A photo usually looks too dark as ASCII art because the converter has compressed its tones into a short range of characters, or because the characters’ light-and-dark polarity does not suit the background. A stretched image often points to character-cell proportions; a result that breaks only after pasting is more likely a font or line-wrapping problem. Check those stages separately before changing the source image.
How a photo becomes ASCII art
A converter reduces an image to a grid of character cells. It estimates the brightness of each cell and substitutes a character from a density ramp: lighter-looking symbols represent lighter areas, and denser symbols represent darker areas. This is a lossy translation, not a pixel-for-pixel copy, so fine detail and some outlines will disappear. TxtArt’s converter documentation and anbalabs’ converter documentation describe this kind of tone-to-character mapping.

Brightness calculations vary by implementation. For example, one documented approach uses ITU-R BT.601 luma weights (0.299R + 0.587G + 0.114B), while another describes Rec. 709 weights. These are examples, not a universal rule: converters can sample, process, and map images differently.
Why the result looks too dark or flat
The tones are crowded together
If much of the source photo falls into a narrow middle range, many cells may map to similar characters. The result can look like a dark or flat wash rather than a recognizable image. A short density ramp gives the converter fewer tonal steps to work with, and increasing output width cannot restore distinctions that have already been lost through sampling.

Brightness and contrast do different jobs
Contrast spreads tonal values across the available character steps, which can make light and dark areas easier to distinguish. Brightness shifts the overall tone upward or downward. If the image is flat, adjust contrast gradually; if the whole result is still too dark, then raise brightness separately. TxtArt’s documentation summarizes its own controls this way: “Contrast usually helps more than brightness, because it decides where the density steps fall rather than sliding all of them the same way.” That is vendor guidance, not a guarantee that every converter will behave identically. TxtArt converter documentation and HYPOTHESIS tool documentation describe brightness and contrast controls.
The characters are inverted for the background
ASCII art can use light characters on a dark background or dark characters on a light background. If the image reads like a photographic negative, toggle the converter’s “invert” or equivalent setting and judge it against the background where you intend to show it. The right polarity depends on that viewing context, not just the source photo. TxtArt and HYPOTHESIS document inversion controls.

Why the picture looks stretched or squashed
A character cell is not necessarily square. Monospace characters are often taller than they are wide, so mapping square image samples directly to square character positions can make the output look vertically stretched. Enable the converter’s “correct for character aspect ratio” option, or the equivalent setting, if available. This correction is an approximation: the actual proportions depend on the font and display settings. anbalabs and HYPOTHESIS describe aspect-ratio handling in their converter documentation.
If the preview looks proportionate but a pasted version does not, the destination may use a different font or line spacing. Check the final display rather than assuming the converter preview and destination render characters with identical geometry.

Why ASCII art breaks after pasting
ASCII art relies on each character taking up the same horizontal space. In a proportional font, letters have different widths and the columns no longer line up. Use a monospace font in a code block, terminal, or other fixed-width text area. Also check whether the destination wraps long lines: wrapping can break the image even when the conversion itself is sound. widantoo’s converter guide discusses monospace display and pasted alignment problems.
Troubleshoot in this order
- Compare the preview with the pasted result. If only the pasted copy is broken, switch the destination to monospace and turn off wrapping if possible. If lines still do not fit, reduce the output width.
- Match the polarity to the background. Toggle inversion if light and dark areas appear reversed in the intended display.
- Correct the character proportions. Enable aspect-ratio correction in the converter, then inspect the result in its final font and display.
- Adjust tones one control at a time. Increase contrast gradually to separate similar areas; adjust brightness separately if the entire result remains too dark or light.
- Simplify the source and ramp. Crop tightly around a clear subject, try grayscale, and use a shorter character ramp when the output is small. A distinct silhouette and clear light-dark separation tend to survive coarse sampling better than thin lines, small text, or busy detail. Raising contrast or adding columns cannot recover detail the conversion has discarded. The academic paper “Structure-based ASCII Art” discusses trade-offs in tone-based rendering.
- Fit the output to its destination. TxtArt and anbalabs each give roughly 60–80 columns as guidance for README or terminal output; this is a starting point from those converters, not a universal standard. Narrow chat or document areas need fewer columns to avoid wrapping. TxtArt and anbalabs provide their width guidance in their converter documentation.
What to expect from a better source image
Use a tightly framed subject with a clear outline and strong separation between light and dark regions. Thin features, fine textures, small lettering, and low-contrast backgrounds are especially vulnerable when many pixels are averaged into each character cell. A shorter ramp can make a small output more legible by reducing subtle distinctions it cannot render reliably; a wider output may preserve more detail, but it also takes more space and is more likely to wrap.
