Some people dislike kissing because one or more parts of the experience—taste, breath, scent, saliva, wetness, pressure, or the style of contact—feel unpleasant or overwhelming. Others do not find mouth-to-mouth kissing meaningful because their cultural norms, relationship history, or personal preferences point elsewhere. Kissing is widespread but not universal, and no study establishes one cause or a prevalence rate for disliking it. A dislike by itself does not prove a lack of affection, romantic attraction, or relationship health.
What “disliking kissing” can mean
The phrase covers several different experiences. Someone may dislike all mouth-to-mouth contact, only open-mouth kissing, kissing with a particular partner, kissing in public, or kissing at a particular point in a relationship. Another person may enjoy brief kisses but find prolonged contact tiring or intrusive. These distinctions matter because a reaction to taste or moisture is not the same as a boundary about intimacy or a cultural preference.

Kissing also combines several sensory signals at once. A person can respond to the smell of breath, the taste of lips or skin, body scent, saliva, pressure, temperature, wetness, and the other person’s technique. The same contact can be pleasant in one setting and unwelcome in another. A preference is not a diagnosis, and a single behavior cannot reveal what someone feels about a partner.
Sensory reasons a kiss may feel unpleasant
Taste, breath, and scent
A 2019 cross-cultural study separated sensory judgments such as the pleasantness of breath, body scent, and the taste of lips or skin from other aspects of kissing. That framework explains why a person might object to a flavor or odor while being comfortable with other kinds of affection. Food, drink, smoking, oral-care products, illness, or simply an individual’s natural scent can change the experience, but the study did not show that any one of these sensations causes a particular person to dislike kissing. See the study’s sensory measures in Watkins and colleagues’ 2019 article.

Wetness, saliva, and close contact
Some people describe kissing as too wet, sticky, or physically close. Saliva can be the salient feature, while others notice pressure, facial contact, or the feeling of being unable to control the pace. These are descriptions of an individual’s experience, not evidence of a disorder. Informal discussions often use phrases such as “sensory issues” or “too wet,” but those anecdotes cannot tell us how common a reaction is or what causes it.
Technique, intensity, and arousal
The same study also measured wetness, physical contact, arousal, and similarity of technique as related dimensions. Differences in rhythm, tongue use, pressure, duration, or synchronization may make a kiss feel mismatched. Someone can therefore dislike a particular style without disliking every form of kissing. Asking what specifically feels wrong is more useful than assuming the person is generally avoidant.
Cultural norms shape whether kissing feels expected
Mouth-to-mouth kissing is globally familiar but not a universal human practice. Watkins and colleagues examined kissing behavior and attitudes across 13 countries on six continents. In their sample, kissing was valued more in established relationships than during courtship, and kissing frequency across romantic relationships was associated with relative income inequality. Those are population-level patterns, not rules for individuals; they cannot predict what one person will want.

Cultural learning can affect what a kiss is supposed to communicate: romance, commitment, greeting, sexual interest, or nothing important. If a person was not taught to treat kissing as a normal sign of closeness, declining it may feel ordinary rather than like a rejection. Conversely, someone raised with a strong expectation that romantic partners kiss may experience a refusal as emotionally significant. Neither response is automatically more authentic or healthier.
Personal and relationship context
Life experience is not the same as dislike
A 2018 study of 738 first-year university students in the United States found that 14.2% had never kissed a partner on the lips. Never having kissed was associated with being less likely to be in a romantic relationship, lower extraversion, and other personal or contextual characteristics. The measured outcome was lifetime kissing status, not an opinion that kissing feels bad. It cannot explain why a particular person avoids kissing. Details are reported by Lefkowitz, Wesche, and Leavitt.
Partner, setting, and meaning
Comfort can depend on trust, privacy, timing, relationship status, and whether a person feels pressured. A person might enjoy kissing a long-term partner but not a new date, or prefer affection that does not involve the mouth. A 2021 cross-cultural study of affective interpersonal touch found that touch was most prevalent in relationships with partners and children in its sample and varied by context. It did not directly measure dislike of kissing, but it supports treating touch preferences as relational and culturally situated. See the study’s PubMed record.

Preference can remain stable—or change
Some people have always disliked kissing; others lose interest temporarily or become more comfortable with a particular person or style. There is no requirement to “graduate” to kissing. A preference can be communicated and respected even when it differs from a partner’s preference.
Where disgust fits—and where it does not
Saliva and close face-to-face contact can activate pathogen-related or contamination concerns for some people. A review of disgust variation discusses cues such as saliva but concludes that several proposed explanations for why people differ in disgust sensitivity are not supported by existing data. The review therefore does not justify saying that someone avoids kissing because they fear germs unless that person says so. Nor does a disgust response indicate a disorder. The review is available at Tybur and colleagues (2018).
It is also unsafe to infer a hidden cause from a refusal. Disliking kissing alone does not establish trauma, fear of intimacy, lack of attraction, neurodivergence, poor hygiene, or a problem in the relationship. Those possibilities require the person’s own account and, where appropriate, qualified support.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
| Question | What the cited studies measured | What they do not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Could a sensation be off-putting? | Breath, body scent, lip or skin taste, wetness, contact, arousal, and similarity of technique. | That one sensation causes any individual’s dislike. |
| Is kissing culturally universal? | Behavior and attitudes in 13 countries on six continents; an older touch-avoidance survey of 248 participants in four broad regional groups. | A current ranking of cultures or a prediction about an individual. |
| How many people dislike kissing? | Adjacent outcomes such as never having kissed, touch avoidance, and disgust variation. | A representative prevalence rate for disliking kissing or a dominant cause. |
| Does not kissing indicate low attraction? | Associations between never having kissed and relationship status, extraversion, and other characteristics in 738 U.S. university students. | Why a particular person avoids kissing or how they feel about a partner. |
Because these studies examine different constructs, their percentages and group patterns should not be combined into a single explanation. In particular, the 14.2% figure describes students who had never kissed a partner on the lips; it is not a measure of people who dislike kissing.
How to handle a kissing preference in real life
Identify the exact boundary
Before discussing it with a partner, decide what you are declining: all kissing, tongue kissing, long kisses, kissing after certain foods or drinks, kissing in public, or kissing right now. Specific language prevents a broad “you never want intimacy” interpretation.
State it plainly and without apology
A short statement such as “I do not enjoy open-mouth kissing, but I like holding hands and cuddling” communicates both a limit and possible alternatives. You do not need to provide a medical explanation or debate whether your preference is reasonable.
Best Value
Ask, do not negotiate past consent
A partner can explain what kissing means to them, and both people can decide whether other forms of affection meet their needs. Consent must be ongoing; agreeing once does not create an obligation later. Repeated pressure, guilt, or attempts to surprise someone into kissing are boundary violations, not communication problems to solve with better technique.
Consider practical adjustments only if you want them
If the issue is a removable sensory detail, partners can experiment with shorter kisses, less pressure, different timing, or avoiding a disliked flavor. Stop if the experience remains unwanted. No technique can make an undesired form of contact mandatory.
Get support for distress, pain, or coercion
If kissing causes significant distress, physical pain, panic, or conflict that you want help resolving, a licensed mental-health or medical professional can listen to your account without assuming a diagnosis. Seek immediate support if anyone is coercing or threatening you. Professional help is about your wellbeing and choices, not proving that you should like kissing.
The most accurate answer
People dislike kissing for different combinations of sensory response, learned norms, and personal or relationship context. Existing studies document these dimensions but do not rank them, explain every individual case, or provide a population estimate. The reliable starting point is the person’s own description of what feels unpleasant and what forms of closeness they do—or do not—want.
