Why Employers Must Treat AI Skills as Part of Talent Retention

Employers should treat practical AI capability as part of the employee experience: provide useful tools and training, involve workers in identifying where AI can help, set clear data rules and measure whether changes improve work. That is the central message from Catherine Doyle, general manager of Microsoft Ireland, in an Irish Examiner interview published on 2 October 2026. The figures she discussed suggest strong interest alongside a support gap, but they do not show that AI access alone causes employees to stay or leave.

What Irish workers say about AI and their careers

Doyle discussed findings attributed to Microsoft Ireland’s 2026 Work Trend Index. As reported in the interview, 47% of Irish workers say AI is making them reconsider their career path, while 65% believe AI skills are essential to compete. Around one in eight say they would consider changing employer specifically to get access to better AI tools.

Those figures describe reported views, not observed job moves or proof that better tools cause people to change jobs. They do, however, point to a talent risk employers can address: workers may see access to modern tools and the chance to develop relevant skills as part of a worthwhile job.

The interview does not provide the survey’s sample size, field dates, methodology or margin of error. The percentages should therefore be read as figures attributed to the Work Trend Index in this interview, not as a precise forecast for every Irish workplace.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Adoption is ahead of training and guidance

The interview reports that 63% of workers in Ireland use AI at work, and 48% already use AI agents regularly or occasionally. Yet only 40% say they have received enough AI training or guidance. That contrast matters: access or informal experimentation is not the same as knowing how to use AI effectively, safely and in ways that improve a job.

Workers also appear to have ideas about where the technology could fit. In the figures Doyle cited, 57% can point to places where AI agents could help in their role. That makes employees potential partners in adoption, not simply recipients of a tool selected by management.

How employers can turn interest into practical capability

Doyle’s advice is to begin with the business outcome, not the technology. Employers can use the following sequence to make that principle concrete:

  1. Choose a real problem. Identify a specific workflow or business outcome that could improve, rather than introducing AI simply because it is available.
  2. Define what better means. Agree on the intended improvement before implementation so the organisation can distinguish useful progress from activity or novelty.
  3. Ask employees where work gets stuck. Workers understand the friction in their daily tasks and may be able to identify where an AI agent or another AI tool could help. The interview reports that 57% can already identify possible areas in their role.
  4. Provide tools, training and clear expectations. Explain what workers are expected to learn or do, and give them support that matches the task rather than leaving them to experiment without guidance.
  5. Set data rules. Tell staff what information may and may not be entered into AI tools. The interview says only around half of Irish workers report having clear organisational rules on this point.
  6. Measure the result. Check whether the change delivered the improvement defined at the outset, and use that evidence to decide whether to adjust, expand or stop the approach.

This is an organisational approach, not a recommendation for any particular AI platform. Doyle’s advice treats adoption as a combination of people, processes and technology: changing a workflow around a useful outcome may matter more than simply adding another tool.

Why AI belongs in the retention conversation

AI skills are increasingly viewed by workers as relevant to their future, while some say they would consider moving for better tools. Employers can respond by making development and responsible access visible parts of the job: give people a chance to build capability, explain how AI fits their work and involve them in identifying worthwhile uses.

That should not be mistaken for a guarantee of retention. The reported willingness to consider a move is not evidence that a particular AI investment will prevent turnover. Pay, management, workload, career opportunities and other parts of the employee experience remain outside the figures presented in the interview.

Workload and wellbeing are potential benefits, not proven outcomes

The interview also cites 44% reporting burnout and says more than a third struggle to maintain the right work-life balance. Doyle presents AI as a possible way to support workload and make more room for higher-value work. The figures do not establish that AI has reduced burnout or improved work-life balance; employers would need to assess those outcomes rather than assume them.

For any AI initiative, that means checking not only whether a task is completed differently, but also what happens to employees’ workload and working conditions. Efficiency that merely shifts work elsewhere would not, by itself, demonstrate a better employee experience.

What the interview establishes—and what it does not

Doyle’s central point is that employers should make practical AI capability part of how they develop and support people. The interview provides a snapshot of reported Irish worker attitudes and adoption, alongside recommendations for employers. It does not compare AI vendors, evaluate a specific programme, or establish causal effects on retention, productivity or wellbeing.

As Doyle put it: “For employers, the advice is to start with the business outcome, not the technology.”
