Video games have no single universal price. A game’s listed amount is a business decision for a particular title, edition, market, storefront and date. Publishers weigh expected value, playtime, replayability, multiplayer features, comparable games, customer expectations and planned promotions. Regional purchasing power, currency policy, platform rules, physical production and temporary sales then change what different players see. Two prices can therefore differ without either one being an error—or without the versions being equivalent.
Price is set for a game and a market, not just for a file
A publisher does not price every game with one industry formula. Steamworks’ guidance to developers says they should consider the value of the experience, comparable products, customer expectations, playtime, replayability, multiplayer, Early Access and future promotions. Those are pricing inputs, not a promise that every publisher uses the same weighting.

Expected value and audience expectations
A long role-playing game may be positioned differently from a short narrative title. A multiplayer game may be priced with its continuing player base and planned updates in mind, while an Early Access release may launch at a level that reflects its unfinished state and the developer’s roadmap. Comparable games matter because customers judge a new release against other games they could buy at the same time.
None of this means a higher development budget automatically produces a higher retail price. A large budget can be recovered through a lower launch price, a higher price, subscriptions, downloadable content or a large sales volume. Conversely, a small team can charge more if it believes the audience will pay for a distinctive experience. Retail price measures a publisher’s market strategy, not a transparent invoice for development costs.

Different products can share a title
Before comparing amounts, identify what is actually being sold. Stores commonly separate a full game, deluxe or ultimate edition, bundle, expansion, downloadable content, in-game purchase and recurring subscription. Steam’s developer documentation lists these as distinct business models. A base game beside a season pass is not a like-for-like comparison, even when both listings use the same title.
Why the same game costs more or less in another country
A foreign price is not necessarily today’s exchange-rate conversion. Developers can enter prices for individual currencies and region groups, or use a platform’s recommendation and conversion tools. Steamworks documentation describes three approaches: exchange-rate conversion, purchasing-power conversion and a multi-variable method that considers local purchasing power, comparable entertainment costs and exchange rates. It supports 37 currencies across four region groups, but the developer still chooses the prices. Steam states that the amounts entered for each currency and region group are up to the developer.
Purchasing power changes the target price
If a publisher converted a United States price directly into every currency, the result could be unaffordable in markets where wages and local entertainment prices are lower. A purchasing-power or multi-variable approach can set a different amount that is intended to fit local spending conditions. That amount may be higher or lower than a live foreign-exchange conversion, and it can remain unchanged when exchange rates move.

Automatic conversion and market overrides
Microsoft’s game-publishing documentation describes a similar distinction. When a publisher has not configured a market-specific price, Microsoft Store can convert a base price into local currency. Publishers may override that result for particular markets. Microsoft also says exchange-rate updates do not automatically rewrite existing wholesale or suggested retail prices, so a displayed local amount can lag behind current currency movements.
Recommendations are not mandatory prices
Epic Games Store says its suggested regional prices are based on regional exchange rates, local purchasing power and industry experience. Epic supports regional pricing in more than 190 countries and over 30 territories. Those figures describe the store’s coverage and recommendation system, not a guarantee that every game is sold in every listed market or that every publisher accepts the suggestion.
Why prices differ between Steam, consoles and other stores
Each storefront can have its own pricing matrix, currency handling, promotion calendar and discount restrictions. Dovetail Games’ customer-support guidance notes that platform pricing matrices do not align exactly, which can create small regular-price differences for the same game. Microsoft also documents market-specific overrides. A publisher may therefore set one amount on a console store, another on a PC store and a third for a physical retail channel.

Platform rules affect discounts as well as regular prices. A platform holder can restrict when a product may be discounted, require advance scheduling or decline to make a sale available in a particular region. Dovetail says a sale can be absent from one platform or market at the platform holder’s request. The precise reason for a discrepancy has to be checked against the current listings and the publisher’s terms; there is no universal rule that one platform is always cheaper.

Packaging, manufacturing, shipping and retail distribution can add costs to a physical copy, but digital is not automatically cheaper. Publishers may price formats differently for strategic reasons, and retail stores can set their own selling prices.
A current Nintendo Switch 2 example
Nintendo says that, beginning in May 2026, new Nintendo-published digital titles exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 will have a different manufacturer’s suggested retail price from their physical versions. The policy begins with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. Nintendo attributes the distinction to the different costs of producing and distributing each format, while saying the packaged and digital games provide the same experiences. Retail partners set their own prices, and Nintendo says individual title prices may vary.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
This is a specific Nintendo policy for a defined console, publisher and release period. It should not be generalized to every Nintendo game, every Switch 2 title, other platforms or every country. A physical copy can be cheaper during a retailer clearance sale, while a digital version can be cheaper during a storefront promotion.
Why a sale price changes the comparison
A temporary sale is a different pricing state from a regular list price. Stores plan promotions on separate calendars, and Dovetail says those calendars do not always align across platforms. Availability can also vary by supported region. A game discounted on one store may remain at its regular amount elsewhere, or the same sale may begin and end on different dates.

Steamworks documentation also describes timing considerations around launch discounts and price increases. Developers have future opportunities to discount, but release timing and certain price changes can affect when a promotion is permitted. When comparing two amounts, record the date and check whether either listing is promotional rather than treating a temporary price as the permanent value.

Use this checklist before deciding that one listing is cheaper
| Comparison point | What to verify | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Title and content | Base game, deluxe edition, bundle, expansion, subscription or in-game purchase | Different content carries different prices. |
| Platform and store | Console store, PC storefront or physical retailer | Pricing matrices, overrides and discount rules differ. |
| Region and currency | Same country, currency and account market | Prices may be entered locally or converted using different methods. |
| Format | Packaged disc or cartridge versus digital entitlement | Production and distribution costs can differ, but there is no fixed direction. |
| Timing | Regular price, launch offer or time-limited sale | Promotions follow store calendars and may not be available everywhere. |
| Displayed total | Whether local tax or other charges are included in the shown amount | Storefront display conventions can make two headline numbers look different. |
A practical method for investigating a price gap
- Open both listings in the same market. Confirm that the account country, currency and storefront region are identical. A price viewed while signed out can differ from the amount shown after the store detects an account market.
- Match the edition and included content. Read the product description for bonus items, expansions, season passes, early-access status and multiplayer access. Do not compare a bundle with a base game.
- Match the format. Check whether one amount is for a physical package and the other for a digital license. For a physical copy, note whether the displayed figure is from a retailer whose price can change independently.
- Check the sale label and end date. Record the regular price, discount percentage if shown and the promotion’s closing date. A sale on one platform may not have started on another.
- Compare the same platform policy. If the regular prices still differ, look for a publisher-set market override, a platform-specific pricing matrix or a stated regional policy. Microsoft’s documentation confirms that market overrides are possible, while Steam places currency and region prices under the developer’s control.
- Recheck at checkout. Verify the final amount, currency and any tax-display difference before concluding that one purchase is cheaper. Store pages can show a headline price that is not the final total.
Live-service purchases can follow separate regional experiments
Prices for virtual items do not have to follow the price of the boxed or downloadable game. A publisher can test different amounts for gems, passes or other in-game items while leaving the game’s purchase price unchanged. Supercell announced on September 30, 2025, that it would begin testing changes to Clash Royale in-game purchases, with a first rollout to selected markets in early October 2025 and additional markets later. That announcement was a dated company test, not evidence that the same coverage or prices remain in effect everywhere.
What a price difference does—and does not—tell you
- It does show a market decision. The publisher or platform selected an amount for a particular product, currency and sales channel.
- It does not reveal the development budget. Retail prices also reflect positioning, competition, audience expectations and promotion plans.
- It does not prove digital should be cheaper. Format costs, platform agreements, retailer pricing and temporary discounts can point in either direction.
- It does not prove a currency conversion was wrong. Purchasing-power methods and manually entered regional prices are intentionally different from a live exchange-rate calculation.
- It does not make platform coverage statistics an industry average. Steam’s 37 currencies and four region groups and Epic’s more than 190 countries and over 30 territories describe those services, not the whole game market.
Illustrative scenarios
Same title, different edition
A standard edition and a deluxe bundle can appear side by side with the same release date. The higher amount buys additional content, so the difference is about scope rather than geography.
Same edition, different country
A developer may enter a lower local price after considering purchasing power and comparable entertainment costs. Converting that amount back into another currency can make it look unusually low or high even when the publisher followed its regional policy.
Same edition, different platform
One platform may be running a scheduled promotion while another is at regular price. If both are outside a sale, their platform matrices or a publisher’s market override can still produce a small difference.
Same game, physical versus digital
A retailer’s physical discount can undercut a digital list price, while a digital storefront sale can reverse the result the following week. The format alone does not determine the winner.
Bottom line
Video-game prices differ because publishers and platform holders price a specific product for a specific market and moment. Value and content establish the starting position; regional purchasing power and currency methods adapt it; storefront rules, format costs and sales timing move it again. To make a fair comparison, match the edition, platform, region, format and date before judging which listing is actually cheaper.
