A trace shows how a request moved through a distributed system and helps locate an error or delay; alert rules and notification routing decide whether engineers are paged. Finding the cause in a trace does not automatically clear an alert, combine notifications, or change who receives them.
What tracing tells you—and what it does not
OpenTelemetry describes a trace as the path a request takes through a distributed system, represented by spans. Following that path can show where time was spent or an error occurred—for example, across a gateway, an application service, and a database. OpenTelemetry’s tracing documentation explains this diagnostic role.

A trace is not an alert-management policy. It does not, by itself, change thresholds, stop a rule from firing, assign incident ownership, or tell an on-call engineer what action to take. Those behaviors depend on alert configuration and incident processes.

The alert condition is still true
Tracing an outage may help explain a problem while the condition that triggered an alert—such as elevated latency or errors—continues. The alert can keep firing until its rule no longer matches or the configured notification behavior changes. Diagnosis and recovery are separate: identifying a slow dependency does not mean the user-facing service has recovered.

- FAST 15-MINUTE DEPLOYMENT – Provision and configure in just 15 minutes (down from 40+ minutes with previous models). Perfect for field technicians who need to get sites up and running quickly without deep networking expertise.
- UPGRADED PERFORMANCE – Powered by the Allwinner H618 processor with 1GB LPDDR4 RAM (double the previous generation). Enables accurate speed tests on gigabit connections and supports SNMP v3 encryption for enhanced security monitoring.
- PLUG-AND-PLAY SIMPLICITY – No complex configuration required. Simply connect to your network via the Gigabit Ethernet port, power up with the included USB-C cable, and start monitoring. Multi-VLAN support with just a few clicks in the interface.
- RISK MITIGATION FOR MSPs – Domotz maintains the operating system and security updates, transferring liability concerns away from your organization. Eliminates the security risks of deploying monitoring software on customer-managed servers or domain controllers.
- UNIVERSAL CONNECTIVITY – USB-C power port (more durable and universal than previous micro USB), Gigabit Ethernet port, and USB 2.0 port for future expansion. Premium casing designed for rack mounting or standalone deployment in professional environments.
Different rules detect different symptoms
One outage can affect several signals or services. A latency alert, an error-rate alert, and a dependency-health alert may all fire because each rule observes a different condition. A single event can also notify affected service owners and infrastructure teams. Google’s SRE incident-response guidance discusses how one event can generate multiple alerts and how grouping can reduce duplicated investigation. Google SRE: Managing Incidents
Alerts are routed independently
Separate teams may own different services or alert rules, so each can receive a page about the same underlying incident. A trace may help one engineer connect the symptoms, but the alerting system will not necessarily infer that connection or coordinate notification recipients unless it is configured to do so.

What should trigger a page?
Prometheus recommends alerting on symptoms associated with end-user pain, keeping alerts simple, and avoiding pages where there is no useful action. For example, user-facing latency or errors can warrant urgent attention; a lower-level component issue may not merit a page if the service remains healthy. There are also preventive exceptions: an approaching hard resource limit can justify intervention before users are affected. Prometheus: Alerting
The practical test is whether a person needs to act soon. Google SRE’s on-call guidance says, “All alerts should be immediately actionable.” Google SRE: What It Means to Be On-Call

How to reduce duplicate or unhelpful pages
- Review the expected action for every page. Ask what the on-call engineer should do immediately. If there is no timely action, consider whether the signal belongs on a dashboard, in a ticket, or in a lower-urgency notification instead of paging.
- Prioritize end-to-end symptoms. Alert on signals that reflect user impact, such as service latency or errors. Keep preventive alerts when an imminent limit presents a risk that requires human intervention.
- Link the page to diagnostic context. Include the relevant dashboard, trace view, or service console so the responder can investigate without first searching for the right tool or service.
- Group alerts that share an incident cause. Correlate notifications and coordinate ownership where they describe the same event. Preserve distinct alerts when they signal separate user impact or require different actions; grouping should reduce duplicate investigation, not hide useful information.
- Use playbooks and review alert history. Each page should point to response guidance. Review recurring alerts and postmortems together: postmortems provide detailed accounts of individual outages, while aggregated alert history can expose frequent or lower-impact noise that may not receive a full postmortem. Google SRE: Postmortem Culture
What tracing cannot guarantee across monitoring products
Whether a product correlates notifications, deduplicates pages, or resolves alerts automatically depends on its features and configuration. Tracing alone does not establish that behavior, and products should not be assumed to behave identically. The cited alerting guidance supports operational practices, not a vendor ranking. It also does not establish an industry-wide rate for how often engineers are paged after tracing an outage.
