Cryptocurrency prices often fall together because investors are exposed to a shared crypto-market factor and may reduce risk across many holdings at the same time. Connections with stocks and other financial assets can strengthen during turbulent periods, making a broad selloff look synchronized. That pattern describes co-movement, not proof that Bitcoin caused every altcoin to fall or that one news event explains every token’s return.
The strength and meaning of the relationship depend on the dates studied, the return frequency, the assets included and the market regime. Historical research therefore explains why crypto prices can move together without establishing that they always will.

What it means when cryptocurrencies fall together
When several coins decline during the same interval, analysts are observing co-movement. A correlation statistic measures whether returns tend to rise or fall together over a specified sample. A positive correlation means that gains and losses often point in the same direction; it does not identify a cause, a leader or a mechanism.
For example, a high Bitcoin–altcoin correlation could result from investors reacting to a common piece of information, from a broad change in risk appetite, or from trading and funding conditions that affect many assets at once. The statistic alone cannot tell which explanation is correct. It also cannot show whether Bitcoin moved first, whether an external shock affected both markets, or whether leverage and investor flows magnified the move.

“Crypto prices” is not one uniform series. Bitcoin, Ether, smaller tokens, stablecoins and equity indices represent different markets and can respond differently. Any comparison should identify the assets, the dates and whether it measures daily returns, intraday reactions or volatility spillovers.
A shared crypto factor links many assets
An International Monetary Fund working paper, The Crypto Cycle and US Monetary Policy (August 4, 2023), identifies a common statistical component called the “crypto factor.” In the authors’ analysis, this factor explains 80% of variation in crypto prices. That figure describes the explanatory power of a model over its sample; it does not mean that 80% of every coin is identical, nor that the factor is a coin, fund or product that mechanically controls the market.
In plain language, many tokens can carry overlapping exposure to the same broad conditions. When investors reassess the attractiveness or risk of crypto as an asset class, they may change positions across several holdings rather than trade each token independently. A common factor captures that market-wide component, while the remaining variation reflects asset-specific news and other differences.
The same IMF paper reports that the factor’s correlation with equity markets increased as institutional investors entered crypto markets. The timing is consistent with broader common exposures and changing participation, but timing by itself does not prove that institutional entry caused the correlation change.

Correlation with stocks has changed by period
Crypto’s relationship with equities is time-dependent. An IMF discussion published January 11, 2022, reports that the correlation between Bitcoin and S&P 500 daily returns was 0.01 during 2017–19 and 0.36 during 2020–21. These are historical sample estimates, not a current reading or a permanent rule.
| Measure | Scope and date | Reported result | What it does and does not mean |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin–S&P 500 daily-return correlation | IMF analysis, 2017–19 | 0.01 | Very little linear co-movement in that sample; it does not describe later periods. |
| Bitcoin–S&P 500 daily-return correlation | IMF analysis, 2020–21 | 0.36 | A stronger positive relationship in that sample; it is not a live or universal estimate. |
| Bitcoin spillovers to equity-price volatility | IMF Cryptic Connections note, data and method specified in the January 11, 2022 publication | About 14–18% of variation | A model-based share for the study’s sample, not a general fraction of all equity volatility. |
| Bitcoin spillovers to equity returns | Same IMF note and scope | About 8–10% of variation | A study-specific estimate; it does not say Bitcoin caused that percentage on every day. |
| Common crypto factor | IMF working paper, August 4, 2023 | 80% of variation in crypto prices in the analysis | Statistical commonality across the paper’s crypto-price data, not identical behavior by every token. |
The IMF also reports that crypto–equity spillovers tended to rise during high-volatility episodes, including the March 2020 market turmoil and sharp Bitcoin moves in early 2021. A calm-period correlation can therefore understate how tightly markets behave when investors are under pressure.
Why turbulence can synchronize declines
Roshan Iyer and Adina Popescu’s IMF working paper, New Evidence on Spillovers Between Crypto Assets and Financial Markets (September 29, 2023), finds that spillovers grow during turbulence linked to negative economic-financial news, crypto-market events or external shocks. In a stressed market, information and portfolio adjustments can pass between assets more intensely than they do in ordinary conditions.

A shock outside crypto can raise stress everywhere, and a crypto event can coincide with weakness in other assets.

The IMF’s Cryptic Connections: Spillovers between Crypto and Equity Markets note says Bitcoin spillovers to equity indices rose after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Its estimates that Bitcoin spillovers explained about 14–18% of variation in equity-price volatility and 8–10% of variation in equity returns apply only to the note’s data, period and method. They should not be read as a permanent share of market movements.
How a broad crypto selloff can develop
- A common risk assessment changes. Investors receive information or experience a market event that changes how they value crypto risk. The response can involve several holdings because they share the broad crypto factor.
- Positions are adjusted across the market. A portfolio decision to reduce crypto exposure can produce selling in Bitcoin and other tokens at the same time. The existence of common exposure explains simultaneous direction, but not identical percentage losses.
- Connections with other markets become more visible. When volatility rises, the IMF research finds that spillovers between crypto and financial assets tend to increase. Equity weakness and crypto weakness can therefore appear together even when neither market is the sole cause.
- Trading conditions can amplify the move. Leverage, liquidity and investor flows may enlarge an initial change. The cited correlation and spillover statistics do not by themselves measure which of these mechanisms dominated on a particular day, so they should be treated as possible amplifiers rather than a proven explanation for every selloff.
What monetary policy research does—and does not—show
Macro explanations require care because different studies ask different questions. The 2023 IMF crypto-factor paper reports that U.S. Federal Reserve tightening reduces its crypto factor through a risk-taking channel, in a pattern similar to equities. This supports a relationship between monetary-policy tightening and the modeled common crypto component in that study.
A February 2023 New York Fed Staff Report, The Bitcoin–Macro Disconnect, uses intraday data and an event study of macroeconomic news. Its authors’ summary states: “The key result is that, unlike other U.S. asset classes, Bitcoin is orthogonal to monetary and macroeconomic news.” “Orthogonal” here means that, in the report’s specified events, period and method, the measured intraday Bitcoin response was not systematically related to those news surprises.
These findings are not automatically contradictory. The IMF paper studies a common factor and a broader policy relationship, while the New York Fed report tests short-horizon responses to selected macroeconomic announcements. Different horizons, samples, variables and identification methods can produce different results. Neither supports the universal claim that Federal Reserve decisions always dictate crypto prices or that macro news can never matter.

Why one token may not follow the group
A shared factor leaves room for asset-specific movement. A token can outperform a falling market or decline more sharply because of an event specific to that asset, its network, its market structure or its investor base. The research supports common factors and changing interdependence, not identical responses by every cryptocurrency.
This is why a chart showing Bitcoin and several altcoins moving down together should not be treated as proof that Bitcoin mechanically controls them. Bitcoin may be the largest or most visible market in the comparison, but correlation does not establish leadership or causation. A separate event can affect one token while the common factor affects the rest, producing a divergence even during a broad decline.
How to read a crypto-correlation claim
Before accepting a statement that “crypto moves together,” check the dimensions below. Each one can change the conclusion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What time window was used? | The IMF’s 0.01 and 0.36 Bitcoin–S&P 500 coefficients come from different historical periods. A result from 2017–19 cannot be presented as a result for 2020–21 or today. |
| What return frequency was measured? | Daily-return correlation, intraday event responses and volatility spillovers answer different questions. They should not be substituted for one another. |
| Which assets were included? | Bitcoin, Ether, other tokens, stablecoins and equity indices have different exposures. A result for Bitcoin is not automatically a result for every cryptocurrency. |
| Is the statistic correlation or transmission? | Correlation describes co-movement. Spillover models examine connected movements and possible transmission, but their conclusions remain tied to the model and sample. |
| What market regime was studied? | Research finds spillovers tend to rise during turbulence. A calm-period estimate may not describe a risk-off episode. |
| Does the result establish cause? | No correlation figure alone identifies the first mover, a common cause or the role of leverage and flows. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- “All cryptocurrencies always move together.” The common factor explains substantial variation in the IMF analysis, but asset-specific movements remain and relationships change over time.
- “Bitcoin caused every altcoin decline.” Co-movement does not establish causal direction. A common shock or an external market event could affect both.
- “The IMF correlation is today’s correlation.” The reported coefficients are tied to 2017–19 and 2020–21 samples.
- “The Federal Reserve controls crypto prices.” The IMF and New York Fed studies use different designs and reach differently qualified results. Neither justifies a universal rule.
- “An 80% common factor means coins are interchangeable.” The 80% figure is model-based variation explained in one analysis, not a claim of identical risk, utility or performance.
- “A spillover percentage is a causal share.” The 14–18% and 8–10% figures are estimates from the IMF note’s specified method and data, not a daily accounting of who caused what.
What synchronized declines mean for diversification
Holding several cryptocurrencies does not guarantee that a portfolio will behave differently in a stressed market. If many holdings share the common crypto factor, a broad risk reduction can affect them together, and the IMF research indicates that cross-market spillovers may intensify during turbulence. Diversification can still involve assets with different exposures, but the relevant correlation is the one measured over the regime and horizon that matter to the decision.
Best Value
For analysis, compare calm and turbulent periods separately rather than relying on one full-sample number. Label whether the comparison uses daily returns, intraday news responses or volatility. Keep Bitcoin, other tokens, stablecoins and non-crypto assets distinct, and describe any causal interpretation as a hypothesis unless the study design supports it.
The practical answer
Cryptocurrency prices fall together when a large share of the market responds to common risk conditions, a shared crypto factor and, at times, stronger links with equities and other financial markets. Turbulence can increase spillovers, making synchronized losses more visible. But the relationship is not fixed: the IMF found a Bitcoin–S&P 500 daily-return correlation of 0.01 in 2017–19 and 0.36 in 2020–21, while other research using different methods found different short-horizon macro responses.
The safest interpretation is therefore conditional: crypto often has common market exposure, especially during stress, yet no single statistic proves that Bitcoin led a decline, that monetary policy caused it, or that every token should move the same way.
