A chatbot that answers contingently, uses a personal tone or appears to show emotion can prompt politeness, trust, disclosure and social evaluation—even when the user knows a machine is responding. This is a social response, not proof that the user believes the system is human or conscious.
Anthropomorphism also varies by person and situation. Desire for social connection, the chatbot’s design, the conversation’s purpose and the communication mode all matter. Current studies do not show that chatbots inevitably replace relationships or that social use is harmless for everyone; effects are mixed and bounded by the platform, sample, duration and method studied.

Social behavior does not require mistaking a machine for a person
The main explanation comes from two related ideas in media psychology: Computers Are Social Actors (CASA) and the Media Equation. Both describe how people apply familiar social rules to computers and media when those systems provide social cues. A conversational interface can therefore invite a greeting, a thank-you, a confession or an opinion about its “personality” without the user making a literal judgment that a human is present.

These reactions are often automatic and practical. Saying “please” may be a learned conversational habit; waiting for a reply may reflect the turn-taking structure of dialogue; judging a response as rude or reassuring uses the same standards applied to a human speaker. The behavior shows that the interaction is being processed socially, not that the user has concluded the software has a mind.

What anthropomorphism means in this context
Anthropomorphism is attributing humanlike qualities, intentions or feelings to a nonhuman system. Someone might say that a chatbot is “trying to help,” “doesn’t understand” or “sounds nervous.” Such language can be a convenient description of behavior. It does not by itself establish a belief that the system is alive, self-aware or capable of human experience.
A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis found that results about anthropomorphic cues and rapport are mixed across studies. The broader conclusion is that humanlike presentation can shape responses, but it does not determine them in every interaction. Read the review in Communications Psychology.
Which chatbot cues make social interpretations more likely?
People are especially likely to use social expectations when a system behaves in ways associated with a conversation partner. The cues need not be visually realistic; language and timing can be enough.
Contingent, personal replies
A response that directly addresses what someone just said feels more like participation than a static search result. First-person wording, questions about the user, memory of earlier turns and a consistent conversational style can strengthen that impression. These features make the exchange easier to navigate, but they can also make the system’s output feel intentional even when it is generated from statistical patterns and programmed instructions.
Apparent emotion and politeness
Expressions such as “I’m sorry,” “that sounds difficult” or “I’m excited to help” resemble the language people use to signal concern or enthusiasm. Users may answer politely because social etiquette is the easiest available script. They may also infer a stable disposition—friendly, judgmental, patient or evasive—from repeated wording.
Flattery and humanlike presentation
Eun-Ju Lee’s two 2010 experiments examined how interface humanlikeness and flattery affected responses. In one experiment, humanlike cartoon characters changed evaluations. In another, participants found a flattering computer more socially attractive but also became more suspicious of its claims; some negative effects disappeared when participants were given a secondary task. The work predates large language models, so it supports a general mechanism rather than a direct prediction about current chatbots. The original paper is available from Communication Research.

The result is not that a humanlike cue always persuades people. A cue can make a system seem pleasant while simultaneously making its praise look manipulative. Whether a user notices the cue, has time to scrutinize it and has a reason to distrust it changes the outcome.

Why some people anthropomorphize more than others
There is no established percentage of the population that treats chatbots as people. The available studies measure particular participants or interactions, not prevalence among everyone who uses conversational software.
Desire for social connection is one measured factor
A 2025 longitudinal randomized study by Rose E. Guingrich and Michael S. A. Graziano assigned 183 participants either to companion-chatbot text conversations or to word games. Participants completed their assigned activity for at least 10 minutes per day on 21 consecutive days. Those with a stronger desire for social connection anthropomorphized the chatbot more. Greater loneliness, by itself, was not associated with greater anthropomorphism in that study.
Participants who anthropomorphized the chatbot more also reported a greater effect of the interaction on their social life. That is an association in a three-week study, not evidence that anthropomorphism causes a particular long-term outcome. The study is published in the Proceedings of the AAAI/ACM Conference on AI, Ethics, and Society.
Purpose and expectations change the interaction
A person using a chatbot to format a spreadsheet has a different goal from someone asking for encouragement late at night. The same wording may be interpreted as efficient in one setting and caring in another. Expectations established by a companion-style product, a workplace assistant or an educational tutor also shape how much social meaning users attach to a reply.
Time pressure, attention and cognitive load matter as well. Lee’s experiments found that a secondary task moderated some reactions to flattery. When people are busy, they may rely more on conversational shortcuts—or may have less capacity to analyze a system’s claims carefully.

What studies show about relationships and well-being
Current evidence does not support a single verdict such as “chatbots improve social health” or “chatbots destroy relationships.” Different studies ask different questions, use different modes and observe different time spans.
Companion-chatbot study: no significant average change over 21 days
In the Guingrich and Graziano randomized study, average social health and relationship outcomes did not change significantly between the companion-chatbot and comparison groups over 21 days. At the individual level, however, people who anthropomorphized the chatbot more reported greater social impact. Those findings can coexist: a group average may remain stable while particular users experience a stronger effect.
The study’s design also sets limits. It involved 183 participants, a minimum 10-minute daily activity and a three-week window. It does not establish what happens after months of use, how results would differ with voice, or whether the same pattern applies to every chatbot user.

In a March 2025 report, OpenAI and MIT Media Lab combined automated analysis of nearly 40 million ChatGPT interactions with targeted surveys. They reported that affective interactions appeared only rarely in the analyzed conversations. A small subgroup of heavy Advanced Voice Mode users showed more emotionally expressive use.
The same report described a randomized controlled trial with nearly 1,000 participants using ChatGPT for four weeks. Outcomes differed by modality, duration, conversation type and user circumstances. The authors caution that the findings should not be generalized broadly: the work focused on ChatGPT, English-language conversations and U.S. participants, excluded people under 18 and had not yet been peer-reviewed when published. Details and methodological qualifications appear in the OpenAI and MIT Media Lab report.
Why these findings are not contradictory
The studies measure different things. One examines a companion-chatbot intervention and reported social effects; the other combines observational interaction data with a four-week ChatGPT trial. Their samples, products, modes and outcome measures differ. A rare emotionally expressive exchange in a large dataset does not describe every user, while a reported social impact among highly anthropomorphic participants does not prove population-wide harm.

How to tell a social response from a belief that the chatbot is human
Several ordinary behaviors indicate social framing without implying literal belief:
- Using greetings, thanks or apologies because those are normal conversation rules.
- Describing a response as kind, rude, funny or disappointing.
- Disclosing personal information because the interface feels nonjudgmental or available.
- Returning to a familiar conversation style or assigning the system a role such as tutor or coach.
- Feeling pleased by praise while still knowing that the system generates text algorithmically.
A stronger claim would require evidence that the person attributes consciousness, independent goals or human understanding to the system. The cited studies do not establish that belief. A user can maintain both ideas at once: “This is software” and “I should answer as if someone is listening.”

Social reactions are not automatically dangerous, but a few checks help keep expectations aligned with the technology.
Check the role you are assigning
Before relying on a chatbot for emotional support, identify whether you want brainstorming, reflection, companionship or a decision. A system can produce supportive language without possessing personal concern, memory in the human sense or responsibility for the outcome.
Watch for substitution, not just frequency
Time spent chatting is an incomplete measure. More useful questions are whether the interaction is displacing valued relationships, sleep, work or professional care, and whether you feel less able to cope without the system. The available studies do not provide a universal threshold at which use becomes harmful.

Verify consequential claims
Social trust can spill into factual trust. Check health, legal, financial, safety and relationship advice against qualified human sources before acting. Flattery or confident wording should not substitute for evidence.
What this means for chatbot designers and organizations
Designers should treat social cues as functional features with side effects, not as decoration. Personalization, memory, voice, emotional language and proactive prompts can improve usability while also increasing perceived intimacy. Clear role descriptions, visible uncertainty, easy access to human help and controls for memory can help users understand what the system can and cannot do.
Organizations evaluating a chatbot should distinguish task success from social impact. A system may be pleasant and efficient yet still encourage over-disclosure or misplaced confidence. Testing should include different user goals, levels of social need, attention conditions and communication modes rather than assuming one average user.

For the theoretical background, Byron Reeves and Clifford Nass’s book The Media Equation is a foundational discussion of why people apply human social rules to media and computers. It is useful for understanding the mechanism, while newer chatbot studies are needed to assess current models, voice interfaces and longer-term use.
The clearest answer
People treat AI chatbots like people because conversation activates social rules, and humanlike cues make those rules feel appropriate. Users do not need to believe a chatbot is human for the interaction to feel social. Individual motives—especially a desire for connection—plus interface design, attention, purpose and modality determine how strong the effect becomes. Evidence so far supports caution and nuance: social use can matter to particular users, but existing studies do not justify universal claims about either harm or benefit.
