Why DualSense Edge Stick Modules Are Hard to Find—and Whether Left and Right Modules Are Interchangeable

Yes, the left and right DualSense Edge stick modules are interchangeable. Sony’s official replacement instructions say either module can be attached to either side. The replacement part is designed only for the DualSense Edge wireless controller, not the standard DualSense or a universal gamepad.

Availability is the uncertain part. Stockout reports exist, including a US PlayStation Direct listing recorded as out of stock on February 6, 2025, but there is no published Sony explanation for the reports and no evidence that modules are unavailable everywhere or that production stopped.

What the DualSense Edge stick module is

The DualSense Edge uses removable stick modules rather than permanently integrating every stick mechanism into the controller shell. A complete module contains the analog-stick mechanism and its electrical connector; it slides into a dedicated bay inside the Edge and is secured by a release lever.

Sony sells the part separately as the Stick Module for DualSense Edge Wireless Controller. Sony’s UK accessory listing identifies the module as model CFI-ZSM1 and includes one module with a standard stick cap and a user manual. The product is intended as a replacement when an Edge module fails or develops a fault, not as a general-purpose joystick assembly.

Are the left and right modules interchangeable?

Yes. Sony’s official DualSense Edge replacement instructions state: “Left and right stick modules are interchangeable and can be attached to either side.” That means a replacement module does not need to be labeled specifically for the left or right position. You can install the same module design in either bay.

Interchangeability describes the two positions on a DualSense Edge; it does not expand compatibility to other controllers. A module removed from the left side can be installed on the right side of another compatible Edge only if the physical and electrical fit is correct, but Sony’s documented product compatibility is for the DualSense Edge wireless controller.

What interchangeability does not mean

  • It is not a left/right pair that must be purchased together.
  • It is not compatible with the regular DualSense wireless controller simply because both controllers are made for PlayStation 5.
  • It is not a universal replacement for third-party controllers or unrelated analog-stick assemblies.
  • It does not prove that every third-party module will fit, communicate correctly, or be supported by Sony.

Why people say the modules are hard to find

The most accurate answer is that some buyers have encountered stockouts, while the cause and overall scale of the problem remain unestablished. Community posts use phrases such as “Stick Module always out stock,” “Where are the Dualsense Edge stick modules?” and “Why is it so hard to find the stick modules?” Those phrases describe genuine buyer frustration, but they are not inventory statistics.

A stock-history tracker recorded a US PlayStation Direct listing as out of stock on February 6, 2025. That is evidence of a dated stock event in one market, not proof of a continuing worldwide shortage. A user-submitted iFixit question also records difficulty locating a module, but it does not establish how many retailers were out of stock or why.

Sony has not published, in the material available for this explanation, a reason for reported stockouts. There is no supported basis for saying that Sony stopped production, that scalpers caused the problem, or that modules are unavailable in every country. Inventory can differ by region, retailer, shipment, and date.

Historical distribution context

Sony’s October 2022 launch announcement said replacement modules would be sold through PlayStation Direct in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg from January 26, 2023. Participating retailers were scheduled to follow on February 23, 2023. Those dates explain the original sales channels; they are not a current stock list or a promise that every retailer still carries the part.

A UK Sony listing showed £19.99 when it was crawled approximately three weeks before the source review. That figure is a dated UK listing price, not a guaranteed current price, a global price, or evidence that a module is in stock now.

How to check availability without being misled

Because inventory changes quickly, check the market in which you will actually buy. Use the official PlayStation Direct storefront for that country first, then established local game retailers that Sony identifies as participating channels. Record the date and time of each check.

  1. Confirm the country storefront. A US listing cannot establish UK, European, or other regional stock.
  2. Search the exact product name and model. Look for “Stick Module for DualSense Edge Wireless Controller” and model CFI-ZSM1. Avoid results that only say “PS5 joystick” or “DualSense replacement.”
  3. Check the seller and condition. Distinguish Sony or an established retailer from a third-party marketplace seller. Verify whether the item is new, used, open-box, or a pre-order.
  4. Check the total price. Include shipping, taxes, import charges, and any marketplace fees. A high resale price does not establish an official shortage.
  5. Verify the listing immediately before paying. A search result or cached page can remain visible after inventory has sold out.

No reliable restock date is established here. Treat any seller’s future availability estimate as that seller’s estimate, not a Sony guarantee.

How to replace a DualSense Edge stick module

Sony documents replacing the complete module rather than repairing individual internal components. Follow the current instructions supplied with the controller or replacement, because hardware handling carries a risk of connector or static damage.

  1. Turn the controller off. Confirm that the player indicator is not lit.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable. Do not remove the module while the controller is connected.
  3. Discharge static electricity. Touch an appropriate grounded metal object before handling the module, and avoid working on a surface that can build static.
  4. Remove the front cover. Turn the controller over and use the rear RELEASE latch as shown in Sony’s instructions. Lift the cover away without forcing it.
  5. Raise the module release lever. The lever unlocks the module from its bay.
  6. Slide out the old module. Pull it along the grooves. Do not twist it or pull on the electrical connector.
  7. Inspect the replacement. Make sure the module is the Edge-specific part and that its connector and guide rails are clean and undamaged. Do not touch the connectors with your fingers.
  8. Install the replacement. Align the module with the grooves and slide it in until it clicks into place.
  9. Lower the release lever. The lever must be fully down so the module is secured.
  10. Refit the front cover. Press it into position evenly, then reconnect the cable and test the controller.

If the module will not slide smoothly, stop. Misalignment, debris, a damaged guide rail, or an incompletely raised lever can cause resistance. Forcing the part can damage the bay or connector.

Compatibility: the comparisons that matter

Part or source What is established What is not established
Sony Stick Module, model CFI-ZSM1 Designed for the DualSense Edge; one module with a standard cap is listed on Sony’s UK page. Current stock or current price in any particular country.
Left versus right Edge position Sony says the modules are interchangeable and can attach to either side. That a module fits controllers other than the DualSense Edge.
Regular DualSense stick assembly It is a different controller design and is not identified by Sony as compatible with the Edge module. That parts can be swapped between the two controller families.
Third-party marketplace listing May offer a new, used, or aftermarket item. Authenticity, electrical compatibility, warranty coverage, or Sony support unless independently verified.

The safest buying decision is therefore based on controller model, not on a generic description such as “PS5 analog stick.” The Edge module’s removable format is a specific hardware feature.

Symptoms that call for a module swap

A replacement module is relevant when one stick develops persistent drift, fails to register movement, loses calibration, or otherwise stops working while the rest of the controller functions normally. Those symptoms do not by themselves prove that the removable module is the cause; cable, firmware, contamination, or controller-side faults can produce similar behavior.

Before buying, confirm that the problem follows the module when practical, test the other stick, restart and update the controller using Sony’s supported procedures, and check whether the issue is present in more than one game. If the fault remains after a correctly installed replacement, the controller bay or another circuit may need service rather than another module.

What the evidence does—and does not—show about a shortage

  • Established: buyers have reported difficulty finding modules, and at least one US listing was recorded out of stock on February 6, 2025.
  • Established: Sony announced specific PlayStation Direct and participating-retailer channels for the launch period.
  • Not established: a worldwide or permanent shortage.
  • Not established: the number of units Sony produces, the frequency of stockouts across regions, or a Sony decision to discontinue the part.
  • Not established: that scalpers, manufacturing limits, or a particular retailer caused the reports.

Those limits matter when evaluating search results. One out-of-stock page, a forum discussion, or a high resale listing can show that a buyer had trouble on a particular date; it cannot answer how supply is distributed globally.

Practical decision guide

If your Edge module has failed

Look for the Sony Edge-specific replacement, confirm model CFI-ZSM1 where the listing provides a model number, and follow the replacement procedure. Because left and right modules are interchangeable, choose an available genuine module rather than waiting for a side-specific version.

If only a generic “PS5 joystick” is available

Do not assume it fits. The regular DualSense and DualSense Edge are different products, and Sony limits the documented replacement module to the Edge. Ask the seller for an explicit Edge compatibility statement, model information, condition, and return policy.

If every local listing is unavailable

Check the official regional storefront and participating retailers on different dates, then compare seller identity and total cost. Keep the market and check date with your notes. Avoid treating an unverified restock promise or an inflated resale price as proof of a permanent shortage.

Bottom line

DualSense Edge stick modules are hard to find for some buyers because stockouts have occurred, but the available evidence does not establish a global, ongoing shortage or its cause. The hardware question is clearer: Sony’s module is replaceable, the left and right positions use interchangeable modules, and the documented replacement part is for the DualSense Edge only. Confirm the regional listing, seller, model CFI-ZSM1, condition, and date before purchasing.
