People often prefer their reflection because it is the familiar, reversed version of their face, seen live as they move. A photograph is usually unreversed and freezes one viewpoint; if the camera is close, perspective can also make nearer features—such as the nose—look larger relative to features farther away. Neither view is a universal measure of what someone really looks like.
Why can a photograph look wrong when your reflection looks right?
You see your mirror image repeatedly while speaking, changing expression, and moving in a three-dimensional setting. A photograph instead gives you one fixed, two-dimensional view. In a March 4, 2026 interview with University of Virginia News, Kim Penberthy, a professor of research in psychiatric medicine, described the contrast this way: “In a mirror, people see a reversed, live, 3D version of themselves, and in a photo, they see a fixed, unreversed 2D snapshot.” University of Virginia News

Familiarity can influence what feels comfortable or flattering: the reflection is the face you are used to seeing, while a standard photograph usually shows the opposite orientation. But reversal by itself is not a complete explanation. A 2014 study on self-face memory found that mirror reversal did not change participants’ selections in its study, so it would be too strong to claim that people dislike photos simply because they are flipped. “Why am I not photogenic? How does camera distance change how your face looks?
A camera records a face from a particular position. When it is close, the difference in distance between nearer and farther features is proportionally greater: the nose may appear larger relative to the ears or the sides of the face. This effect is about viewpoint, not just the label on a lens. To keep a face about the same size in the frame while changing focal length, a photographer typically changes camera distance too. That change in position alters perspective and apparent facial shape. It is therefore misleading to say that a wide-angle lens always makes a face look distorted or that a longer lens alone fixes it without considering where the camera is.
Can you take a portrait that looks more natural?
If close-up selfies seem unlike the face you expect, try increasing the distance between the camera and your face, then crop the image or adjust framing. This reduces the depth-related perspective exaggeration associated with a very close viewpoint. The sources cited here do not test particular phones, apps, or selfie settings, so the result will depend on the device, framing, and how you view the finished picture.

Focal length and viewing distance also work together. Cooper, Piazza, and Banks’ 2012 Journal of Vision study connects perceived picture distortion to the distance at which viewers look at photographs. It notes that people tend to view long-focal-length pictures from too near and short-focal-length pictures from too far; it discusses 50 mm as a rule of thumb that can increase the odds of an undistorted percept. That is not a claim that 50 mm matches human vision or guarantees a flattering portrait: sensor format, camera position, framing, and the image’s display and viewing distance all matter. Do other people see you as you look in a mirror or in a photo?
Neither is a single definitive version. A mirror gives you a reversed, moving view in its surroundings; a photograph gives you a fixed view from one camera position, under particular framing and viewing conditions. Other people encounter you in motion and from changing angles, rather than as one still image. The difference between a reflection and a photograph explains why they can feel unlike each other, but it does not establish that one is objectively more accurate or more attractive.
