Why Do Gravitational-Wave Detectors Need Multiple Spacecraft and Telescopes? LISA Explained

They need multiple spacecraft because a gravitational-wave detector must compare the motion of separated, freely falling reference masses. LISA will place three spacecraft about 2.5 million kilometers apart in a triangular formation and use laser links to measure minute changes in those separations. Its telescopes are not mainly for taking pictures: they transmit and receive the laser beams that make the distance measurement possible.

Why do gravitational-wave detectors need multiple spacecraft and telescopes?

A useful first picture is three distant reference points connected by laser beams. Each point continually compares its distance to the other two. If a gravitational wave passes through the constellation, the measured separations change by an extraordinarily small amount. Detecting that changing pattern requires separated reference masses, long optical paths and repeated comparisons.

LISA—the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna—is designed around that idea. NASA describes three spacecraft following Earth around the Sun, with arms about 2.5 million kilometers long. The spacecraft are not joined by physical structures, and the triangle is not perfectly rigid or exactly equilateral at every moment. Orbital motion changes the arm lengths, so the mission must measure and process links whose light-travel times vary.

The arrangement solves several problems at once:

  • Separated spacecraft create a baseline long enough to respond to gravitational waves in the millihertz frequency range.
  • Free-falling proof masses provide the local references whose relative motion is measured.
  • Laser links compare masses on different spacecraft without requiring a physical connecting rod.
  • Telescopes send and collect enough laser light across the enormous gaps for interferometry.
  • Multiple links and time-delay interferometry help suppress laser-frequency noise and other disturbances.

ESA’s LISA project scientist Nora Lützgendorf summarized the basic reason for leaving Earth: “To expand the frontier of gravitational studies we must go to space.”

Why can’t this detector fit on one spacecraft?

A gravitational wave is a change in separation

Gravitational waves are not detected by watching a spacecraft move across the sky. They are detected through the tiny, time-dependent changes they produce in the relative distances between freely falling reference objects. A single spacecraft can hold local test masses, but it cannot provide the widely separated endpoints needed to measure a long-baseline change.

With three spacecraft, each vehicle supplies proof masses and optical equipment while the constellation provides several inter-spacecraft measurements. The wave passes through the whole formation, and the detector looks for the correlated change in measured separations rather than an absolute position of any spacecraft.

The baseline determines the useful frequency range

Long arms are important because lower-frequency waves vary more slowly and produce a signal that is difficult to measure with the short baselines available on Earth. LISA’s planned arm length—about 2.5 million kilometers—puts it in a different observational regime from terrestrial interferometers.

One rigid instrument would introduce the wrong disturbances

A physical boom connecting the endpoints would transmit vibration, thermal expansion, mechanical stress and other disturbances directly into the measurement. LISA instead lets the proof masses fall freely inside separate spacecraft. The spacecraft protect those masses from non-gravitational forces and maneuver to follow them.

What is inside each LISA spacecraft?

Two free-falling proof masses

Each spacecraft carries two proof masses. They are the local inertial references for the measurement. In the idealized description, a proof mass follows a gravitational free-fall path while the spacecraft itself moves around it as needed to shield and monitor it.

The measurement is therefore not “where is the spacecraft?” It is “how does the separation between proof masses on different spacecraft change?” That distinction matters because solar radiation pressure, charged particles and other non-gravitational forces act on the spacecraft but should not be allowed to define the gravitational-wave signal.

Drag-free spacecraft control

Drag-free operation makes the spacecraft follow its proof masses instead of forcing the masses to follow the spacecraft. Sensors detect the relative position, and micro-propulsion systems continually adjust the spacecraft so that it shields the masses from external disturbances.

This is why the spacecraft and payload must be treated as one measurement system. The optical bench, proof masses, sensors, control software and propulsion are not independent add-ons; errors in any of them can appear as a false distance change.

Laser and optical systems

Laser systems generate the light used to compare distant proof-mass references. The optical equipment must preserve phase and path-length information with extreme stability. Because the links are one-way and the arms change length, the recorded measurements cannot simply be interpreted as reflections from a single, fixed mirror.

What do LISA’s telescopes actually do?

They transmit and receive laser light

NASA describes LISA’s telescopes as approximately 30-centimeter optical telescopes used to send and receive laser light across the roughly 2.5-million-kilometer separation. At one end, a telescope expands and directs the outgoing beam. At the other, it collects the extremely faint incoming beam so the interferometric measurement can be made.

The optical path is part of the detector

A telescope is not merely a delivery tube for the laser. Any change in its optical path—caused by deformation, temperature or alignment—can look like a change in the distance being measured. The telescope structure and its interfaces therefore need exceptional path-length stability. A telescope-induced signal could mask a real gravitational wave or imitate one.

They are not conventional astronomical cameras

The word “telescope” can suggest an instrument that forms visible-light images of stars or black holes. That is not the primary LISA function. These telescopes support precision laser ranging between spacecraft. The sources describing LISA’s optical subsystem establish the laser-link role; they do not establish that every possible electromagnetic follow-up capability is part of the mission.

How the LISA measurement works

  1. Proof masses provide inertial references. Two masses on each spacecraft are kept as free from non-gravitational disturbance as possible.
  2. The spacecraft follow the masses. Drag-free control keeps the vehicle centered around its proof masses rather than using the vehicle as the primary reference.
  3. Lasers cross the constellation. Telescopes transmit and receive beams between spacecraft separated by millions of kilometers.
  4. Interferometry records phase changes. The incoming and local laser information are compared to detect minute changes in optical path length.
  5. The links are combined in data processing. The arms vary as the constellation orbits, so each measurement has a different and changing delay.
  6. Time-delay interferometry suppresses laser noise. The LISA Consortium describes this technique as combining link measurements with their appropriate delays so laser-frequency fluctuations are canceled even when the arms are unequal and changing.
  7. Scientists search for a gravitational-wave pattern. The desired signal is a coherent, time-dependent change in the separations of the free-falling references, not a simple displacement of one spacecraft.

This explains why the mission cannot be reduced to “three mirrors and a laser.” The proof masses define the inertial reference, the spacecraft provide protection and control, the telescopes deliver the optical links, and the data analysis removes noise introduced by unequal moving arms.

Why does LISA use such long arms?

The LISA Consortium gives a target frequency range of 0.1 millihertz to 0.1 hertz. That is the millihertz regime: far below the principal band of ground-based gravitational-wave observatories. A long space-based baseline gives the detector a way to measure slow variations that would be inaccessible or overwhelmed by terrestrial noise in a ground facility.

The frequency range determines which systems are promising sources. LISA is intended to study signals including compact binaries and massive black-hole systems whose gravitational-wave evolution appears in its band. Those examples are illustrative, not a guaranteed list of detections or a prediction of a fixed number of events.

Space also removes the seismic and many local environmental limitations of a terrestrial installation, although it introduces its own challenges: changing arm lengths, spacecraft charging, radiation pressure, thermal stability, pointing and the need to maintain a reliable laser link across interplanetary distances.

LISA and ground-based detectors: complementary, not competing

Feature LISA Ground-based interferometers
Location Three spacecraft in a heliocentric formation following Earth around the Sun Facilities on Earth
Baseline About 2.5 million kilometers per arm Terrestrial interferometer arms, much shorter than LISA’s inter-spacecraft links
Main frequency emphasis Approximately 0.1 millihertz to 0.1 hertz Higher-frequency gravitational waves
Reference system Free-falling proof masses inside drag-free spacecraft Test masses operated in ground-based vacuum facilities and isolated from environmental motion
Optical measurement One-way laser links between spacecraft, combined with time-delay interferometry Ground-based interferometer configurations with laser measurements along terrestrial arms
Illustrative science Compact binaries and massive black-hole systems that radiate in LISA’s band Sources whose signals occupy the higher-frequency ground-observatory band

The difference is best understood as coverage. LISA is not intended to replace ground observatories, and ground observatories cannot simply be enlarged until they become a LISA equivalent. Their environments, baselines and frequency bands are different, so observations from both kinds of detector can provide complementary information about the gravitational-wave universe.

Why three spacecraft instead of two?

Two spacecraft would create a single separation to monitor. Three create a triangular constellation with multiple inter-spacecraft links and two proof-mass references on every vehicle. That geometry supplies more than one measured arm, allowing the analysis to combine links and reject noise that is specific to a single optical path or spacecraft.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The three-spacecraft arrangement also makes the detector a distributed instrument rather than a single range measurement. A gravitational wave affects the links according to its direction and polarization, while local disturbances generally enter through particular spacecraft, lasers or optical paths. The constellation’s multiple measurements give data analysis more information with which to separate those effects.

The triangle should not be imagined as a perfectly rigid structure. The spacecraft orbit the Sun, the arm lengths vary, and the light does not arrive at all endpoints simultaneously. Those facts are central design constraints, which is why time-delay interferometry is required.

Mission status and planned schedule

LISA is a future mission, not an operational observatory. NASA identifies ESA as the lead agency and NASA as a partner, with contributions that include laser systems, telescope systems, charge-management devices and data-analysis systems.

ESA’s Science Programme Committee approved the mission on 25 January 2024. In that announcement, ESA reported a planned 2035 launch on an Ariane 6 rocket. “Planned” is important: the date describes the schedule stated in the 2024 announcement, not a completed launch or a guarantee that the timetable cannot change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ESA project scientist Oliver Jennrich described the broader scientific value this way: “For centuries we have been studying our cosmos through capturing light. Coupling this with the detection of gravitational waves is bringing a totally new dimension to our perception of the Universe.” LISA’s role is to add that gravitational-wave dimension in a frequency range that ground instruments do not cover well.

Common misunderstandings about LISA

  • “The spacecraft are connected by a giant cable.” No. The connection is an optical measurement made with laser links across free space.
  • “The triangle is a rigid, exact equilateral shape.” No. The arms are about 2.5 million kilometers and vary as the constellation follows its orbit.
  • “The telescopes photograph the black holes.” No. Their primary job is to transmit and receive the laser light used for interferometry.
  • “A passing wave simply pushes the spacecraft.” That is too simple. The target is the tiny change in measured separations between free-falling proof masses.
  • “LISA makes ground detectors obsolete.” No. The missions observe different frequency bands and source populations, so they are complementary.
  • “The 2035 launch has already happened.” No. It was the planned date reported by ESA in January 2024.
