24/7 streaming

Why Does OBS Drop Frames During a 24/7 YouTube Stream?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First check which OBS counter is rising. Dropped frames (network) point to an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate your upload cannot sustain. Frames missed due to rendering lag point to scene-rendering or GPU pressure; skipped frames due to encoding lag point to an encoder that cannot keep up. A 24/7 schedule does not, by itself, identify the cause.

Identify the kind of frame loss before changing settings

Open OBS’s Stats window while the stream is running and watch the three counters. Note which increases, along with the elapsed stream time; a screenshot can help you compare results after a change. OBS’s connection guide says network-dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. That guidance applies to the network counter—not to rendering or encoding lag. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide also says it is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio itself to cause network-dropped frames.

OBS indicator What it points to Start by checking
Dropped frames (network) Connection stability or insufficient sustainable upload capacity to the ingest server Configured bitrate, available upload bandwidth, network reliability and ingest server
Frames missed due to rendering lag OBS is not rendering and compositing the scene in time GPU contention, demanding sources or filters, output resolution and frame rate
Skipped frames due to encoding lag The selected encoder and workload cannot encode quickly enough Encoder, resolution, frame rate and other costly output settings; inspect the OBS log

These counters diagnose different parts of the pipeline. Do not infer that you need a new computer component from the phrase “dropped frames” alone; without your OBS log, machine details and network measurements, the root cause cannot be narrowed further.

Fix network-dropped frames

1. Check bitrate against reliable upload capacity

Compare the configured stream bitrate with upload capacity available to OBS—not just a best-case speed test. YouTube recommends leaving 20% outbound-bandwidth headroom, and notes that other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream. Its guidance says the total streaming bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth. See YouTube’s network, audio and video troubleshooting guidance.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a stream with audio, account for total outbound bitrate, not only the video encoder’s setting. If the connection is near capacity or fluctuates, lower the bitrate to a level it can sustain with headroom. A platform recommendation is not proof that a particular home or office connection can reliably deliver that rate around the clock.

2. Improve the connection path

  • Use a reliable wired Ethernet connection if practical, rather than relying on a variable Wi-Fi link.
  • Reduce competing uploads and check whether shared-network use coincides with the counter rising.
  • If OBS offers another ingest server, compare it during a controlled test.
  • Change one variable at a time and watch the same Stats counters over a useful interval.

A Cat6 Ethernet cable can be a reasonable way to test or establish a wired connection when the network counter is rising. It will not fix rendering lag or encoding overload.

Fix rendering lag and encoding overload

If frames missed due to rendering lag are increasing

Rendering lag means OBS is struggling to build each scene in time. Reduce GPU contention and scene complexity before assuming hardware has failed:

  • Close other GPU-heavy applications.
  • If a game is running, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync where appropriate so it does not consume all available GPU capacity.
  • Simplify scenes and reduce costly browser sources, filters or other effects.
  • Lower output resolution or frame rate if the workload remains too high. A lower frame rate reduces rendering and encoding work.
  • On Windows, try running OBS as administrator, as OBS suggests for GPU overload.

If skipped frames due to encoding lag are increasing

The encoder is not completing work quickly enough for the chosen output and workload. Reduce resolution or frame rate, or otherwise lower costly encoding demands, then check whether the encoding-lag counter improves. Review the OBS log for the active encoder and overload messages before considering a hardware upgrade. The counter alone does not show whether the limit is CPU capacity, a hardware encoder or another configuration issue.

Set YouTube-compatible output without outrunning your connection

YouTube’s current encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds). Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists these 1080p examples:

H.264 output YouTube-listed minimum YouTube-listed recommended bitrate
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s platform figures, not a guarantee that your upload can sustain the stream. Select output settings that fit the available connection with YouTube’s recommended headroom; a stable, lower bitrate is preferable to one that repeatedly exceeds capacity. Refer to YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for its recommendations across codecs and formats.

Test changes and check stream health

  1. Record the OBS Stats counters and elapsed time before changing anything.
  2. Choose the diagnostic branch that matches the counter rising: network, rendering or encoding.
  3. Change one relevant setting or condition, such as bitrate, connection path, scene complexity or output load.
  4. Test with audio and video movement similar to the real stream, then monitor OBS counters and YouTube stream health. YouTube recommends testing under realistic conditions; see its live encoder troubleshooting guidance.
  5. Compare counters over a useful interval. If a local processing counter rises, do not treat an internet speed increase as the fix; if network drops rise, simplifying a scene may not address the connection problem.

What changes when the stream runs 24/7?

The same counter-based diagnosis applies to a continuous stream. The additional issue is the replay: YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete replay matters, plan for archive segmentation and keep a local recording as a backup. YouTube recommends local recording for that purpose. Details are in YouTube’s live stream archiving guidance.

Frame loss and viewer buffering are also different. OBS notes that viewers can buffer even when the broadcaster has not dropped frames; audience devices, locations and connections vary. A clean OBS counter does not guarantee every viewer has a smooth playback path.
