The delay may come from a stuttering game, a controller that is being translated incorrectly, network latency or packet loss, streaming overhead, or a multiplayer simulation that has fallen out of sync. Start by identifying which symptom you have: a choppy whole screen, smooth video with late flippers, or opponents and balls that jump or disagree. That distinction tells you which test to run next.
The fastest reliable process is to reproduce the problem in local play, verify that the controller is recognized, compare online play with a quieter network, and then test streaming separately. Change one variable at a time and record what changes. If the match remains desynchronized, the game title, platform, and networking model are required before anyone can prescribe a port, relay, rollback, or netcode setting.

What “lag” can mean in a pinball game
Players use lag for several different failures. Steam’s own support material separates game-performance troubleshooting from network-lag troubleshooting, and that distinction matters for a flipper game where a few frames can change the result.
| What you observe | Most useful first hypothesis | First test |
|---|---|---|
| The entire table, ball and camera stutter or run at an uneven rate | Local performance, rendering, display synchronization or an overloaded host machine | Play offline or in a local practice mode and watch whether the same stutter occurs |
| Video is smooth, but a button press produces a late flipper | Controller path, wireless link, Steam input translation, display processing or streaming delay | Try the same controller locally, then try a wired controller if available |
| The table is smooth but remote objects warp, jump or briefly freeze | Network latency, jitter or packet loss | Compare a quiet network with a direct wired connection when practical |
| Players see different ball positions, scores or outcomes | Multiplayer synchronization or a game-specific networking problem | Record the game, platform, players’ views and the time of each divergence |
| Only a streamed session feels delayed | Capture, encode, network, decode or display latency in the streaming path | Use the Steam Link or Remote Play performance overlay and compare with local play |
These are diagnostic clues, not proof. A poor frame rate can feel like input lag, and packet loss can resemble high latency. Do not conclude that Wi-Fi, a particular controller, or the game itself is responsible until a controlled comparison changes the symptom.

A 60-second isolation sequence
Run these checks before changing advanced settings. They separate the game, input device, network and stream without assuming which one is at fault.
- Watch the whole image. Does the ball, animation and camera move smoothly, or does everything hitch? If the whole scene is choppy, begin with local performance rather than network settings.
- Try a repeatable local action. In offline or practice play, press a flipper at a predictable moment. If it is still late, an online server is not the first suspect.
- Repeat with another input path. Use the same controller through a different USB port, or test a wired controller if you normally use wireless. A change here points to the controller path, not necessarily to the game simulation.
- Compare local and online play. If local play is responsive but online play shows warping or late remote events, investigate the connection and the game’s multiplayer implementation.
- Compare streamed and non-streamed play. A session played directly on the host is a different test from Steam Remote Play or Steam Link. Streaming adds capture, encode, transport and decode stages.
- Write down the result. Note the title and version, platform, local or online mode, controller type, wired or wireless connection, and the exact symptom. This prevents a vague “lag” report from sending support down the wrong path.
Step 1: rule out local game stutter
Steam recommends addressing game-performance problems before treating every delay as network lag. A table that renders unevenly can make a perfectly timed input appear late because the next visible frame arrives too slowly.
Use an offline baseline
Load a local table, practice mode or other activity that does not depend on another player. Use the same table, camera and graphics settings you use online. If the ball and table stutter in this baseline, networking is not required to reproduce the problem. Close unnecessary applications, stop active downloads and check whether the game reports a performance warning. Avoid changing several graphics options at once; alter one setting, repeat the same action and keep the change only if the behavior improves.

Look for a stable visual cadence while repeatedly tapping a flipper. If the animation is smooth but the flipper visibly follows the press late, investigate input, display or streaming. If the animation itself pauses, jumps or changes speed, investigate rendering and system load first. This distinction is more useful than an unverified latency number because the title, display mode and measurement method are unknown.
Check the display chain
A television or monitor can add processing even when the game and controller are healthy. Use the display’s low-latency or game mode if it has one, and compare the same session on a different display only as a diagnostic. Disable motion interpolation and other video processing for the test. These changes address local presentation delay; they cannot repair a multiplayer simulation that is disagreeing between players.
Step 2: verify the controller path
Before blaming the network, confirm that the computer receives the button press consistently and that Steam passes it to the game in the expected format.

Check recognition in Steam
- Open Steam’s controller settings (the exact menu wording can vary by Steam client layout).
- Use Big Picture mode if that is the interface in which you normally launch the game.
- Confirm that the controller appears, that its buttons register when tested, and that the intended layout is active.
- Launch the game only after Steam recognizes the device. If it is not listed or inputs do not register in Steam, changing the game’s network settings will not fix the problem.
For a diagnostic comparison, connect the controller by USB if the platform and device support it. A wired test removes the controller’s wireless radio and battery state from the path; it does not prove that a wireless device is defective if the symptom remains.

Account for input translation
Steam Input can translate a controller’s signals before the game receives them. Some games expect XInput, while others use a different or raw-input path. Steam notes that some raw-input games may not work through Remote Play. Therefore, a controller can be visible in Steam and still behave differently when a game is streamed.
Do not apply one pinball game’s configuration globally. A Steam Community announcement for Zaccaria Pinball describes a controller problem involving the Steam Controller API and XInput configuration. That is a title-specific example, not evidence that every pinball game should use the same setting. If your title has an official controller notice, follow that title’s instructions and record which API option was active when the problem occurred.
Recognize input symptoms
- No response at all: check recognition, bindings, battery, cable and the game’s selected device.
- Intermittent or repeated presses: test another port or controller and inspect for wireless interference or a failing switch.
- Consistent delay only in a stream: compare local play and check Remote Play input support before replacing hardware.
- Both flippers respond late in local play: include display processing and the game’s own input handling in the investigation.
Step 3: test network latency, jitter and packet loss
If local play is smooth and the online match alone shows warping, late remote events or brief freezes, investigate the network path. Steam’s network diagnostics describe smooth frame rate alongside warped or jerky remote elements as a possible network issue, while warning that packet loss can look like latency. A single slow moment is not enough to identify the cause.
Make a controlled network comparison
- Stop cloud backups, video uploads, large downloads and other bandwidth-heavy activity on the connection.
- Repeat the same match or test at a similar time, noting whether the symptom changes.
- Compare the game’s selected server or region when the game exposes that choice. A distant or busy region can change latency, but the game’s own support guidance should determine which regions are valid.
- If practical, connect the gaming device directly to the router with Ethernet and repeat the test. Keep the controller and game settings unchanged.
- Record whether the problem is reduced, unchanged or worse. The comparison tests the network path; it does not establish that Wi-Fi is always the cause.
Ethernet is a useful control condition, not a guaranteed cure. If a wired comparison produces the same desynchronization while local play remains perfect, the issue may be upstream routing, the game’s server or relay, or a title-specific synchronization fault.
Interpret common network symptoms
| Symptom during online play | What it suggests | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Remote ball or opponent jumps to a new position | Jitter, packet loss or delayed state updates | That your local frame rate is healthy or that Wi-Fi is solely responsible |
| All players freeze and then continue | A temporary transport or server pause | That the controller caused the pause |
| Only one player appears delayed | A path, device or client-specific condition | That the other player’s connection is at fault |
| The same divergence occurs at the same game event | A repeatable game or simulation issue may be involved | That a router change will fix it |
Step 4: troubleshoot Steam Remote Play and Steam Link
Streaming combines game execution on one machine with video delivery and input return to another. A responsive local game can therefore feel delayed when streamed, and a network test cannot correct latency introduced by local rendering, display processing or the game simulation.

Check Remote Play input support
Steam’s Remote Play guidance says to verify that Steam recognizes the controller and to configure it in Steam’s controller settings. Perform that check on the device that is sending the input, not just on the host running the game. If the title relies on raw input that Remote Play does not support, a recognized controller may still fail or behave differently in the stream.
Use the streaming performance overlay
- Start the streamed session and enable the Steam Link or Remote Play performance overlay using the client’s current streaming settings.
- Watch the overlay while reproducing the late-flipper or stutter symptom.
- Note whether it reports network activity, dropped frames, encoding or decoding pressure at the same moment.
- Repeat with a direct wired connection when practical, keeping the host, client, controller and game unchanged.
A change in the overlay or in the symptom during the wired comparison implicates the streaming path. No change means you should return to local rendering, display processing, controller handling or the game itself. The overlay is a diagnostic aid, not a guarantee that the highest reported category is the only cause.
Do not confuse stream delay with desync
With stream delay, the host may simulate the game correctly while the remote screen shows it late. With desync, players or clients disagree about the game state itself. Ask whether the host’s local view and the remote view differ, whether all players see the same ball position, and whether the discrepancy persists after the stream is stopped. Those answers determine whether to pursue streaming support or the game’s multiplayer support.
Step 5: investigate display and input settings without losing your baseline
Once you have a clean local and network comparison, test presentation settings one at a time. Record the original values so you can undo an unsuccessful change.
- Toggle the display’s game or low-latency mode.
- Compare fullscreen and windowed modes if the title supports both.
- Check whether a frame-synchronization option changes visible pacing; do not assume a particular setting is correct for every display.
- Close overlays and capture tools temporarily, then repeat the same flipper test.
- Use one controller profile and one game binding while diagnosing. Profile changes can make an input appear inconsistent even when the network is healthy.
These are isolation steps, not universal performance prescriptions. Keep the setting that improves the measured symptom on your hardware, and restore any setting that makes another part of the game worse.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When “lag” is actually desynchronization
Desynchronization means that clients no longer agree on the authoritative game state. It is different from a delayed picture: a player may see a ball drain while another sees it continue, or scores and timers may diverge. The correct fix depends on how that specific game exchanges state.

Valve’s Steam Networking documentation describes several possible arrangements, including traffic through a relay, a host, a dedicated server or direct player connections. The unnamed pinball title could use any of these, so a generic port-forwarding rule, rollback switch or netcode command would be speculation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCollect evidence support can use
- Write the exact game title, edition and version, plus the platform and storefront.
- State whether the match was local, peer-to-peer, server-hosted or streamed, if the game discloses that information.
- List each player’s region and connection type, including whether the test used Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Describe whether all players saw the same state or only one client diverged.
- Record the time, match mode, table, visible error, reconnect event and any network spike shown by the game or streaming overlay.
- Attach relevant logs or screenshots if the game’s support instructions request them, while removing account and personal information.
Support can then determine whether the incident matches a known server, relay, client-version or simulation issue. Without those details, “desync fix” searches tend to mix unrelated games and can lead to unsafe router changes.
Decision matrix: choose the next test from the symptom
| Result of your comparison | Next action |
|---|---|
| Stutter appears in local and online play | Resolve local performance, display or system-load issues first; network changes are unlikely to remove the baseline stutter. |
| Local play is smooth, online play warps, and Ethernet helps | Investigate the Wi-Fi or local network path, background traffic and the game’s server region. |
| Local play is smooth, online play warps, and Ethernet does not help | Capture timing and region details, then contact the game’s support; routing, relay or server behavior may be involved. |
| Local controller test is good, but Remote Play is delayed | Check Steam controller recognition, raw-input compatibility and the streaming performance overlay. |
| A wired controller changes the result | Investigate the wireless device, interference, battery and bindings; keep the wired setup as a diagnostic reference. |
| Players disagree about the game state even with stable local performance | Escalate as a game-specific synchronization problem with the exact evidence listed above. |
Preventive setup for more consistent matches
After identifying the failing path, keep the setup that produced a stable comparison rather than changing everything permanently. Use a consistent controller profile, avoid heavy background transfers during competitive sessions, and keep the game and Steam client on versions supported by the title. If you play through a stream, place the host and client where a direct wired test is possible and keep the performance overlay available for future incidents.
Save a short record of the working conditions: local or streamed mode, controller connection, display mode, network path and game version. When a later update changes behavior, you can compare against that baseline instead of relying on memory.
What not to assume
- Wi-Fi is not automatically the cause merely because a player is not using Ethernet; the community question about Steam running slowly on “ALP” is an anecdote, not a diagnosis.
- A smooth frame rate does not rule out packet loss, and a choppy frame rate does not prove network latency.
- A controller setting documented for one pinball title is not a universal Steam or pinball setting.
- An Ethernet cable can test the local network path but cannot repair display delay, local simulation timing or a server-side synchronization fault.
- There is no responsible universal desync command without knowing the game’s networking implementation.
When to contact support
Contact the game’s developer or platform support when the title remains out of sync after a local baseline, controller check and network comparison. Include the exact title and platform, mode, version, region, connection type, controller path, timestamps, reproduction steps and whether every player saw the divergence. Explain what changed during each comparison and what did not. That information lets support distinguish a client-performance issue from a transport problem or a multiplayer simulation defect.
