There is no confirmed single evolutionary explanation for human kissing. Scientists discuss several hypotheses: kissing may help people assess a potential mate, strengthen social bonds, or represent a transformed form of lip-based grooming. A disease-screening explanation is sometimes suggested, but current evidence does not show that kissing evolved to detect pathogens.
The key distinction is between a behavior’s possible function today and its original evolutionary origin. Human studies can investigate what kissing does in relationships; only comparative evidence, especially from great apes, can seriously test where the behavior came from.

What an evolutionary explanation of kissing has to show
Asking why humans kiss can mean two different things. One question concerns function: what might a kiss accomplish for people now? It could convey affection, help people evaluate a partner, ease tension or reinforce a relationship. The other concerns origin: what behavior in an earlier human or ape ancestor could have developed into kissing?
Those questions require different evidence. A study showing that kissing is associated with attraction or closeness would support a possible current function, but it would not prove that the same function caused the first kiss to evolve. An origin theory needs a plausible ancestral behavior, a route by which natural selection could have favored it, and a close match between the proposed precursor and human kissing.

Mate assessment: could a kiss provide information about a partner?
The proposed mechanism
One influential proposal is that close contact lets a person gather chemical, olfactory or other sensory information while deciding whether to pursue a relationship. A 2025 comparative article describes mate-quality assessment as a possible explanation and discusses signals that might, in theory, include health, genetic compatibility, immune-system differences and characteristics of the oral microbiome.
A kiss places two people close enough for smell, taste, touch and breathing patterns to interact. In principle, those sensations could add information that is unavailable at conversational distance. If people who respond positively to such cues tend to form more successful partnerships, natural selection could favor a tendency to kiss or to value kissing in courtship.

What this theory does not establish
The proposal is not evidence that a kiss reliably diagnoses a person’s health, genes or immune system. Human attraction is influenced by many cues, and a single intimate interaction cannot be treated as a clinical or genetic test. The signals discussed in the literature are possibilities about what kissing might communicate, not validated measurements that people consciously or accurately read.
There is also a practical problem in testing the idea. A kiss often occurs after attraction has already developed. Researchers must separate information obtained from the kiss itself from information people had gathered through conversation, appearance, behavior and prior contact. They would also need to show that the sensory information changes mate choices in a consistent way, rather than merely accompanying an already formed preference.
Evidence that would strengthen the account
- Experiments showing that kissing changes judgments or decisions after other relationship cues are controlled.
- Reliable links between kiss-related sensory responses and independently measured biological traits.
- Cross-cultural or comparative patterns showing that the proposed information matters in courtship rather than only in established relationships.
Until such evidence is demonstrated, mate assessment is best described as a plausible function, not the established reason humans began kissing.

Social affiliation and bonding
The proposed function
A second account treats kissing as an affiliative behavior. On this view, a kiss helps people navigate relationships: it may express attachment, reduce interpersonal tension, mark reconciliation or strengthen an existing bond. The 2025 comparative article summarizes this as an argument present in the literature.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →This explanation does not require a kiss to carry precise biological information. Its value could lie in the interaction itself. A deliberate act of closeness can communicate investment and trust, while a familiar gesture may help partners maintain a relationship over time. The same broad function could apply in romantic relationships or, depending on the social context, among close relatives and other trusted companions.
Why bonding is not the same as an origin story
Showing that kissing can reinforce a bond today does not identify the first evolutionary step. Human beings may use an old behavior for a new purpose, or one behavior may have acquired several functions. A bonding account therefore needs evidence connecting kissing directly to relationship outcomes, not just evidence that people describe kissing as affectionate.
The comparative article also notes that the evolutionary history and potential correlates of this behavior have not been explored sufficiently. That limitation matters: without observations across closely related species or populations, it is difficult to tell whether bonding is an original function, a later cultural elaboration or one of several effects that arose after kissing already existed.
Evidence that would strengthen the account
- Direct measurements showing that kissing changes relationship security, conflict recovery or social cooperation.
- Consistent patterns linking the frequency or context of kissing to the strength and type of a relationship.
- Comparative observations of closely related apes using a similar gesture specifically to maintain or repair social bonds.
At present, social affiliation is a reasonable functional hypothesis, but it should not be presented as a proven original cause.

The grooming-origin hypothesis
What the hypothesis proposes
Adriano R. Lameira’s 2024 review examines several possible origins and focuses on a demanding comparative test. If kissing evolved from an ancestral grooming behavior, researchers should be able to identify a great-ape action that resembles human kissing in three ways: its form, its context and its function.

The proposed form includes lip protrusion and suction. The relevant context would involve individuals of different ages and sexes rather than a movement that occurs only during feeding or self-care. The proposed function would be bonding among close or kin individuals. Lameira discusses this possibility as a “groomer’s final kiss”: a lip-based grooming action performed at the end of a grooming interaction that could, over many generations, become a distinct social signal.
Why a behavioral match is essential
Similar-looking gestures are not enough. An ape may protrude its lips for feeding, threat, communication or grooming, but those actions cannot automatically be treated as ancestral kisses. The behavior must occur in the right social circumstances and do the right social work.
This is why the hypothesis remains unconfirmed. The available material does not establish whether post-conflict behavior in great apes includes the same lip protrusion or suction found in human kissing. Better descriptions and recordings of ape behavior are needed before researchers can determine whether a close precursor exists.
What would count as convincing comparative evidence?
- Document a repeated great-ape behavior involving lip protrusion or suction.
- Show that it occurs between individuals of different ages or sexes in appropriate social contexts.
- Demonstrate that the action helps maintain, repair or reinforce bonds among close or kin individuals.
- Establish that the behavior is sufficiently similar in form, context and function to make an evolutionary transition plausible.
Until those conditions are met, it is inaccurate to say that human kissing evolved from grooming. Grooming is a proposed ancestral source, not an established one.
Did kissing evolve to screen for disease?
What the broader idea says
Disease avoidance can influence mate preferences. A review of mate preferences and infectious disease discusses how people may respond to cues associated with illness or infection. That work is relevant background for thinking about attraction and health, but it is not direct evidence about the origin of kissing.
Why the pathogen claim is currently too strong
For kissing to be described as an evolved pathogen-screening mechanism, researchers would need to show that the act reliably exposes disease-related information and that people use that information to avoid infection or unsuitable mates. The available evidence does not demonstrate that sequence.

Kissing can also transmit microbes, so a simple “health check” explanation would have to account for both possible information and possible exposure. General research on disease cues in mate choice cannot be reworded as proof that kissing evolved to test a partner’s health. At most, it shows that disease-related preferences are a relevant neighboring topic.
What historical records can—and cannot—tell us
Historical evidence answers a different question from evolutionary evidence. A 2023 Science article by Troels Pank Arbøll and Sophie Lund Rasmussen uses Mesopotamian sources to place kissing in documented societies and discusses its role in disease transmission.
Written records can reveal how people practiced, interpreted or worried about kissing at particular times. They can show that the behavior had social meaning and that people recognized possible health consequences. They cannot identify the first population to kiss, date the behavior’s biological origin or prove which selective pressure produced it.
This distinction prevents a common error: treating the earliest surviving reference as the moment kissing evolved. Historical documents are evidence about recorded culture, not a time machine for deep human evolution.
How the main theories compare
| Theory | What it mainly explains | Evidence required | Evidence type | What is established now |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mate assessment | A possible current function of close contact during courtship. | Direct links between kissing, sensory cues and mate decisions, with other attraction cues controlled. | Human behavioral and sensory studies. | Proposed explanation; health, genetic, immune and oral-microbiome signals remain hypotheses. |
| Social affiliation and bonding | A possible role in maintaining, repairing or strengthening relationships. | Measured effects on bonding, tension, reconciliation or cooperation, plus consistent social patterns. | Human relationship research and comparative observations. | Plausible function, but evolutionary history and correlates remain insufficiently explored. |
| Groomer’s final kiss | A possible evolutionary origin in lip-based grooming. | A great-ape behavior matching human kissing in lip form, social context and bonding function. | Comparative-primate behavior. | Historical evolutionary hypothesis; the required ape match has not been established. |
| Pathogen or health screening | A proposed disease-avoidance function. | Evidence that kissing reveals infection risk and changes behavior in ways that reduce disease exposure. | Direct kissing studies, supported by disease-avoidance research. | Not demonstrated; broader research on disease cues in mate choice is only adjacent evidence. |
| Historical-record account | How kissing was practiced and understood in documented societies. | Texts or artifacts describing kissing and its consequences. | Historical sources. | Useful for social history, but incapable of establishing biological origin. |
How scientists could resolve the debate
Separate function from cause
Studies should first specify whether they are testing what kissing does now or why it evolved. A relationship experiment can test bonding without claiming an ancestral origin. A primate study can test an origin hypothesis without proving that modern couples kiss for the same reason.
Measure kissing itself
Evidence is stronger when the behavior under study is kissing rather than a broad category such as attraction or physical affection. Researchers should record the context, relationship, timing and sensory conditions, then compare outcomes with interactions that do not involve kissing.

Use predictions that could fail
Each hypothesis makes different predictions. Mate assessment predicts that kissing should provide information relevant to partner choice. Bonding predicts effects on affiliation or relationship maintenance. A grooming-origin theory predicts a close behavioral counterpart in great apes. A pathogen-screening theory predicts disease-sensitive responses tied specifically to kissing. A theory that cannot generate a distinctive prediction cannot be strongly tested.
Build the comparative record
For the grooming hypothesis, detailed observations of great apes are particularly important. Researchers need descriptions of lip movements, suction, participants, social setting and immediate consequences. Without that detail, an apparent resemblance may be superficial.
Why a single answer may be misleading
Evolution can preserve a behavior while its uses change. A gesture that began in one setting could later support courtship, reconciliation and long-term bonding. Individuals may also kiss for different reasons in different relationships. That possibility does not prove that all proposed theories are correct; it explains why a single-purpose story is difficult to establish.
