There is no established universal few-hour cutoff for FFmpeg streams to YouTube. The stop time alone does not reveal the cause: FFmpeg may have exited, its input may have stalled, its output or network connection may have failed, or YouTube may be reporting an ingest or format problem. Compare FFmpeg’s logs and process state with the timestamped health messages in YouTube Live Control Room before changing settings.
Start with the evidence at the time the stream stopped
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Note the stream health indicator and the exact wording, severity, and timestamp of each error around the stoppage. YouTube says errors appear alongside stream health, and unresolved errors continue to appear. Red errors are critical and may inhibit an event; yellow errors may degrade quality. See YouTube’s live-stream error guidance.
- Check the FFmpeg process and log at that same time. Determine whether FFmpeg exited, is still running but no longer reading input, or is reading input while output has stopped or produced an error. Those are different failure points; the symptom alone cannot distinguish them.
- Check whether the source is still producing frames. If it is a file, inspect whether reading reached its end or stalled. If it is a capture device or live input, check that the source remains available and frames continue to arrive.
- Match the dashboard message to the relevant leg of the pipeline. Investigate an input or continuity problem when frames stop arriving; investigate output and network errors when FFmpeg remains active but cannot send; check encoding configuration when YouTube reports a format issue.
This is a practical diagnostic sequence, not a guaranteed fix. Without the command, input type, FFmpeg version, protocol, log, and YouTube error message, prescribing a particular flag or command would be guesswork.
What YouTube’s health messages can tell you
Incorrect format
If YouTube reports an incorrect-format error, its guidance identifies H.264 video and AAC audio as the expected combination for proper ingestion. Check the actual encoded output rather than assuming the input file’s format is what FFmpeg sends. Follow the message and configuration guidance in YouTube’s error documentation.
Video starvation
YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes videoIngestionStarved as YouTube not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming. It is a clue to investigate incoming video continuity, not proof of the underlying cause. Check whether FFmpeg is still producing and sending frames, then correlate that with the input and output logs. The issue description is in the LiveStreams API documentation.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Red and yellow errors
Use the severity and timestamp to prioritize investigation, but do not infer that a warning identifies a specific FFmpeg fault. The dashboard reports YouTube’s view of the stream; FFmpeg’s log and process state help locate what happened on the sender side.
Check FFmpeg input reading before adding flags
FFmpeg’s -re (also documented as -readrate 1) controls input reading speed. It is commonly relevant when pacing file input, but the FFmpeg documentation cautions against using a low read rate with an actual capture device or live stream because it may cause packet loss. Confirm what kind of input the command uses and whether a read-rate option is appropriate before changing it. See the FFmpeg documentation.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
A stream that runs for hours and then stops is not, by itself, evidence that -re is missing or that a particular buffering value is wrong. First establish whether the source stopped, the process exited, or output failed.
Do not confuse HTTP reconnect options with RTMP output recovery
FFmpeg documents options such as reconnect and reconnect_on_network_error for HTTP client input. Those options concern reconnecting an HTTP input; they are not an automatic cure for an RTMP output failure while sending to YouTube. Apply reconnect settings only after identifying the failed connection and confirming that the relevant protocol and direction are covered by the option. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.

Could YouTube simply stop the stream after a few hours?
The available official guidance does not establish a normal few-hour cutoff for FFmpeg streams. YouTube’s live-stream setup page covers account prerequisites and active-stream limits, but those points do not explain a generic few-hour stop; see Get started with live streaming.
Likewise, YouTube’s note that DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours concerns viewer rewind, not proof that YouTube stops receiving the stream. See Turn on DVR on live streams.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you observe at the stop time | What to check next | What the evidence does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg has exited | Read the final log lines and identify the reported error or end-of-input condition; compare the timestamp with YouTube’s health messages. | The elapsed time alone does not identify why the process ended. |
| FFmpeg is running, but input frames have stopped | Check source availability, whether a file reached its end, and any read-rate setting that may be unsuitable for a live or capture source. | A YouTube starvation message does not by itself identify the input-side cause. |
| FFmpeg is reading input, but output has stopped or errored | Inspect the output error and network or protocol details in the log; use only recovery options applicable to that output protocol. | HTTP input reconnect options do not automatically repair RTMP output. |
| YouTube reports an incorrect format | Verify that the stream output uses H.264 video and AAC audio, as indicated by YouTube’s guidance. | The error does not establish that a particular command-line change is appropriate without checking the actual output. |
| YouTube reports video starvation | Correlate the timestamp with FFmpeg’s input-frame and output activity to investigate continuity. | The API description defines the health issue, not its root cause in a particular stream. |
