What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
YouTube Music can display different images for what appears to be the same song because it may be showing different catalog items. One version can be an automatically generated Art Track using release artwork; another can be a matched music, lyric, or live video that uses the same audio but has its own thumbnail. Separate editions, country or app differences, and personal uploads create additional possibilities.
Artwork alone does not prove that the recording is different. Compare the release, track metadata, content type, and source before deciding whether anything is wrong.

What YouTube Music is actually displaying
The phrase “same song” can refer to several objects in YouTube’s catalog. A recording may be delivered through an album, a single, a compilation, a reissue, or another release. It may also appear as an Art Track or as a video that has been matched to the recording.

YouTube Help defines an Art Track as “an automatically generated YouTube version of a track on a music album.” It consists of the sound recording and the album art. The image is therefore part of the release data attached to that catalog item, not merely a decoration selected by the player.

YouTube’s explanation of its DDEX feed describes recordings and artwork as resources connected to release metadata. If the same recording is delivered in more than one release, each release can carry its own title, credits, track list, edition information, and associated artwork. A single may use a different cover from the album that contains the same master recording; a compilation or reissue may use another image again.
A matched video can replace the Art Track
Distributor guidance from DistroKid says YouTube Music may replace an Art Track with a video that uses the same audio. The replacement can be an official music video, lyric video, live performance, or another eligible upload. Its thumbnail or opening image is controlled by the video, so it may not resemble the album cover at all.
This is why two entries with the same song title can show different imagery while playing substantially the same recording. One entry is a catalog Art Track; the other is a video presentation associated with that recording.

The presentation can vary by context
CD Baby’s help guidance, updated December 1, 2025, says the video that replaces an Art Track can vary by listener country and by device or app. That is distributor guidance rather than a published specification of YouTube’s internal selection algorithm. It explains why two people, or the same person using different surfaces, may not see identical artwork.
YouTube has not published a complete rule that predicts which image will appear for every recording. Treat release identity, content type, and playback context as supported explanations, not as a definitive diagnosis of every discrepancy.
The main causes of different album art
| Possible cause | What you will notice | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| Different release or edition | The song appears under different albums, singles, compilations, or reissues, each with its own cover. | Open each release page and compare release name, edition, track list, credits, and other metadata. |
| Art Track versus matched video | One item looks like an album track; another is labeled or presented as a music, lyric, or live video. | Inspect the playback screen, title, channel/source, and whether video controls are shown. |
| Country, app, or device context | The image changes between YouTube Music, YouTube, desktop, mobile, or different regions. | Compare surfaces only as a diagnostic clue. A change does not reveal the undisclosed selection rule. |
| Personal local upload | An uploaded file has missing, unexpected, or multiple images that do not match the streamed catalog. | Inspect the file’s embedded artwork and the number of image resources in the file. |
| Incorrect delivered metadata | A streamed release consistently carries the wrong cover or belongs to the wrong release context. | Report the catalog problem to the artist, label, distributor, or YouTube through the available reporting route. |
How to tell which version you are seeing
1. Confirm the release, not just the song title
Open the album or release page from which the track was selected. Check the release name, year or edition wording when shown, the surrounding tracks, artist credits, and track order. Identical titles do not establish that two entries are the same catalog item. A track on a deluxe edition can use different release artwork from the standard edition even when the audio is unchanged.

2. Identify the content type
Look at the item currently playing. An Art Track normally presents the recording with the release image. A matched video presents a video source and may use a thumbnail, performance still, lyric graphic, or other visual. Compare the title and source shown on the playback page, rather than relying on the image alone.

3. Compare the source and credits
Check the channel or source attached to the item, the displayed artist and album fields, and any version wording such as live, radio edit, remix, or instrumental. These details can reveal that two similarly named entries are different deliveries, or that one is a video linked to the recording.
4. Use other surfaces only as evidence
Opening the same item in the YouTube Music app, the YouTube app, and a desktop browser can show whether the presentation changes with context. Distributor guidance reports that replacement videos may vary by country, app, or device, but switching surfaces is not a guaranteed fix and does not expose the internal matching logic.

A listener troubleshooting sequence
- Start from the release page. Navigate to the album or single and verify that the track is listed under the expected release and edition. Do not begin with a search result that may combine several catalog entries.
- Check whether playback is an Art Track or a video. Inspect the title, source, and video interface. If a music, lyric, or live video is playing, its imagery can differ from the release cover even when the audio matches.
- Compare the item across apps or devices. Record which image appears in each context and, if relevant, whether the listener is in a different country. Use this comparison to describe the problem; do not assume that reinstalling an app or changing a setting will force a particular cover.
- Separate streamed catalog content from a personal upload. If the file was uploaded from your own device, it is not using YouTube’s delivered release artwork. Inspect the local file’s embedded images and remove unintended duplicates only if you understand that you are changing the source file.
- Escalate a genuine catalog error. For a streamed release with incorrect or mismatched art, use YouTube’s feedback or reporting route and contact the artist, label, or distributor. Include the release name, track title, displayed image, URL or internal item details available to you, country, app, and device so the rights holder can identify the delivery.
What artists, labels, and distributors can do
Review the release in YouTube Studio
YouTube Music’s “Manage releases and update your discography” guidance says Official Artist Channel owners can inspect public releases in YouTube Studio’s Releases tab on desktop. The tab can show release titles, track count, artist credits, album art, and track metadata. Eligible channel owners can request removal of an incorrect release or ask for a missing release to be added to the channel discography.
This workflow controls how releases are represented in an artist’s discography. It is not a listener-side artwork picker and does not promise that a user can select which matched video YouTube Music displays.
Correct the delivered metadata
YouTube’s partner guidance for incorrect track, album, or artist information describes two routes: deliver a corrected version of the metadata, or request an Art Track takedown and then redeliver it. If one track in an album is updated, the corrected delivery must include metadata for every track in that album, including tracks that did not change. That requirement helps keep the release internally consistent.
The exact submission path depends on the partner or distributor delivering the release. A listener generally cannot repair catalog artwork by editing an online copy of the track; the correction has to reach YouTube through the rights-holder or distribution workflow.
Check more than the image
Before requesting a takedown, compare the recording, release identity, artist credits, and track metadata. A different cover may be legitimate when the recording appears on another release or when a matched video is being shown. Removing a valid release can create a larger discography problem than the original visual difference.
Personal uploads are a separate artwork problem
Files added from a listener’s own library can contain embedded cover images. A 2022 YouTube Music Community answer from a Product Expert suggested checking the file’s embedded artwork and whether it contains multiple images when album art is missing or unexpected. Community guidance can be outdated or unverified, so treat it as a troubleshooting lead rather than official policy.

This advice applies only to the local source file. Editing an MP3 or other file’s tags will not change artwork for a streamed YouTube Music catalog release. For local files, make a backup, inspect the embedded picture resources with software that understands the file format, and remove unintended images only when you are comfortable altering the file that YouTube Music reads.
What a different cover does not prove
- It does not automatically mean the audio is different. Verify the release, version wording, credits, and playback source before concluding that you are hearing another master.
- It is not established as a subscription-tier rule. The documented explanations concern catalog objects, matched videos, and context; they do not establish that a paid or free plan chooses different covers.
- It is not necessarily a cache or settings bug. No source here proves that clearing an app cache, changing a setting, or reinstalling will restore a particular image.
- There is no documented listener control to force an Art Track. YouTube and distributor guidance describe replacement behavior but do not document a control that lets listeners switch a matched video back to the Art Track.
- It does not establish one universal artwork algorithm. YouTube has not published a complete selection formula for every recording, country, app, and device.
When to report the discrepancy
Report it when the wrong artwork is attached to a streamed release, the track appears under an incorrect artist or album, a release is missing from an Official Artist Channel, or the displayed content clearly conflicts with the delivered metadata. Provide precise identifying information and explain whether the problem occurs on an Art Track, a matched video, or a personal upload.
If the difference is simply an album cover versus a video thumbnail, it may be expected behavior rather than a catalog defect. Documenting the context lets the rights holder distinguish a legitimate alternate presentation from metadata that needs correction.
