A USB-C charger can charge slowly or stop because the adapter, cable and device are not negotiating a charging mode they all support; power is being shared through a hub or multiport adapter; the cable or port is damaged; or the device has reduced or paused charging to protect its battery from heat, cold or a charge limit. USB-C identifies the connector family, not a guaranteed charging speed or USB Power Delivery support.
The reliable way to diagnose the problem is to connect the device directly to a working wall outlet, use a known-good charging-capable cable and compatible adapter, remove hubs and other loads, and check the device’s temperature and battery settings. Exact wattage and protocol requirements depend on the model, so verify the manufacturer’s specifications before buying replacements.

USB-C does not guarantee fast charging
USB-C describes the physical connector and cable format. It does not, by itself, promise USB Power Delivery (USB PD), a particular wattage or even that a cable is intended for charging. The USB Implementers Forum says power and performance capabilities vary among USB Type-C products, so the device and accessory specifications must be checked together (USB-IF product and packaging guidelines, March 20, 2023).

- Adapter: supplies one or more voltage and current profiles, sometimes using USB PD or another device-specific protocol.
- Cable: must be wired for charging and rated for the current or power the setup requests.
- Device: chooses how much power to accept. A higher-rated adapter does not force a phone or computer to take more power than it is designed to use.
If any component supports only a lower mode, the system falls back to that mode. If communication is intermittent or a safety condition is detected, charging may become very slow or stop altogether.
The most common reasons charging is slow or stops
The adapter is underpowered or incompatible
An adapter may have a USB-C socket but lack the charging protocol or output profile your device expects. A computer port, vehicle socket, monitor, travel adapter or small phone adapter can provide less power than a laptop or tablet needs. For supported iPhone models, Apple recommends a USB-C Power Delivery adapter for faster wired charging; Google likewise says Pixel charging speed varies by phone model and adapter capability (Apple’s iPhone charge-speed guidance; Google Pixel charging troubleshooting).
When the adapter cannot offer a usable profile, the device may display a slow-charger warning, charge only while idle, or show no increase in battery level if its power use exceeds the adapter’s output.

Not every USB-C cable is equivalent. Some are designed primarily for data and may not charge a particular computer. Apple specifically notes that some USB-C cables support data transfer but do not charge a Mac laptop (Apple’s Mac USB-C adapter troubleshooting). Google warns that a damaged or unsupported cable or adapter can produce very slow charging or no charging at all (Google Pixel Help).

A cable that works only when bent, twisted or held at a particular angle has an intermittent connection. Stop using it rather than repeatedly repositioning it; movement can worsen damage or create heat at the connector.
Power is being shared through a hub or multiport charger
A hub, dock, display, computer port or multiport wall charger may divide its available output among several ports. The device can therefore receive less power after another phone, drive or accessory is connected. Apple documents reduced maximum output when multiple ports or connected devices share an adapter (Apple iPhone charge-speed guidance).
Testing the same device and cable from one dedicated wall-charger port removes this variable. If charging becomes normal, the original charger or hub is power-limited rather than necessarily defective.
The device is too hot or too cold
Battery-management software can reduce current or pause charging when the device, battery or adapter reaches an unsafe temperature. Apple says an iPhone may put charging on hold temporarily in extreme temperatures; its guidance lists 0 °C to 35 °C as the recommended ambient charging range (Apple’s thermally limited charging guide).

Heat can come from direct sun, a hot vehicle, a thick case, demanding games or video calls, a warm adapter or poor ventilation. Cold conditions can also trigger a pause. Charging normally resumes after the device returns to its safe operating range.
Normal battery-protection limits are active
Charging often slows near the device’s upper charge level. Battery-health features may hold the battery at a chosen limit or delay the final portion of a charge to reduce long-term wear. That behavior is different from a failed charger. Check the battery settings and any configured charge limit before replacing hardware.
The device is using as much power as it receives
A navigation session, game, camera recording, hotspot, large download or operating-system update can consume most of the incoming power. The battery percentage may rise very slowly or remain unchanged even though the device is technically charging. Close demanding apps, reduce screen brightness and retest while the device is idle.
The outlet, port or connection is faulty
A loose wall socket, partially inserted plug, lint in the USB-C port or a connector that does not seat firmly can interrupt charging. A port contaminated with debris may make contact only intermittently. Do not force the plug or insert metal objects into the port.

Diagnose the problem in this order
- Use a known-working outlet. Plug the adapter directly into a wall socket. Test that socket with another appliance or device if there is no charging indication.
- Reseat both ends. Disconnect and reconnect the cable at the adapter and device, ensuring each connector is fully inserted. Remove cases or accessories that prevent a firm fit.
- Bypass shared power. Disconnect hubs, docks, monitors, car adapters and other devices. Connect the device directly to one dedicated charger port.
- Swap the cable. Try a known-good USB-C cable explicitly intended for charging and suitable for the device’s required power. If charging changes when the original cable is moved, discontinue using it.
- Swap the adapter. Test a compatible adapter known to support the device’s charging standard and required output. Keep the cable constant during this test so only one variable changes.
- Reduce the device’s load. Stop demanding apps, lock the screen and wait several minutes. A rising battery percentage under light use indicates that the previous load was consuming the available power.
- Check temperature. Move a hot device out of direct sun or a hot car and let it cool in a ventilated room. If it is very cold, let it warm gradually indoors. Do not cover a warm adapter.
- Read the status message. Look for labels such as “Slow Charger,” “Charging on Hold” or an incompatible-accessory warning. These messages can identify a power, temperature or accessory limitation.
- Inspect without damaging the port. Use a light to look for visible lint, bent contacts or corrosion. Do not probe the port with metal or liquid.
- Restart and retest. A restart can clear a temporary software or accessory-detection fault. If the known-good setup still fails, arrange manufacturer or qualified repair support.
What the device’s warning can mean
“Slow Charger” or similar wording
This generally means the adapter or connection is delivering less power than the device can use or expects. It does not automatically mean the cable is unsafe. Confirm the adapter’s supported protocol and output, then test a charging-rated cable directly from a wall outlet.
“Charging on Hold”
On supported iPhone software, this can indicate a temperature-protection pause. Remove the device from heat or cold and wait for it to return to a normal range. Apple describes the condition as temporary while extreme temperatures are present (Apple Support).
Incompatible or unsupported accessory
Such a warning can result from a damaged cable, a non-compliant adapter, debris or a connector that is not making reliable contact. Test a different compatible cable and adapter separately; do not continue using an accessory that becomes abnormally hot or shows physical damage.
How temperature affects charging
Charging lithium-ion batteries generates heat, and high-current charging adds more. Protection systems may lower current before pausing entirely. To restore normal charging:

- Move the device out of direct sunlight and away from a heater or hot vehicle.
- Remove a thick case temporarily if it is trapping heat.
- Stop games, camera recording, navigation and other intensive tasks.
- Place the adapter where air can circulate; never cover it with bedding or clothing.
- Let a cold device warm naturally indoors instead of applying a heater or hot air.
If an adapter repeatedly becomes too hot to handle, smells burnt, buzzes, has melted plastic or shows other damage, unplug it and replace it. Apple notes that an adapter may shut off when it becomes too hot (Apple Mac USB-C adapter troubleshooting).
Choosing a replacement charger or cable
Buy by compatibility, not by the largest number printed on the box. Use the exact phone, tablet or computer model to check the manufacturer’s supported charging protocol and recommended output.
| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Charging standard | USB Power Delivery or the model’s specified protocol | An adapter with a USB-C socket may still lack the mode the device can use. |
| Output | Voltage, current and maximum wattage listed for the exact device | The device controls intake; excess adapter capacity does not guarantee faster charging. |
| Cable rating | Charging-current or power rating and a clear statement that it supports charging | A data-focused, damaged or low-rated cable can limit power or disconnect. |
| Port allocation | Whether the adapter shares output when more than one port is occupied | Connecting another device can reduce the power available to the first one. |
| Physical condition | Firm fit, intact insulation and no abnormal heat, corrosion or looseness | Damage can cause intermittent charging and safety hazards. |
For example, an adapter suitable for one phone may not meet a laptop’s requirements, while a laptop-class adapter may work safely with a phone that requests less power. The model-specific documentation determines the appropriate choice; there is no universal wattage for all USB-C devices.
When a slow charge is normal
A gradual increase can be expected when the battery is nearly full, a charge-protection limit is active, the screen and processor are busy, or the device is warm. Compare behavior under controlled conditions: direct wall power, a known-good cable, the screen off and a normal room temperature. If the battery then rises steadily, the earlier slowdown was likely a normal limit or environmental condition.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek service
- The port is physically loose, bent, corroded or visibly damaged.
- Charging works only when the cable is held at an angle.
- A known-good compatible adapter and cable fail on the same device.
- The adapter or connector becomes unusually hot, smokes, smells burnt or shows melting.
- The device repeatedly stops charging after cleaning the setup and returning it to a normal temperature.
Unplug damaged equipment. Do not open an adapter or insert tools into a charging port. Contact the device manufacturer or a qualified repair provider for inspection, especially when the fault follows the device rather than the charger.
Official guidance and the key distinction
“Your iPhone might put charging on hold temporarily while in extreme temperature conditions.”
This statement appears in Apple’s official iPhone charge-speed guidance (Apple Support, published March 16, 2026) and illustrates why a pause is not always a hardware failure. USB-C is the connector; the adapter’s protocol, the cable’s capability, the device’s power demand and its safety controls determine the actual charging result.
