Why Enfold’s Baby Health App Is Open Source—and What Its Licenses Exclude

Enfold’s founders say they published the app’s code so parents can inspect its privacy approach and clinicians can examine its sourced health information. But “open source” does not mean every part of Enfold is available for unrestricted reuse: the project describes separate terms for its software, learning cards and branding, plus an additional rebranding condition for app-store forks. The details below reflect the project owner’s account in a September 21, 2026 DEV Community article, not an independent repository audit or legal opinion.

Why the founders made Enfold’s code public

Raul, a software developer, and his wife Oana, a neonatologist, say they started Enfold after becoming parents and wanting a baby app that worked quietly at night and was practical to use one-handed. They say the apps they found did not meet their preferences: they wanted no ads, streaks or subscription barrier before safety information. They built Enfold and published its source code.

Their stated reasons for making the code public connect to two concerns: whether a child’s health-related data is handled as described, and whether health information in the app can be examined alongside its sources.

Privacy claims the code is meant to make inspectable

Raul’s article says Enfold includes no advertising, analytics or tracking SDKs. It says that, without an account, data stays on the phone; account-based syncing uses HTTPS to a small FastAPI backend that users can run themselves. Raul frames the concern this way: “A baby tracker holds health data about a child.”

These are the author’s descriptions, not findings from an independent inspection of the app manifests, sync code or live network traffic. Publishing source can give technically capable people material to examine, but the article alone does not establish what a particular released build or server does.

Health cards and source transparency

The article says each learning card is a JSON file with a source list, and that a test prevents cards without sources from shipping. Raul also says an Apple review under guideline 1.4.1 prompted the team to improve how the product cited information. The article does not include the review record or demonstrate the test, so these remain the author’s account of the project’s process.

What the project says each license covers

Raul describes different treatment for the app’s software, educational cards and brand assets. The distinctions matter: the article does not say that all Enfold material is covered by AGPL.

Material Terms described by Raul Reuse described in the article
Application code AGPL-3.0-or-later Software modification and hosting, subject to the reported copyleft terms.
Learning cards CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 Card reuse is subject to the license’s stated noncommercial and no-derivatives terms; the author suggests coordinating translations with the project and a clinician.
Name, logo, icons and two illustrations Not licensed, according to the article The author says these brand assets may not be reused under the code license; the illustrations are intended to be replaced with original art.

Code: AGPL-3.0-or-later

Raul characterizes the code license as copyleft and says its network clause means a hosted fork must publish its changes. That is the project owner’s summary, not legal advice about a particular deployment. The article’s account does not establish how the license applies to any specific use.

Learning cards: CC BY-NC-ND 4.0

The cards have a separate reported license from the software. Raul’s explanation is that medical guidance should be attributed rather than remixed. He suggests anyone interested in translating cards coordinate with the project and a clinician; the article does not present translation as a blanket permission to alter or redistribute the cards.

Brand assets: not licensed

The article says Enfold’s name, logo, icons and two illustrations are reserved rather than licensed for reuse. Raul says the illustrations are intended to be replaced with original art, but that intention does not itself grant permission to reuse them.

The extra condition Raul reports for app-store forks

In addition to describing AGPL-3.0-or-later for code, Raul says a short addition in LICENSE-NOTES requires an app-store fork to change its name and replace the brand and illustrations first. He says the aim is to prevent parents from mistaking a fork for Enfold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a project-specific added condition as the author describes it. Its interaction with the underlying license has not been independently analyzed here, so the article should not be read as a conclusion about enforceability. A definitive assessment would require reviewing the actual license files and applicable law.

Contributions and the technical context

Raul says contributors sign commits under a Developer Certificate of Origin (DCO), with no Contributor License Agreement (CLA), and retain copyright. He reports a mobile app built with Flutter, Riverpod, go_router and Drift/SQLite, using offline-first storage and a schema identified as v14. The sync backend is described as FastAPI, Postgres and Redis, with magic-code sign-in, partner invites and push notifications; the article also mentions Caddy, Docker Compose, GitHub Actions and Dependabot.

These details help explain what the author means by a backend users can run, but they do not independently verify that self-hosting is straightforward, or establish the status of a particular version.

Which project details are time-sensitive

The September 21, 2026 article reports 208 tests, an author-reported count rather than an independently checked test run. At publication, Raul said per-card physician sign-off was in progress and unsigned cards were marked “Pending physician review”; the app was English-only with Romanian planned next; the interface handled one child per device although the server supported more; and Google Play was still reviewing the app while an App Store version was live. He also said the app was free and would remain free. These are publication-time statements, not confirmation of current availability, review status, language support or clinical sign-off.

What to check before reusing Enfold material

  • Identify whether the material is code, a learning card or a brand asset; the article assigns them different terms.
  • For code use, consult the actual AGPL-3.0-or-later license files rather than relying only on the article’s shorthand explanation.
  • For learning cards, consult the actual CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 terms and do not assume that the software license governs them.
  • For app-store distribution, review the reported LICENSE-NOTES condition alongside the license files and obtain qualified legal advice if the terms affect a release decision.
  • Do not treat the author’s privacy or clinical-content descriptions as a security audit, clinical validation or independent review of a current app release.
