The Google search bar can look different because you may be viewing a different Google surface, such as the Google app home screen, an Android home-screen widget, an iPhone or iPad widget, or the Discover feed. Those surfaces do not always offer the same controls or appearance.
On the same surface, Google can also show different shortcut buttons, colors, transparency, themes, or feature entry points. The exact reason on one phone cannot be identified without knowing the device, operating-system and Google app versions, region, and which screen changed.

First identify which Google search bar changed
“The Google app search bar” can refer to several separate interfaces. Before changing settings, compare the location and behavior of the bar with this table.

A bar on the home screen is not necessarily the same component as the search field inside the Google app. If only one location changed, adjust that surface rather than assuming the entire Google app has been redesigned.

Why the design or buttons can differ
Different widgets have different controls
Google’s Android instructions describe the Search widget as customizable. You can select shortcuts, change the color, adjust transparency, and reset the widget to its previous look. These controls apply to the widget, not automatically to every search field in the Google app. See Google’s Android Search widget instructions for the documented options.
On iPhone and iPad, Google documents separate widget choices and a widget settings page inside the app. The available theme and shortcuts therefore may not match an Android widget or the search field shown inside the app. The iPhone and iPad widget guide lists the iOS-specific process.
Shortcut availability is not identical everywhere
The icons beside a search field are entry points to Google features, not necessarily permanent parts of the bar. Depending on the surface, platform, account, region, and feature availability, you might see Lens for image searches, Voice Search, Gemini, AI Mode, Search Live, Incognito, translation, or another shortcut. Seeing one of these buttons does not by itself prove that your phone has a fault or that a particular rollout caused the change.

Google describes AI Mode in Search and Live conversations in Search as ways to access newer search features on supported Android setups. Their presence in a widget or app screen can make the search area appear different from a screenshot taken on another device.

Discover may omit the bar
Some versions of Discover no longer display a search bar in the feed. That does not mean Search has been removed from the phone. Google’s Android widget help says you can add the Google Search widget from the Google app’s customization page or from the Android home-screen widget picker.
Doodles and other settings can change details
Google’s Android settings help explains that Doodles sometimes appear in the Search widget and documents controls for voice input, language, region, and Discover. Those settings can change details around the search experience, but Google does not state that they explain every overall design difference. A changed Doodle is therefore a narrower explanation than a completely different bar layout.
Restore or customize the bar on Android
These steps apply to the Google Search widget on an Android phone or tablet. Menu wording can vary slightly by Android launcher, but the Google app path is the documented route.

- Tap your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner.
- Choose Settings, then Customize Search widget.
- Change the available shortcuts, color, or transparency settings.
- Leave the settings page. Google says the changes save automatically.
- If the widget now looks worse or unlike the previous version, return to the same page and tap Reset to restore its previous appearance.
Add a widget when Discover has no search bar
If the missing bar is in Discover, add a separate home-screen widget rather than trying to alter the feed itself.

- Open the Google app and go to Settings > Customize Search widget, then use the option to add or manage the widget if it is offered.
- Alternatively, touch and hold an empty area of the Android home screen.
- Tap Widgets, find Google, and locate the Search widget.
- Touch and hold the widget, drag it to the desired home-screen position, and release it.
The widget and the Discover feed remain separate surfaces, so changing one does not necessarily change the other.
Customize the bar on an iPhone or iPad
Add the Google widget
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the icons begin to jiggle.
- Tap Edit, then Add Widget.
- Search for Google, choose a widget, and tap Add Widget.
- Tap Done to finish.
If Google does not appear in the widget gallery immediately after installation, open the Google app once and check the gallery again.
Change its theme and shortcuts
- Open the Google app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Settings, then Widgets.
- Select the available widget theme and configure the shortcuts.
Google’s documented choices include Lens, Voice Search, Incognito, Gemini, translation, and other features. The exact list shown on your device can differ, so an iPhone or iPad screenshot may not match another iOS device even when both use the same app.
What the feature buttons mean
Lens
Lens opens visual search tools, allowing the search process to start from an image or camera input rather than typed words. Its icon can make the bar look wider or add a button that was not visible before.

Voice Search
Voice Search starts spoken queries. Microphone access and language settings can affect whether the control is shown or how it behaves.
Gemini
A Gemini shortcut is an entry point to Google’s AI features. It is a shortcut, not evidence that the underlying search field has been replaced.
AI Mode
AI Mode provides AI-powered responses in Search where Google supports it. Availability is not universal, so another phone may show a conventional search control instead.

Live provides a real-time conversational Search experience on supported setups. A Live shortcut can therefore alter the row of icons without changing the basic function of typing a query.
Incognito and translation
On iPhone and iPad widgets, Google documents Incognito and translation among possible shortcuts. These are convenience buttons that can be selected in widget settings; they are not required for ordinary web searches.

If only the home-screen widget changed
- Open Google app > profile picture or initial > Settings > Customize Search widget and check the color, transparency, and shortcut choices.
- Use Reset if you want the widget’s previous appearance back.
- Check whether you are comparing the widget with the in-app search field; they are different surfaces.
If the search bar disappeared from Discover
- Confirm that you are looking at Discover rather than the Google app home screen.
- Add the Google Search widget from the Android widget picker.
- Keep using Discover for feed content and the widget for direct searches; one does not replace the other.
If a new icon appeared
- Identify the icon: Lens, microphone, Gemini, AI Mode, Live, Incognito, or translation.
- On Android, review the Search widget shortcut settings.
- On iPhone or iPad, review Google app > Settings > Widgets.
- Do not assume the icon indicates malware, a damaged display, or a failed phone component.
If the documented menus are missing
The instructions can differ by platform, app version, launcher, region, or feature availability. Confirm whether you are using Android or iOS/iPadOS and whether the control is in the Google app or a home-screen widget. A screenshot or precise description of the old and new layouts is more useful than the statement that “Google changed the bar.”
What information is needed to identify the exact cause
There is no single explanation that applies to every phone. To diagnose one device accurately, record:

- Whether the change is in the Google app, a home-screen widget, or Discover.
- Which element changed: shape, color, transparency, Doodle, shortcut icon, or the presence of the entire bar.
- A screenshot, or a description of what the bar looked like before and after.
That information distinguishes a widget setting from a platform-specific layout or a feature that is available only on some devices. Without it, claiming that a particular update, experiment, or redesign caused the change would be speculation.
