Betting scrutiny is a real part of Counter-Strike’s integrity and commercial environment, but the available evidence does not show it as the general reason esports organizations are leaving the game. The clearest stated reasons are financial pressure, difficulty funding competitive rosters, strategic changes and, in Evil Geniuses’ case, poor results and wider organizational problems. Treat betting scrutiny as context—not a proven cause of these departures.
Are teams leaving Counter-Strike because of betting rules?
Not on the evidence available. Counter-Strike has rules and investigations addressing betting integrity, but that does not establish why a particular organization exits. The documented cases point to different decisions and explanations:

These cases are not interchangeable: a roster exit, a temporary pause with a development project continuing, and a league suspension describe different changes. Nor does timing alone show that a rule or investigation caused a business decision.
What do Valve and tournament organizers restrict?
Valve’s guidance on players and inside information
Valve’s published Counter-Strike guidance warns professional players, teams and event production staff against gambling on matches, associating with high-volume CS:GO gamblers, or sharing information that could affect bets. Valve wrote: “Betting using inside information, or even the perception or suspicion thereof, carries a significant risk of damaging your personal brand, your team, your community, and may lead to exclusion from future Valve-sponsored events.” This is language from Valve’s CS:GO-era post, not a newly introduced 2026 rule.
ESL’s event and sponsor rules
ESL’s 2026 Counter-Strike rulebook restricts sponsors or partners considered harmful to ESL’s reputation and disallows some entities that interact with Valve game inventories. It also requires alternative branding if applicable law, regulation or platform rules prohibit a team’s gambling-related branding at an event. The rulebook specifies consequences for participant withdrawals as well. These are tournament-level constraints; they do not, by themselves, demonstrate that the rules prompted a particular team to leave.

What the ATOX investigation and betting alerts show—and what they don’t
ESIC’s investigation timeline
The Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) says allegations involving ATOX arose in late 2024 around an ESL Pro League Season 20 match against Team Falcons. ESIC circulated a Suspicious Betting Alert Network notice, received additional betting-related statistical data on 9 January 2025, investigated and issued sanctions on 15 April 2025. That timeline establishes an integrity investigation and sanctions involving participants; it is not evidence that an entire organization’s exit was caused by betting scrutiny.
IBIA’s esports figure is not a Counter-Strike match-fixing count
The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) reported 70 suspicious betting alerts across 10 sports in Q1 2026. Fifteen were esports alerts—22% of the total. IBIA classifies those esports alerts as global because events can be transnational. They are alerts, not proof of manipulation, not specific to Counter-Strike, and not a measure of teams leaving the game.

Why did organizations step back from Counter-Strike?
Complexity: insufficient revenue to support a tier-one roster
Complexity announced its exit in August 2025. CEO Jason Lake identified shrinking revenue, a difficult esports economy and scarce North American sponsorship opportunities as reasons the organization could no longer properly support a tier-one team. As quoted by HLTV from a video posted by Complexity, he said: “After a really strong ’23 and ’24, 2025 in the esports economy has been really challenging for us, and quite simply we have not been able to drive enough revenue to afford to properly support a tier-one team.”
Lake also said: “We have tried everything and turned over every rock, searched for investment and revenue, but it’s just been an incredibly difficult time economically and with shrinking revenues this year, it kind of forced our hand.” His explanation points directly to financing the roster, not to betting rules or an integrity inquiry.

ALTERNATE aTTaX: a professional-roster pause and strategic shift
In October 2024, ALTERNATE aTTaX said it would not field a professional CS2 team in 2025 for the time being and would focus on developing its Evo project. It cited a tense economic situation, the state of the CS2 ecosystem and strategic realignment. Project Director Lennart Kreuter said: “Our decision may initially seem like a setback, but it opens up the opportunity for us to explore new avenues and redefine our commitment to Counter-Strike.” The announcement described a pause in the professional roster, not an end to every Counter-Strike activity.
Evil Geniuses: reported competitive and organizational problems
Evil Geniuses announced its exit in January 2024. HLTV’s report describes poor competitive results from 2021 onward, roster changes, organizational challenges and broader contraction across the organization. That is the report’s analysis; it is not a direct official explanation, and it does not identify betting scrutiny as the reason.

ESL Impact: a league’s economic model, not a team departure
ESL Impact said it would suspend operations after its eighth season in November 2025. Its announcement, reproduced by PC Gamer, said: “While ESL Impact has succeeded in its mission to raise the profile of women’s Counter-Strike, despite significant investment, the current economic model is simply not sustainable.” This is evidence of economic pressure elsewhere in the Counter-Strike ecosystem, but a league suspension is not an esports organization leaving the game.

No. Betting partnerships remained part of Counter-Strike’s commercial landscape in 2025: HEROIC announced Razed as a CS2 sponsor in August and described jersey branding and digital activations. That example shows that scrutiny and sponsorship can coexist. It does not establish that the economics are healthy, or that every betting partner or form of branding is acceptable under every jurisdiction’s laws and every event’s rules.

What can be concluded about betting and team departures?
Counter-Strike has documented integrity risks, rules addressing betting-related conduct and at least one investigated case that resulted in sanctions. Separately, the cited departures and pauses have documented financial, strategic, competitive or organizational explanations. The available evidence does not establish that betting-sponsor restrictions or integrity scrutiny directly caused any of these organizations to leave.
