Why Does Chrome’s Full-Page Screenshot Miss Part of My Webpage?

A Chrome full-page screenshot can miss content when the capture only covers the visible viewport, when the page’s measured document bounds do not include the missing area, or when that content has not rendered yet. First confirm you are using full-page capture; then check the page’s scrolling layout, render state, and screenshot size. The exact cause depends on the page and how you capture it.

1. Check that the capture extends beyond the viewport

A screenshot of the visible viewport captures what is on screen, not necessarily the page below it. In the Chrome DevTools Protocol, Page.captureScreenshot has a captureBeyondViewport option; its default is false. A restrictive clip can also limit the captured area. Chromium’s full-page capture path measures the main frame and captures with beyond-viewport enabled.

  • In DevTools: choose the full-page screenshot option rather than a visible-area or viewport screenshot.
  • In automation: inspect the screenshot call. Check whether capture beyond the viewport is enabled and whether a clip restricts the width, height, or position.

If the result is exactly the size of the browser’s visible content area, this is the first thing to investigate.

2. Check whether the missing content is part of the document

Full-page capture uses the page’s measured dimensions. Scrolling through a page manually does not always mean every region belongs to the main document’s scrollable height.

Look for nested scrolling regions

A panel, feed, or other container may scroll independently while the outer page stays in place. If the missing material is inside such a region, it may not be included in the document-height capture. Scroll that region manually to confirm. If it is independently scrollable, try capturing the element separately or use a workflow that captures the specific element; capturing the entire page may not include all of the container’s scrollable contents.

Compare the expected page bounds

If the missing area is not in a nested scroller, check whether the document’s measured height actually reaches it. Unusual layouts or content positioned outside the measured document bounds are possibilities to investigate, not a diagnosis that applies to every page.

3. Make sure the page has finished rendering

Some pages add images or sections after an initial load, after a delay, or in response to scrolling. If capture starts before that content appears, the screenshot can be incomplete even when full-page capture is enabled.

  1. Open the page and scroll through it manually, including areas that load as you approach them.
  2. Wait for the content and images you need to appear.
  3. Capture again after the page has settled.

Compare the new capture with the rendered page. If the missing content appears only after scrolling or waiting, focus on the page’s loading behavior and the timing of the capture.

4. Consider the size of an exceptionally tall capture

Very large screenshots can encounter implementation constraints. Current Chromium source contains a full-page guard that rejects a width or height at or above 128 × 1024 pixels (131,072 pixels). This is an implementation detail from Chromium’s moving main-branch source, not a universal usable-size limit for every Chrome version, operating system, or capture route.

An older Chromium issue described screenshot corruption past 8,192 pixels and is marked fixed. That historical figure should not be treated as a current general limit for Chrome.

If the page is exceptionally tall, capture it in sections or use a PDF as a practical fallback. Which size works depends on the particular browser version and capture path.

5. For automated captures, check device emulation

A specific Google Issue Tracker report describes a Puppeteer case involving captureBeyondViewport and navigator.maxTouchPoints. Consider it only if the problem occurs during automated capture with device emulation or touch-dependent page behavior. It is a reported edge case, not evidence that touch settings cause incomplete screenshots generally.

For that kind of setup, record the exact browser version and emulation settings, then compare a capture with the relevant emulation disabled. If the behavior changes, investigate the page’s touch-dependent behavior and the automation configuration rather than assuming every full-page capture is affected.

6. A practical troubleshooting order

  1. Identify the capture mode: use DevTools’ full-page option, or confirm automation captures beyond the viewport.
  2. Inspect any clip: remove or widen a clip that excludes the missing area.
  3. Scroll the page and its panels: determine whether the missing material sits in an independently scrolling element.
  4. Wait for content: allow delayed or scroll-triggered images and sections to render, then capture again.
  5. Reduce the capture size: for exceptionally tall pages, capture sections or try a PDF.
  6. Check automation details: if using device emulation, note the browser version and test whether touch-dependent behavior is involved.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot without setting up browser automation, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its capture process can accept consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs.
