Why Does FFmpeg Use 100% CPU When Looping Videos on Vultr?

FFmpeg’s loop option repeats input; encoding, filters, and concurrent jobs may be what drive CPU use. Diagnose the command and test stream copy when compatible.

Looping a video with FFmpeg does not, by itself, explain high CPU use. The likely cause is that FFmpeg is also decoding and re-encoding the video, applying filters, or running several streams at once. Check the full command and the process count first; if the output accepts the input’s existing codecs and parameters, testing stream copy with -c copy can avoid video re-encoding. The exact cause depends on your command, workload, and Vultr instance.

What looping does—and what can consume CPU

FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option repeats an input indefinitely. It does not say whether FFmpeg is simply passing the compressed audio and video through or doing substantial work on every frame. The output options determine that.

  • Stream copy: -c copy copies the selected streams without decoding, filtering, or encoding them. It is usually the first diagnostic test when the destination can accept the source streams as-is.
  • Re-encoding: An encoder such as -c:v libx264 means video is encoded again. Decoding and encoding each frame can be CPU-intensive.
  • Filters and conversions: Options such as -vf or -filter_complex, including scaling or frame-rate conversion, add processing. Copying a stream is not compatible with transformations that change that stream.
  • Audio work: Check whether audio is copied or encoded too. A video-copy test does not rule out CPU work elsewhere in the command.

FFmpeg’s option documentation explains stream looping, stream copy, and input read-rate behavior: FFmpeg command-line documentation. Check the options supported by your installed build as well; documentation can change over time.

Inspect the command and test stream copy

  1. Record the complete command. Look for -c:v libx264 or another encoder, -vf and -filter_complex, scaling, frame-rate changes, and the audio codec option. Also note how many FFmpeg commands are running concurrently.
  2. Check whether the destination accepts the original streams. The container, protocol, video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and other parameters must be compatible. Stream copy cannot make an incompatible stream compatible.
  3. Run a controlled copy test if compatible. Replace re-encoding options with -c copy for the streams being passed through, while preserving the input loop and required output settings. Compare FFmpeg’s CPU use under the same workload. Do not use this test as a final command until you have confirmed the output plays correctly and the destination accepts it.
  4. Interpret the result. If CPU use drops substantially, re-encoding was likely a major contributor. If it stays high, inspect audio processing, filters, muxing and network behavior, other processes, and the number of concurrent FFmpeg jobs; the available facts do not establish one universal alternative cause.

What -re changes

For file input that must be sent at real-time speed, -re reads at the file’s native frame rate; FFmpeg documents it as equivalent to -readrate 1. It controls pacing, not encoding complexity. Keep it when real-time pacing is required, but do not expect it to make a costly encode inexpensive or to replace reducing processing work.

Check Vultr CPU use and workload size

Compare the CPU usage of the FFmpeg process with the instance-level CPU metric, and verify the instance’s allocated vCPUs. Check whether the load is sustained or brief and whether several FFmpeg processes—or unrelated tasks—are competing for CPU. Vultr documents CPU monitoring for Compute Cloud, but that metric alone does not identify the cause or establish that a particular instance size is sufficient: Vultr monitoring documentation.

A 2021 FFmpeg-user mailing-list post described six looping, real-time RTSP processes using libx264 reaching 100% CPU on the poster’s setup. That is an individual report, not a benchmark or a prediction for your Vultr instance: FFmpeg-user discussion.

If re-encoding is necessary

If the destination requires a different codec, resolution, frame rate, overlay, or other transformation, stream copy may not meet the requirement. Reduce work in measured steps: change one variable at a time, then check CPU use and confirm the output still meets your needs.

  • Test a lower output resolution or frame rate only if the resulting quality and motion are acceptable.
  • Test a different encoder preset and compare its CPU cost and output quality; no preset guarantees a particular CPU ceiling.
  • Reduce the number of simultaneous encoding jobs if the combined workload is saturating the allocated CPUs.
  • Consider thread limits only as a measured experiment. FFmpeg’s filter-pipeline thread default is based on available CPUs; a thread setting is not a universal remedy.
  • Use hardware acceleration only after confirming that the instance exposes a suitable accelerator and the installed FFmpeg build supports the required encoder or decoder. Some hardware-acceleration paths involve copies between GPU and system memory and can perform worse than software decoding on modern CPUs.

FFmpeg’s documentation covers threading and hardware acceleration alongside its other options: FFmpeg command-line documentation. Test the actual command and output path rather than assuming an accelerator or thread setting will help.

Common symptoms and fixes

  • CPU falls with -c copy: Encoding or related frame processing was likely a major cost. Confirm playback and destination compatibility before keeping the change.
  • CPU stays high with stream copy: Count concurrent processes and check audio options, filters that remain in the command, other instance workloads, and output/muxing behavior. Stream copy alone does not prove FFmpeg is the only source of CPU use.
  • CPU spikes when several loops start: Compare one process with the same processes running together. Concurrent jobs share the instance’s allocated CPU resources.
  • Adding -re does not lower CPU: That is expected if encoding or filtering remains; -re paces input rather than reducing the work per frame.
  • Hardware encoding is unavailable or slower: Verify accelerator exposure, build support, and the full path’s performance. If transfers or unsupported settings are involved, use a measured software configuration instead.
