The practical consequence is deliberate in the product’s physical layout: when a cable is connected, the mouse cannot be used normally on a desk.
Apple documents the port location and the charging limitation, but its support and product materials do not give a confirmed reason for choosing the bottom. Explanations about preserving the mouse’s shape, saving internal space or forcing a second mouse are theories, not established Apple design rationale.

What “charging from the bottom” means
On the Magic Mouse, the charging connector is on the flat underside, beneath the text and regulatory markings. A cable plugged into that port points downward into the desk area rather than toward the rear or side of the mouse.
That arrangement matters because the underside is also the surface that contacts the desk. Apple Support states plainly that “Magic Mouse is unavailable for use while charging.” The statement applies to the mouse’s normal operation: connecting a cable means you must stop moving it across the desk until charging is finished or the cable is removed.
#1 Best Overall
- Magic Mouse is wireless and rechargeable, with an optimised foot design that lets it glide smoothly across your desk.
- The Multi-Touch surface allows you to perform simple gestures such as swiping between web pages and scrolling through documents.
- The rechargeable battery will power your Magic Mouse for about a month or more between charges.
- It’s ready to go straight out of the box and pairs automatically with your Mac, and it includes a woven USB-C Charge Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.
The limitation is specific to Magic Mouse. In the same support guidance, Apple contrasts it with Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad, which can be used while their batteries charge. The location of the connector therefore creates a practical interruption for the mouse, not merely an unusual-looking cable position.
What Apple has—and has not—explained about the design
Verified physical facts
- The charging port is on the underside of the mouse.
- The current Magic Mouse uses USB-C; an earlier Magic Mouse 2 uses Lightning.
- A cable connected to the bottom prevents normal use while the mouse charges.
- Apple’s current product page estimates battery life at “about a month or more” between charges.
These are documented product facts. They explain the visible design and its consequence without requiring a theory about Apple’s industrial-design priorities.
The underlying reason remains unconfirmed
Apple’s reviewed support article, product page and Magic Mouse 2 guide show where the connector is and how to use it, but they do not attribute the placement to a named designer or provide an official design explanation. There is no verified Apple statement in those materials saying that the port was moved underneath to preserve a cleaner silhouette, fit a particular internal component layout, save space or make users purchase another pointing device.

Those ideas may appear in discussions of the mouse, but they should be treated as conjecture unless a reliable, attributable source establishes a specific motive. The defensible answer is narrower: Apple put the connector on the bottom, and that location makes the mouse unavailable while charging. The reason Apple selected that location is not explained in the cited documentation.
Which Magic Mouse do you have?
Cable compatibility depends on the generation. The current product is sold as Magic Mouse (USB-C), while the earlier Magic Mouse 2 guide documents a Lightning connector. The ports look different and the cables are not interchangeable at the plug.

Look at the socket before buying a replacement cable. A USB-C plug belongs with the current model; a Lightning plug belongs with the older Magic Mouse 2. Product names can be abbreviated in listings, so inspecting the physical port is safer than relying only on a seller’s title.
How to charge the Magic Mouse correctly
Apple’s current charging instructions cover both connector generations. Use the cable that matches your mouse, then connect the other end to a Mac or a power adapter.

- Identify the connector. Insert a USB-C cable into a current Magic Mouse, or a Lightning cable into an older Magic Mouse 2.
- Connect the other end. Plug it into a Mac or into a compatible power adapter.
- Leave the mouse stationary. Because the connector occupies the desk-facing surface, the mouse cannot be used normally during charging.
- Keep the mouse switched on for the best charging performance. Apple’s support guidance says the device should be on for the fastest battery-charging performance.
- Disconnect the cable before returning to work. Once the cable is removed, place the mouse back on its tracking surface and use it normally.
Apple’s instructions do not establish a universal charge-time figure, so do not infer an exact number of minutes from the phrase “fastest charging performance.” Charging speed varies with the power source, battery condition and the specific model.
How long should a charge last?
Apple’s current product page says the rechargeable battery powers the Magic Mouse for “about a month or more” between charges. That is Apple’s product estimate, not an independent laboratory result or a guarantee for every user.
Actual intervals depend on how frequently the mouse is used, connection and standby behavior, operating conditions and battery age. A heavily used mouse or an older battery may need charging sooner than Apple’s estimate, while lighter use can extend the interval. Treat the phrase as a planning guide rather than a promise of a fixed number of days.

Because the mouse cannot remain in service while the cable is attached, the most convenient approach is to charge before the battery is critically low. A short charging session during a natural break avoids having the mouse stop in the middle of a task.
Why the bottom position is inconvenient in practice
The cable blocks the tracking surface
A side or front connector could, in principle, leave the mouse resting on its glide surface. The underside connector does the opposite: the plug and cable occupy the area that must face the desk. That is why Apple’s own support wording describes the mouse as unavailable while charging rather than suggesting wired operation.
There is no documented emergency wired mode
Apple’s instructions do not describe a way to operate the Magic Mouse as a wired mouse while its battery charges. Connecting the cable is therefore a charging action, not a switch to a separate cable-powered operating mode.
Keyboard and trackpad comparisons have limits
Apple’s comparison with Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad is useful for understanding the trade-off, but those products have different shapes, contact surfaces and input mechanisms. Their ability to remain usable while charging does not establish that the Magic Mouse could or should have been designed the same way.
Common questions about models and cables
Can a USB-C cable charge every Magic Mouse?
No. The current Magic Mouse uses USB-C, while the earlier Magic Mouse 2 guide specifies Lightning. Match the cable to the port on your particular mouse.

Can a Lightning cable charge the current USB-C Magic Mouse?
No. A Lightning plug is intended for the older Magic Mouse 2 connector. The current model requires USB-C.
Does the included cable identify the generation?
The current Apple product listing includes a woven USB-C Charge Cable. An older Magic Mouse 2 setup uses the Lightning connection documented in its user guide. If the original cable is missing, inspect the mouse’s socket instead of assuming the generation from appearance alone.

Check the connector first
Confirm that the plug matches the port. A USB-C mouse needs a USB-C cable; a Lightning mouse needs Lightning. A mismatch can look like a charging failure when the real problem is simply an incompatible cable.
Check both ends of the cable
Reseat the plug at the mouse and at the Mac or power adapter. If you are using a Mac, try another available port. If you are using an adapter, verify that the adapter is connected to power.
Use the supported charging position
Turn the mouse over so the connector is fully accessible and the plug is not being pushed sideways against the desk. Do not attempt to drag the mouse around with the cable attached; Apple does not describe that as a supported use mode.

Allow time for a depleted battery
A mouse that has been fully depleted may not become immediately usable after a brief connection. Leave it connected, with the device switched on as Apple recommends for fastest charging performance, then disconnect and test it again.
Separate a cable problem from a mouse problem
If the correct connector is firmly seated but the battery still does not charge, test a known-good compatible cable or power source. Keep the model distinction in mind: a cable that works with a current USB-C mouse is not evidence that an older Lightning mouse is faulty, and vice versa.
How to plan around the charging interruption
- Charge proactively: connect the mouse during a break instead of waiting for an empty battery during active work.
- Keep the right spare cable: USB-C for the current model, Lightning for Magic Mouse 2.
- Use another input device if available: Apple’s documentation confirms that the Magic Mouse itself is unavailable while charging, so a keyboard shortcut, trackpad or another mouse can keep work moving.
- Do not assume a second mouse is required: Apple does not state that users must buy one; whether you want a backup is a personal workflow decision.
What this design means when comparing mice
If you are comparing the Magic Mouse with another model, evaluate the charging arrangement rather than treating the connector location as a cosmetic detail. Three practical questions matter:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Comparison axis | What is established for Magic Mouse | How to compare another model |
|---|---|---|
| Port and cable compatibility | Current model: USB-C; earlier Magic Mouse 2: Lightning | Verify the other maker’s connector and whether your existing cables fit |
| Use during charging | Apple says Magic Mouse is unavailable while charging | Check whether the competing mouse supports wired operation or remains unavailable |
| Battery-duration claim | Apple estimates “about a month or more” for the current model | Compare manufacturer estimates with similarly attributed claims, not unqualified test results |
This framework keeps the comparison fair. A manufacturer’s estimate should be labeled as an estimate, and a claim about another mouse should be verified from that maker’s own documentation before being treated as equivalent.
The bottom line on Apple’s design decision
The answer that can be supported directly is physical, not speculative: the Magic Mouse’s USB-C or Lightning port is on the underside, and a cable connected there prevents normal use. Apple provides charging instructions and a battery-life estimate of about a month or more for the current model.
Apple has not published an attributable explanation in the reviewed materials for why the port was placed underneath. Claims about silhouette, internal layout, deliberate inconvenience or a requirement to own a backup mouse go beyond what those documents establish. If you need to charge, use the connector that matches your generation, connect it to a Mac or power adapter, keep the mouse on while charging for Apple’s stated fastest-performance condition, and plan for the mouse to be unavailable until you unplug it.
