Why Do Oil Prices Rise When Conflict Threatens Supply Routes?

Oil prices can rise before a single barrel is lost because traders price the probability of disruption, higher shipping costs and slower deliveries into current contracts. The increase is a risk premium, not proof that a route has already closed. How large and lasting the move becomes depends on the route’s importance, alternatives, inventories, other production and demand.

The short answer: markets price risk before physical shortages appear

Crude oil is traded in a market that looks forward. Buyers, refiners, producers, ship owners and financial traders do not wait for official production data to confirm a shortage. If fighting threatens a route that carries oil, they reassess the likelihood that cargoes will be delayed, diverted, damaged or insured at a higher cost. That changed expectation can lift benchmark prices immediately.

This initial increase is commonly described as a risk premium. It reflects a higher probability of future scarcity. A threatened tanker lane can therefore affect prices even while ships are still sailing and inventories are still adequate. If the threat fades, the premium can disappear. If cargoes are actually blocked for long enough, the market must then deal with a physical shortfall, and the price response can be larger.

The same event can also raise the delivered cost of oil without removing the oil from world supply. Vessels may take a longer route, spend more days at sea, consume more fuel and require additional insurance. Those costs are incorporated into offers for crude and refined products, while delays can force refiners and other buyers to bid more aggressively for cargoes that arrive on time.

Four channels that connect a conflict to the oil price

1. Expectations of lost or delayed barrels

A chokepoint threat creates uncertainty about the next shipment, not only the shipment currently in transit. A buyer that normally relies on regular cargoes may seek replacement barrels early, while a trader may hold inventory rather than sell it immediately. Those precautionary decisions tighten the amount available in the prompt market and can move prices before a measured decline in production or exports.

Expectations are probabilistic. A credible threat to a route with no practical substitute generally commands a larger premium than an isolated incident on a route that can be bypassed. The market continually updates that premium as attacks, ceasefires, naval escorts, rerouting announcements and government statements change the perceived odds.

2. Delayed or blocked deliveries

If a route closes or becomes too dangerous, cargoes can be held at their origin, unloaded elsewhere or delivered later than scheduled. A delay matters because refiners and utilities need oil at particular times and locations. Even when the total number of barrels eventually reaches consumers, a temporary shortage in one basin can force buyers to pay more for nearby supply.

A complete closure is not required. Fewer sailings, longer queues, or vessels refusing a particular area can reduce effective supply. The price effect depends on how long the disruption lasts and how much spare inventory is available while the logistics system adjusts.

3. Longer voyages and higher freight and insurance bills

Rerouting preserves some deliveries but makes each delivered cargo more expensive. A longer voyage ties up a tanker for additional days, reducing the number of trips that vessel can make. Owners may charge more for the extra distance and fuel, and insurers may raise premiums for a war-risk area or for a route that now requires additional precautions.

These costs can show up in crude differentials, refined-product prices or tanker rates rather than in the benchmark immediately. A higher tanker rate is evidence of tighter shipping capacity; it is not, by itself, proof that the crude benchmark must rise by the same percentage. Refinery margins, inventories and competing supply can absorb some of the logistics shock.

4. Precautionary inventory and trading behavior

Companies that fear interruption may build stocks, reserve alternative vessels or sign replacement contracts. Financial traders can also buy futures as protection against a later price spike. Such activity increases demand for near-term barrels and contracts before the physical situation is fully known. Conversely, if traders conclude that supplies will remain available, they can unwind those positions and remove the premium quickly.

Why the Strait of Hormuz has an outsized effect

The Strait of Hormuz links the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider ocean trading system. Its importance comes from both volume and limited alternatives. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that an average of 20 million barrels per day passed through the strait in 2024, equal to about 20% of global petroleum-liquids consumption. That is a 2024 flow statistic reported by EIA in an article published June 16, 2025, not a live reading for 2026.

Because so much petroleum uses the passage, even a credible threat can affect many buyers at once. The market asks whether tankers can continue to transit, whether ships will wait outside the strait, and whether pipelines or other ports can handle part of the flow. When alternatives are limited, the expected cost of a disruption rises, and so does the potential risk premium.

Volume alone does not determine the price response. A large flow can continue if security improves, vessels accept the risk and inventories cover any short delay. The same volume becomes more consequential if the threat is sustained, insurance becomes unavailable or alternate pipelines cannot move enough oil.

What the Red Sea disruption shows about rerouting

Attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea began affecting operators in November 2023. Some companies diverted around the Cape of Good Hope rather than use the Bab el-Mandeb passage. The detour kept many cargoes moving but added distance and time to voyages.

In a report published October 11, 2024, EIA said crude-oil and oil-product flows through Bab el-Mandeb fell by more than 50% during the first eight months of 2024. The agency also documented longer shipping times and higher product-tanker rates in an account published February 1, 2024. Those observations demonstrate a real logistics shock, but they do not imply that half of global oil supply disappeared. Cargoes were rerouted, alternative suppliers were available and the market had time to adapt.

The episode also explains why freight markets and crude benchmarks can diverge. A tanker owner may charge substantially more for a longer, riskier voyage while the global crude price remains contained by weak demand, spare production or comfortable inventories. The cost increase is real for the affected voyage; it simply is not large enough, or broad enough, to force the same move in the benchmark.

Why a conflict does not guarantee a lasting oil-price surge

Several balancing forces can offset a route threat. Assess them before attributing a price move to conflict alone.

Route alternatives

Some cargoes can use pipelines, different ports or a longer sea route. These substitutes may be slower or more expensive, but they reduce the number of barrels that are permanently lost. A route with few alternatives generally produces a stronger response than one that can be bypassed at manageable cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Duration and severity

A brief stoppage can be covered by ships waiting offshore or by commercial inventories. A disruption lasting weeks or months changes refinery planning, encourages more production elsewhere and can alter which grades of crude are available. The market therefore reacts not only to what happened, but to the expected duration.

Inventories and spare supply

Stocks provide time for buyers to find replacement cargoes. Producers outside the affected area may increase output, and exporters may redirect barrels from one destination to another. The amount and speed of that response determine whether a shipping threat becomes a global shortage or mainly a regional logistics problem.

Demand conditions

Demand can either amplify or soften the effect. When consumption is strong, a modest supply concern competes for fewer available barrels. When demand is sluggish, additional supply or rerouting can be enough to prevent a sustained rise.

EIA’s review of 2024 illustrates the point. Despite geopolitical tensions and the Red Sea disruption, Brent crude remained between $70 and $90 per barrel during 2024. EIA attributed the relatively narrow range in part to sluggish demand and comparatively high supply outside the OPEC+ group. The range is a historical 2024 observation reported January 17, 2025; it is not a forecast or a current 2026 price.

How to analyze a threatened route step by step

  1. Measure the exposed flow. Establish how many barrels normally use the route and what share that represents of global consumption or the relevant regional market. Avoid treating a route’s total traffic as barrels that would all be lost.
  2. Identify workable substitutes. Check pipelines, alternate ports, neighboring chokepoints and longer sea routes. Record the extra sailing time and whether tankers, terminals and insurance are available.
  3. Separate threat from confirmed disruption. Look for evidence of halted sailings, cargo delays, closed terminals or vessels refusing the area. A warning or attack can raise the risk premium without creating a physical shortage.
  4. Estimate duration. Ask whether the event is a one-off incident, a continuing campaign, a formal blockade or a broader regional conflict. Markets price a different risk for hours, weeks and months.
  5. Check inventories and other production. Stocks and spare output can bridge a temporary gap. Their availability determines how much pressure reaches the benchmark.
  6. Watch freight separately from crude. Rising tanker rates, insurance premiums and voyage times show transport stress. They should not be translated one-for-one into a forecast for Brent or another crude benchmark.
  7. Test the demand backdrop. Strong consumption makes replacement barrels harder to find; weak consumption can absorb a logistics shock. Compare the route news with broader supply-and-demand data before assigning causation.

Comparing two route threats

Question Why it matters Hormuz example Bab el-Mandeb example
How much flow is exposed? A larger share of consumption creates a larger potential shortage. 20 million barrels per day on average in 2024, about 20% of global petroleum-liquids consumption (EIA, 2025). A comparable global-flow figure is not stated in the cited EIA material.
Are alternatives available? Substitutes limit permanently lost supply but may add cost and delay. EIA describes the strait as critical and notes few alternative routes if it closes. Operators diverted some voyages around the Cape of Good Hope.
What happened to traffic? Observed changes show whether the risk became a logistics disruption. A closure is not established by the 2024 statistic cited here. Crude and product flows fell more than 50% in the first eight months of 2024 (EIA, 2024).
What happened to cost? Freight and insurance can rise even when barrels still arrive. The cited material does not establish a specific freight increase. EIA reported longer voyages and higher product-tanker rates in early 2024.
Did the benchmark necessarily surge? Global supply, demand and inventories can offset route pressure. The effect depends on duration, alternatives and replacement supply. Brent stayed within a $70–$90 range during 2024 despite the disruption and other tensions.

What a headline price move does—and does not—tell you

A rise in Brent or another benchmark signals that market participants value prompt supply more highly, but it does not identify the exact cause by itself. The move may combine a route risk premium with changes in demand, production decisions, exchange rates, refinery operations or inventory expectations. Attribution requires matching the timing and size of the price change with evidence about the threatened route.

Likewise, a flat benchmark does not mean the conflict had no economic effect. Shippers may pay more for insurance, refiners may pay a premium for a specific grade, and consumers in a region may face higher delivered prices even while a globally traded benchmark remains stable. A rerouting episode can therefore be costly without producing a dramatic headline move.

The practical takeaway

Conflict threatens oil prices through probability, logistics and scarcity. The probability of interruption raises a risk premium; blocked or delayed cargoes reduce prompt availability; and rerouting raises freight, insurance and financing costs. The final price response is conditional, not automatic. For any episode, compare the exposed flow with realistic alternatives, estimate how long the danger may last, then weigh inventories, other production and demand. That framework explains why a strategically important chokepoint can move prices before supply data change—and why a serious shipping disruption can still leave a benchmark in a relatively narrow range.
