Why Earth’s Geographic Poles Move—and How Far They’ve Wandered

Earth’s geographic poles do move: the planet’s rotational axis shifts slightly relative to its crust. NASA reported that by 2023 the spin axis was about 30 feet (10 meters) from its position in 1900. This is a gradual wobble—not a sudden shift of continents, and not the movement of Earth’s magnetic poles.

What does it mean for Earth’s geographic poles to move?

The geographic poles are where Earth’s rotational axis meets the surface. Because the axis moves relative to the crust, those intersection points shift too. Scientists call this motion polar motion. It is a small, ongoing change in Earth’s orientation, not the planet tipping over or its surface sliding by the same distance.

NASA’s 2024 account puts the spin axis about 30 feet (10 meters) from its 1900 position by 2023. That figure compares the axis position at two dates; it does not mean the pole followed a straight path or that every location on Earth moved 10 meters.

Why do Earth’s poles move?

Earth’s rotation responds to how mass is distributed across the planet. When water or ice shifts location, it changes the planet’s wobble and the position of its rotational axis. Processes inside the solid Earth also contribute.

Water and ice at the surface

Ice sheets and glaciers lose mass when melting outpaces snowfall, while aquifers lose groundwater when extraction and discharge exceed replenishment. Changes in sea level also redistribute mass. NASA’s 2024 summary says researchers analyzed a 120-year record and found that changes in groundwater, ice sheets, glaciers and sea level could explain about 90% of recurring polar-motion oscillations from 1900 to 2018.

That 90% applies to recurring fluctuations in that period—not to all pole movement, and not to the share caused by people. NASA says the mass variations behind the 20th-century patterns mostly reflected natural climate cycles. Human-caused changes can also affect Earth’s surface mass, but the statistic does not assign a 90% human contribution.

Processes inside Earth

Earth’s interior adds another component. In the same 2024 account, NASA says most of the remaining share of the recurring fluctuations was associated with interior dynamics, including inner-core tilt. A separate analysis of the long-term, non-repeating drift found that nearly all of that drift was due to mantle dynamics. These findings concern different components of polar motion and should not be combined into a single cause.

Recurring wobble and long-term drift are different

Polar motion includes fluctuations that recur as well as a longer-term drift. The 90% result describes recurring oscillations over 1900–2018; it is not an explanation for the entire path of the axis since 1900. NASA’s 2024 reporting attributes nearly all of the long-term, non-repeating drift in the study to mantle dynamics.

Earlier work has examined particular patterns without replacing that broader distinction. A 2016 NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory summary described an eastward turn around 2000 and linked it partly to water loss in Eurasia, including the Indian subcontinent and Caspian Sea region, alongside changes in ice mass. It also discussed an east-west wobble recurring every 6 to 14 years, with an amplitude of about 20 to 60 inches (0.5 to 1.5 meters), and a proposed connection to land-water storage. Those are findings from an earlier study, not another estimate of the 2024 result.

How do scientists track such a small movement?

Early records used the apparent movement of stars to track changes in Earth’s orientation. Later techniques include very-long-baseline interferometry, which analyzes radio signals from quasars, and satellite laser ranging. In a 2021 Journal of Geodesy study, researchers also used gravity-field data from the GRACE satellites to estimate changes caused by surface mass and distinguish them from the longer-term glacial-isostatic-adjustment trend.

That paper estimated a glacial-isostatic-adjustment-related trend of 2.18 milliarcseconds per year, equivalent in the paper’s conversion to 6.74 centimeters per year toward 61.77° W. These are study-specific estimates from a model that separates contributions; they are not a rate that can simply be applied to the 30-foot displacement NASA reports for 1900–2023.

Does polar motion affect daily life?

The movement is too small to notice in ordinary life, but precision systems need to account for it. Global navigation satellite systems, Earth-observing satellites and ground observatories rely on accurate knowledge of Earth’s orientation. The wobble is a measurement signal and a consequence of mass redistribution; it is not what causes ice loss or groundwater depletion.

Mass redistribution can also affect the length of the day, which is a separate measurement from pole displacement. NASA’s 2024 summary reports that ice and groundwater movement lengthened days by 1.33 milliseconds per century over the 2000–2018 period. That figure describes the rate of Earth’s rotation, not how far a pole moved.

Is this the same as the magnetic poles moving?

No. Geographic poles are defined by Earth’s rotational axis; magnetic poles are defined by the planet’s magnetic field. The magnetic poles have their own motion and can travel over much larger distances at the surface. A shift in the geographic pole’s position is not evidence that Earth’s magnetic field is about to reverse.

Nor should polar motion be confused with true polar wander in geology, which refers to a much slower, solid-body reorientation of Earth over geological timescales. The 30-foot comparison describes the position of the rotational axis relative to the crust between 1900 and 2023, not that kind of planetary reorientation.
