A 1080p label in YouTube’s player does not by itself prove your encoder sent only 1080p. Check the encoder’s outgoing resolution and YouTube’s reported input first; then distinguish those from the quality a viewer’s device and connection can play. YouTube automatically detects the incoming resolution and frame rate by default and transcodes live input into multiple playback formats. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance
First determine where 1080p appears
There are two different signals to inspect: what your encoder sends to YouTube (ingest), and what the YouTube player offers or selects for a viewer (playback). A camera or game running at 4K is not proof that the encoder is sending 4K. YouTube detects the encoder’s incoming resolution and frame rate automatically by default, then transcodes the stream into multiple output formats.
- If the encoder output or Live Control Room input is 1080p: troubleshoot the encoder’s output resolution, scaling, and stream-key configuration. YouTube is receiving 1080p.
- If Live Control Room confirms 4K input but a viewer sees a maximum of 1080p: check the player’s quality menu, device, and network. YouTube documents multi-format transcoding, but that alone does not establish why a particular viewer is not offered a 4K rendition.
- If stream health reports connection or bitrate problems: compare sustained upload capacity with the bitrate guidance for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then test under representative conditions.
These checks narrow the cause; without the encoder output settings and stream-health information, there is no way to identify the fault in an individual stream.
Check the encoder’s actual output
- While the stream is active, open the encoder’s output or streaming settings and confirm that its active video resolution is 3840 × 2160 and frame rate is 60 fps. Menu names differ by encoder, so check the active stream output, not only the canvas, preview, camera, or game resolution.
- Check for output scaling. A 4K source can be reduced to 1920 × 1080 before it is sent. If the output is set to 1080p, change it to 3840 × 2160 and 60 fps, then verify the active output again.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, compare the reported incoming resolution and frame rate with the encoder’s output. A 1080p input means the issue is upstream of playback: YouTube is not receiving a 4K60 signal.
Check the stream key’s resolution setting
YouTube recommends automatic detection of encoder resolution and frame rate by default. If you need manual selection, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution in Live Control Room. This is a detection and configuration choice; it does not make a 1080p encoder output into 4K60. The encoder must still send 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps. YouTube’s stream-key guidance

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Match codec and bitrate to 4K60
YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists the following figures. Its recommendations depend on the ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate; they are not a guarantee that every connection can sustain a given stream.
| Incoming video | Codec | YouTube bitrate guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | H.264 | 35 Mbps recommended |
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 10–40 Mbps range |
| 1080p, 60 fps | H.264 | 12 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p, 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 4–10 Mbps range |
Use the guidance for the codec actually being sent; do not compare an H.264 stream against the AV1/H.265 range. For a 4K60 H.264 stream, YouTube recommends 35 Mbps. For AV1 or H.265, its listed range is 10–40 Mbps. A connection that cannot reliably sustain the selected output can produce stream-health trouble. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and choosing a quality the connection can reliably support. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations

Verify the rest of the encoder settings
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video ingestion.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps in the listed guidance.
- Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR), as specified in the guidance.
- Keyframes: set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Latency: the low-latency improvement option is unavailable for 2160p (4K), which uses normal latency.
If these values are set correctly but Live Control Room still reports 1080p, recheck the encoder’s active output resolution and selected stream key rather than assuming the source resolution is being transmitted.
Test the connection and read stream health
- Run an upload speed test, as YouTube recommends, and assess whether the connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. A brief peak is not evidence of stable capacity throughout a live session.
- Test a stream using representative motion and audio. YouTube recommends testing before the event with conditions similar to the real broadcast.
- Watch the stream-health messages in Live Control Room during the test and the live event. If they report connection or bitrate trouble, reduce the stream to a quality the connection can reliably support, or investigate the upload path before trying 4K60 again.
- Compare the encoder’s active output with YouTube’s reported input during the same session. This helps separate an encoder configuration problem from a playback-quality issue.
YouTube recommends a reliable connection and upload-bitrate testing; its guidance does not prescribe Ethernet cabling as a guaranteed fix. Check the encoder output and stream-health evidence before buying hardware.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder output is 1920 × 1080 | Encoder output resolution or scaling | Set the active output to 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps, then verify it is sending that output. |
| Encoder says 4K60, but YouTube reports 1080p input | Selected stream key or the actual outgoing signal | Compare the active encoder output and stream key settings; use automatic detection by default or configure a custom key’s manual Stream Resolution setting. |
| YouTube reports 4K input, but a viewer sees only 1080p | Playback selection, device, or network | Check the player’s quality menu and the viewer’s connection and device. The available evidence does not identify a single universal cause. |
| Stream health reports connection or bitrate problems | Upload stability relative to codec and bitrate | Test upload capacity, check the codec-specific guidance, and test again with representative content. |
