Why does a 1 TB SSD show as 931 GB in Windows?

A 1 TB SSD usually appears as about 931 GB in Windows because the drive maker and Windows are using different unit conventions. The label’s 1 TB means 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows commonly displays those same bytes in binary-sized units of 1,073,741,824 bytes, producing approximately 931.3 of those units, usually rounded to 931 GB. The apparent shortfall is normally a conversion issue, not storage that has disappeared.

What “1 TB” means on an SSD label

Storage manufacturers describe a 1 TB drive using decimal capacity. In that convention:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • 1 terabyte (TB) = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes.
  • 1 TB = 1,000 decimal gigabytes (GB).

That number describes the drive’s byte capacity before Windows presents it through its own storage tools. The label is not promising that every operating-system screen will print the number “1,000 GB.” It is identifying how many bytes the device contains under the decimal convention.

This practice is standard in storage specifications. Seagate’s capacity guidance and Kingston’s Flash Memory Guide both use decimal values when explaining drive labels. The important value to preserve when checking a disk is the exact byte count, not just the rounded number followed by “GB.”

How 1,000,000,000,000 bytes becomes about 931 GB

Windows commonly expresses storage using a binary-sized unit. A binary gibibyte (GiB) contains 230 bytes:

230 = 1,073,741,824 bytes.

To convert the decimal capacity on the label into that binary-sized quantity, divide the bytes in the drive by the bytes in one binary unit:

1,000,000,000,000 ÷ 1,073,741,824 ≈ 931.3.

Rounded for a user-facing display, that becomes approximately 931 GB. Kingston presents this same worked calculation for a nominal 1 TB device, and Seagate’s capacity table gives the equivalent example of a 1 TB (1,000 GB) label appearing as 931 GB in Windows.

What is being measured Value Meaning
Drive label 1 TB 1,000,000,000,000 decimal bytes
Binary-sized unit 1,073,741,824 bytes 230 bytes per GiB
Converted display Approximately 931.3 Usually rounded to 931 GB in Windows

Nothing in that calculation removes bytes from the SSD. It changes the size of the unit used to describe the same byte total. Calling the result “69 GB missing” compares a decimal number with a binary-sized number as though they were identical units, which they are not.

GB and GiB: the terminology Windows makes confusing

Technically, the binary unit in the calculation is a gibibyte, abbreviated GiB, rather than a decimal gigabyte. A decimal gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes; a gibibyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes. Because many operating-system interfaces and support pages use “GB” as a familiar shorthand, Windows users often see “931 GB” even when the underlying arithmetic is binary.

For practical troubleshooting, read the number together with the unit convention used by the utility. If a tool reports the exact byte count, that count lets you compare the physical device with the label without relying on ambiguous “GB” wording.

What the 931 GB figure does—and does not—tell you

A reading near 931 for a drive sold as 1 TB is consistent with the normal decimal-to-binary conversion. By itself, it does not show that the SSD is defective, counterfeit, worn out, or losing data. It also does not indicate that Windows has deleted a fixed block of storage.

The figure may describe the capacity of the whole physical device, or it may describe a partition that Windows can currently use. Those are different measurements. A physical disk can contain one or more partitions, while a formatted partition is the space exposed for files. Formatting and other drive functions can consume some of the capacity listed by the manufacturer, so a usable-space figure can be lower than the whole-disk total.

That distinction matters when someone reports a number below 931. The conversion explains the expected whole-device scale; it does not automatically explain every partition or free-space reading.

Compare the right numbers before troubleshooting

Use three comparison points rather than treating every Windows capacity screen as equivalent:

Comparison Question to ask Why it matters
Exact bytes How many bytes does the device or utility report? Bytes avoid the decimal-versus-binary naming problem.
Display units Is the utility using decimal GB, binary-sized units, or a label that simply says GB? The same byte count produces different displayed numbers under different conventions.
Scope Is the number for the entire physical disk, a partition, or available free space? Partitions and formatting can make usable space lower than total device capacity.

A reliable check records all three. For example, a physical-disk total close to 1,000,000,000,000 bytes and a Windows display near 931 are mutually consistent. A partition’s available-space number is not a substitute for the physical disk’s total.

Step-by-step: check whether your 1 TB reading is normal

  1. Identify the measurement’s scope. Open a Windows storage utility that lists physical disks and partitions. Determine whether the displayed value belongs to the entire SSD, one partition, or only free space inside that partition.
  2. Record the exact byte capacity. If the utility exposes a byte count, write it down rather than copying only the rounded GB figure. The expected decimal label for a 1 TB drive is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes.
  3. Note the unit convention. Check whether the utility identifies decimal units, binary-sized units, or simply uses “GB” without saying which convention it follows.
  4. Compare the whole-disk total with the conversion. A total that converts to roughly 931 binary-sized units matches the normal explanation for a nominal 1 TB drive.
  5. Inspect the partition layout. If the physical-disk total is appropriate but the partition or usable-space figure is lower, check how the disk is divided and which volume you are viewing. Do not compare free space with the manufacturer’s total capacity.
  6. Verify the device identity. Make sure the disk utility is showing the SSD you intend to check, especially when a computer has more than one storage device. Record the model and the capacity shown for that physical disk.
  7. Investigate only a material whole-disk discrepancy. If the entire device reports substantially fewer bytes than expected—not merely about 931 in a binary-sized display—then the unit conversion alone is not a sufficient explanation.

Why a usable partition can be smaller than 931 GB

The 931 figure is the approximate result of expressing the labeled byte capacity in binary-sized units. A formatted volume is a separate layer. Partitioning determines how the physical disk is divided, and formatting prepares a selected partition for file storage. Manufacturer guidance notes that formatting and other functions can use some of the listed capacity.

Consequently, these readings should not be treated as interchangeable:

  • Manufacturer capacity: the decimal byte capacity advertised for the device.
  • Whole-disk capacity: the total reported for the physical SSD by a storage utility.
  • Partition capacity: the size assigned to a particular volume.
  • Available space: the portion of that volume currently free for files.

A lower available-space number can therefore reflect the partition and formatting state rather than a problem with the SSD’s physical byte count. The remedy is to compare the same scope on both sides of the comparison.

When a lower number deserves investigation

Do not use the 931 explanation as a blanket answer for every capacity discrepancy. It accounts for the normal unit conversion from 1,000,000,000,000 bytes to approximately 931 binary-sized units. It does not establish why a particular computer might show a materially lower whole-device total.

Investigate further when:

  • The physical disk’s exact byte count is materially below the expected decimal capacity.
  • The utility is showing a partition or usable-space figure, but it is being compared with the drive’s advertised total.
  • The disk layout contains space that is not part of the partition being measured.
  • The displayed capacity belongs to a different device than the SSD named on the product label.

Start by checking the reported bytes, then the partition layout and device identification. Those checks separate a display convention from a storage-layout or device-reporting issue. The capacity examples from Seagate and Kingston explain the conversion; they do not diagnose an individual SSD.

Common mistakes to avoid

Calling the difference physically missing

The arithmetic compares decimal terabytes with binary-sized gigabytes. Describing the difference as storage that Windows removed leads to the wrong diagnosis.

Comparing total capacity with free space

A nearly empty partition and a full physical disk are not the same measurement. Confirm whether a number refers to total disk capacity, partition size, or currently available space.

Assuming every “GB” label uses the same definition

Some interfaces retain the familiar GB label while using binary-sized arithmetic. Read the utility’s documentation or inspect its exact byte count where possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring a large whole-disk discrepancy

A result near 931 is expected for the conversion described here. A substantially smaller physical-disk byte total requires separate checking rather than being dismissed as normal rounding.

Examples beyond the 1 TB case

The same convention explains why other labeled capacities appear smaller in Windows. Seagate’s support documentation gives the example of a 500 GB drive appearing as 465 GB. The number changes because the decimal byte total changes; the conversion principle does not.

For any labeled capacity, use this method:

  1. Convert the label to decimal bytes.
  2. Divide by 1,073,741,824 to express it in binary-sized gigabytes.
  3. Compare the result with the whole-disk reading, not with a partition’s free space.

This approach works without guessing whether a rounded display is using “GB” in the strict decimal sense or as a Windows shorthand for GiB.

Bottom line for a 1 TB SSD showing 931 GB

About 931 GB is the expected Windows presentation of a 1 TB drive labeled as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. The calculation is 1,000,000,000,000 divided by 1,073,741,824, or approximately 931.3 binary-sized units. Check exact bytes and distinguish the whole physical disk from partitions and usable space before treating a lower reading as a fault.
