examples are described in What is Slippage? and the v2 pricing documentation.

Price impact versus slippage
These terms are often used interchangeably, but the distinction matters when diagnosing a bad fill:
- Price impact is the portion caused by the size of your order changing the pool’s price relative to its mid-price.
- Slippage is the total difference between the submission expectation and final execution, so it can include price impact plus movement during the wait and ordering effects.
- A swap can have low price impact but still suffer slippage if the market moves sharply before inclusion.
- A large order can show significant price impact even when it confirms immediately.
MEV and sandwich trading: when ordering makes the fill worse
Ethereum’s transaction-ordering process creates opportunities for searchers to extract value from pending trades. Ethereum.org describes MEV as value associated with transaction inclusion and ordering. In a sandwich pattern, a searcher sees a large swap, places a purchase before it to push the pool price, lets the user’s transaction execute at that less favorable price, and then sells after the user’s trade moves the price again. Ethereum.org states: “Users who are sandwiched face increased slippage and worse execution on their trades.” See Maximal extractable value (MEV).
Why public visibility matters
A transaction visible in a public mempool can reveal its assets, size, route and tolerance before it is mined. Searchers do not need to change your transaction; they profit by arranging other transactions around it. A generous tolerance can make a trade more attractive to sandwich because the attacker has more room to worsen the execution while still satisfying your limit. A tight tolerance can reduce the exploitable range, but it may also cause the transaction to revert when ordinary market movement is enough to cross the bound.

If a major market move changes the pool before your transaction executes, that is intervening price movement. A sandwich is an intentional ordering strategy designed around your pending transaction. Both can appear as slippage in the final result, which is why the receipt alone may not identify the cause without examining surrounding transactions and the route.

A practical way to reduce unexpected losses
- Confirm the venue and route. Make sure you are using an Ethereum DEX swap and inspect which pools or intermediate tokens the quoted route uses. A route that looks short is not automatically the deepest.
- Check the pool’s usable liquidity. Look at the estimated price impact and compare the order size with the reserves available around the current price. Do not rely on a pair’s 24-hour volume as a substitute for depth.
- Decide whether the order is too large. For a high-impact trade, reduce the size, split execution, or seek a route with deeper liquidity. Account for the additional delay and transaction costs that splitting may create.
- Set a deliberate slippage tolerance. Choose a bound consistent with the asset’s volatility and the price impact already shown. Tighten it when protecting price is more important than guaranteed execution; widen it only when accepting a worse fill is preferable to a likely revert.
- Consider transaction privacy. If the wallet or interface offers private routing, it may reduce public-mempool exposure. Uniswap describes private routing in its wallet as an approach intended to reduce harmful MEV, not as an assurance that every swap will be protected.
- Evaluate intent-based execution when available. UniswapX lets fillers compete to execute intents. Uniswap presents that competition as a way that may improve execution or return value to users, but availability, route quality and outcomes vary; it is not a guaranteed price improvement.
- Review the result on-chain. After confirmation, compare the actual amounts in the transaction receipt with the submission quote and inspect neighboring transactions if the difference is unusually large. This helps distinguish a normal pool move from possible adverse ordering.
Uniswap’s discussion of these approaches is available at What Is Maximal Extractable Value (MEV)?. The described protections should be understood as intended risk reduction rather than elimination of MEV.
What to do when a swap fails or fills badly
The transaction reverted
A revert usually means the execution rate moved beyond your permitted bound before inclusion. Recheck the current quote and price impact, then decide whether to submit again with a smaller order, a deeper route or a tolerance that reflects the current volatility. Increasing tolerance without addressing a very large price impact can simply authorize a worse fill.
The swap succeeded near the limit
A successful transaction at or close to the slippage limit means the contract accepted the worst rate you allowed; it does not mean the original quote was preserved. Check whether the pool had a large price impact, whether the market moved during confirmation, and whether transactions immediately before and after yours suggest a sandwich.
The displayed price impact is unexpectedly high
Verify that you are not trading against a shallow pool, that the token pair and chain are correct, and that the route has not changed. A high-impact quote can be economically unfavorable even when the transaction would succeed. Reducing the order or finding greater depth is usually more effective than merely changing the tolerance.
Choosing between tighter limits, deeper liquidity and protected routing
| Approach | Primary control | Failure versus loss trade-off | Ordering exposure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tight slippage tolerance | Sets a narrow execution-price bound. | More reverts when the market moves; less room for an accepted adverse fill. | Does not by itself hide a pending transaction. |
| Deeper pool or alternate route | Changes the available liquidity and pricing path. | May lower price impact; route can carry different fees or token exposure. | Still visible unless the submission path is private. |
| Smaller or split orders | Reduces the amount consumed at once. | More transactions and time, creating additional opportunities for movement. | Each transaction may remain publicly observable. |
| Private routing | Changes who can see the pending transaction before inclusion. | Availability and execution depend on the provider; no universal guarantee. | Intended to reduce public-mempool exposure. |
| Intent-based competition | Lets competing fillers seek execution rather than simply broadcasting one public swap. | Results depend on participating fillers, route and conditions. | Designed to reduce some harmful ordering effects, not eliminate all MEV. |
Key terms to keep straight
- Mid-price: a reference rate between the pool’s token balances before your order.
- Execution price: the effective rate your swap receives after the pool’s pricing rule and trade size are applied.
- Price impact: the execution-rate difference caused by your own size relative to pool liquidity.
- Slippage: the total difference between the expected submission price and the actual execution price.
- Slippage tolerance: the maximum adverse difference the transaction is configured to accept before reverting.
- MEV: value associated with transaction inclusion and ordering, including strategies that arrange trades around yours.
Bottom line for Ethereum DEX traders
A worse-than-expected fill is not automatically a malfunction. First separate the trade’s own price impact from movement while the transaction waited, then consider whether ordering exposed it to a sandwich. Pool depth and route selection address the first problem; a carefully chosen tolerance addresses the failure-versus-worse-fill decision; private or intent-based routing may reduce some MEV exposure. None of these tools guarantees the quote, so the safest process is to inspect liquidity, size the order appropriately and treat every quote as time-sensitive.
