People use Neovim for its keyboard-centered, modal editing model and its scope for customization. It combines Vim-style editing with Lua, APIs, asynchronous jobs, an embedded terminal, and compatibility with many Vim plugins. Those features can suit people who want an editor they can shape around their workflow—but they do not prove Neovim makes everyone faster.
What makes Neovim appealing?
Editing through actions and motions
Neovim keeps Vim’s modal model: users switch between modes and combine actions with motions to edit text. That approach can appeal to people who prefer keyboard-centered editing and customizable key bindings. One community commenter described the draw as “The vim modal editing model (actions + motions),” but that is an individual account, not evidence of a universal preference or productivity gain.

An editor designed to be extended
Neovim describes itself as a Vim-based editor engineered for extensibility and usability. Its stated goals include making the editor highly extensible and allowing advanced user interfaces without changing the core. Users who want to adapt their editor, or developers who want to build on it, may value that design.

The project identifies a first-class Lua interface as a goal, and its README describes API access from many programming languages. These are ways to extend or connect Neovim; ordinary editing does not require users to write Lua. The README also lists asynchronous job control and an embedded, scriptable terminal emulator, which can support workflows that bring editing and other tools together. The project materials describe these capabilities, but do not establish that they are faster or more convenient than alternatives.

Can Vim users switch to Neovim easily?
Neovim is a Vim fork and says it maintains compatibility with Vim’s editor and Vimscript features where possible, except Vim9script. It also describes compatibility with most Vim plugins. This gives existing Vim users a foundation for trying Neovim, but it is not a guarantee that every Vim feature, configuration, or plugin will work unchanged.

What are the tradeoffs?
Customization can take time: users may need to choose settings and plugins, learn how they work, and maintain or debug them. The effort depends on how much a person customizes, and the project sources do not quantify it. Someone content with a basic setup may take on less maintenance than someone building a heavily tailored environment.

Neovim’s FAQ says the stable release is more predictable, while the pre-release branch stages changes aggressively and can occasionally break workflows. People who prioritize predictability can use the stable release; those who choose pre-release should be prepared for changes to disrupt their setup.

- Consider the editing model: Do you want to learn modal, keyboard-centered editing, or do you prefer another interaction style?
- Consider customization: Do you want to adapt your editor or connect it to other tools, and are you willing to manage the configuration?
- Consider Vim continuity: Would Vim compatibility help you carry over familiar features or plugins, while accepting that compatibility is not complete?
- Consider maintenance: How much time do you want to spend selecting, learning, and debugging settings and plugins?
These are practical decision points drawn from Neovim’s documented features and one illustrative community comment, not results from a representative survey. The available sources provide no named statistic for adoption, user motivations, or productivity, so claims that Neovim makes people universally faster are not established.
