Why Does My Scheduled YouTube Livestream Start the Wrong Playlist?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Usually, the issue is that “playlist” refers to the wrong thing: a scheduled YouTube broadcast, the encoder’s selected broadcast, or the media source the encoder is sending. Check which screen shows the wrong item before changing anything. For an encoder-based stream, open the intended event in YouTube Studio, confirm the encoder is connected to that event, and inspect the Live Control Room preview before clicking Go live.

First identify what “wrong playlist” means

A YouTube playlist, a scheduled live event, and an encoder’s media playlist are separate objects. YouTube’s documented encoder setup describes connecting to a scheduled event and starting that broadcast; it does not establish that YouTube automatically chooses or starts a YouTube playlist when the event begins. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance is about the live event and feed, not selecting a playlist for you.

  • The YouTube watch page or video has the wrong playlist placement: check that video’s details and playlist assignment in YouTube Studio.
  • The wrong scheduled event is selected: compare the event shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room with the broadcast selected in your encoder.
  • The event is right but the preview shows the wrong content: check the encoder’s scene, media source, or local playlist.

This distinction matters: a stream key lets an encoder send a feed to YouTube; YouTube does not document it as a control for choosing among scheduled events.

Check the event and feed before going live

  1. Open the intended event. In YouTube Studio, go to Live Control Room → Manage and open the correct upcoming event. Check its title and scheduled time. YouTube’s instructions cover selecting or creating the event, connecting the encoder, checking preview, and going live. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. Compare the encoder’s broadcast selection. Make sure the encoder is sending to the same scheduled event you opened in Studio. If the selection is uncertain, reselect the intended event in the encoder.
  3. Check the event’s details and settings. If you created it with Reuse settings, review the new event. YouTube says reuse copies metadata, settings, and the stream key from the previous stream; it does not say reuse causes a wrong playlist or chooses the wrong broadcast. Details are in Manage live stream settings.
  4. Inspect the Live Control Room preview. Wait for the incoming feed and verify it shows the intended scene or video. If it does not, fix the encoder’s scene or media source before starting the event.
  5. Start the correct event. Once the event and preview match, click Go live for that event. YouTube also recommends verifying the event on your channel and watch page; see Streaming tips.
  6. Check playlist placement separately. If the preview and stream content are correct but the public video is in the wrong YouTube playlist, inspect the video’s own details and playlist assignment instead of changing the stream key.

Why the wrong event or content can appear

The encoder and Studio are pointed at different events

The event open in Live Control Room may not be the one selected in the encoder. Compare the event title and time in both places, and verify the feed in the preview before going live. YouTube’s workflow treats event selection, encoder connection, preview, and the Go live action as distinct steps. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.

The encoder is sending the wrong scene or media source

If Studio has the right event but the preview contains the wrong video, the problem is likely on the encoder side: check the active scene, media source, or local playlist. Changing YouTube video playlist placement will not change the content being sent by the encoder.

Reused event settings were not reviewed

Reusing a previous stream copies its metadata, settings, and stream key, according to YouTube’s live stream settings guidance. Review the resulting event before broadcasting. Reuse is a reason to double-check the event, not evidence by itself that YouTube will select a different scheduled broadcast.

A scheduled-broadcast selector behaved unexpectedly

An OBS Forums user reported on October 14, 2024, that choosing the third scheduled broadcast through OBS’s “Manage broadcast” feature started the first one; the poster later said selection worked after the twelfth and thirteenth attempts. That is one user’s anecdote, not an official diagnosis or evidence of a current, widespread bug. Read the OBS Forums report.

Preflight checklist

  • Open the intended upcoming event in YouTube Studio’s Manage view.
  • Check its title, scheduled time, and stream settings.
  • Confirm the encoder has selected that same event; reselect it if needed.
  • Confirm the encoder is sending the intended scene or media source.
  • Wait for the Live Control Room preview and verify its content before clicking Go live.
  • After the stream starts, check the event or watch page. If the stream itself is correct but playlist placement is not, investigate the video’s playlist assignment separately.

YouTube’s general streaming tips also recommend checking the event and stream before and during broadcast.

Troubleshooting common cases

What you see What to check What to do
The wrong event appears selected in the encoder. Compare its selection with the event title and time in Live Control Room. Select the intended broadcast in the encoder, then wait for its feed in Studio preview before going live.
The correct event is open, but the preview shows the wrong video. Check the encoder’s active scene, media source, or local playlist. Correct the source and verify the updated preview.
The feed and event are correct, but the public video is in the wrong YouTube playlist. Inspect the YouTube video’s details and playlist assignment. Correct the video’s playlist placement; do not change the stream key to solve a playlist assignment.
The event was created using Reuse settings. Review the new event’s copied metadata, settings, and stream key. Correct any settings that should differ before starting the stream.
The encoder cannot connect. Check the event’s stream URL and key, and follow YouTube’s connection troubleshooting. Update the encoder if the key has changed. Resetting a key requires updating the encoder; it is a connection or security remedy, not a documented fix for selecting the wrong event.

YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” A key helps the encoder connect; it does not identify which scheduled event to start. See Manage live stream settings.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube livestream, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an encoder-selection fix: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service runs the stream from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not live camera input. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
