Why Do Astronauts See Flashes of Light With Their Eyes Closed?

Astronauts see flashes with their eyes closed because energetic particles can trigger the retina or other parts of the visual system. The brain interprets that activity as light even when no visible light enters through the eyelids. NASA investigations support the broad particle-induced effect; the exact microscopic mechanism, including a possible role for Cerenkov radiation, remains an area of scientific interpretation rather than a single conclusively proven pathway.

The short answer: the flash is generated inside the visual system

When an astronaut closes their eyes, the eyelids block ordinary photons from a lamp, display or sunlit window. They do not necessarily block energetic particles traveling through space and reaching tissues in or near the eye. A particle can interact with retinal cells or visual neurons, causing electrical activity that the brain interprets as a point, streak, cloud or flash.

This is a phosphene: a sensation of light produced without light entering the eye in the normal way. The astronaut is not seeing an illuminated object outside the spacecraft, and the eye is not emitting a visible spark. The perception is real, but its trigger is activity within the visual apparatus.

NASA astronaut Don Pettit described the basic process in NASA’s account of International Space Station observations: “When a cosmic ray happens to pass through the retina it causes the rods and cones to fire, and you perceive a flash of light that is really not there.” That description captures the established part of the explanation. Scientists have proposed several ways the particle’s energy could produce the signal, and the available evidence does not require choosing only one of them.

When were the flashes first reported?

Apollo 11 provided the first widely documented reports

Apollo astronauts began reporting the phenomenon during Apollo 11. They described colorless flashes while in darkness with their eyes closed, an experience unexpected enough to prompt NASA investigation. Reports on Apollo 12 and Apollo 13 led to more systematic attempts to record when the flashes occurred and what kinds of particles might be associated with them.

Later Apollo crews observed the effect under dedicated conditions

NASA documented dedicated observation sessions on Apollo 15, Apollo 16 and Apollo 17. During these sessions, astronauts paid attention to the flashes while dark-adapted and recorded their perceptions. The Apollo program therefore supplied both spontaneous reports and observations made as part of an organized investigation, rather than a single anecdote from one flight.

The Apollo 17 mission press material describes the subject as the “Visual Light Flash Phenomenon.” NASA technical reports from the program discuss cosmic nuclei interacting with the visual apparatus and examine several possible physical pathways from a particle track to a perceived flash.

Why closing the eyes does not stop the effect

Eyelids are effective at blocking visible light because they form an opaque barrier to ordinary photons. The flashes have a different proposed source. Energetic particles can pass through the eyelid and reach the eye or nearby structures; the visual system can then be stimulated directly. No light from the cabin has to pass through the pupil, and no external flash has to occur in the spacecraft.

The distinction is important because “seeing” normally suggests that light traveled from an object into the eye. In this case, the order is reversed: a particle interaction creates activity in the sensory tissue, and the brain labels that activity as a visual event. Keeping the eyes closed removes most ordinary visual input, making the internally generated sensation easier to notice.

How a particle can become a perceived flash

The exact chain can be described in stages, while recognizing that researchers have proposed more than one microscopic route.

  1. An energetic particle reaches the visual apparatus. Cosmic particles or secondary particles produced by them can travel through the astronaut and interact with the eye or nearby visual tissue.
  2. Energy is deposited along a track or in a localized region. The interaction can ionize or excite atoms and molecules, or otherwise perturb cells and neural structures.
  3. Retinal or neural activity is triggered. Rods and cones may fire, or neurons farther along the visual pathway may be excited directly. A signal therefore begins even though the eye is closed.
  4. The brain interprets the signal as light. Visual processing has no requirement that every signal originate from a normal image. When the relevant neurons fire in a suitable pattern, the conscious result can be a dot, streak, cloud or brief flash.

These stages explain why the experience is visual without being an image of the surrounding spacecraft. The shape and appearance depend on where energy is deposited and how many cells or neurons are recruited, not on an illuminated object that the astronaut could identify.

What mechanisms have scientists proposed?

Direct stimulation of the retina

The most accessible explanation is that a particle passes through the retina and stimulates photosensitive cells. In this account, rods and cones respond to the particle’s passage much as they respond to photons, sending a signal through the ordinary visual pathway. Pettit’s description of cosmic rays causing rods and cones to fire expresses this model in straightforward terms.

Ionization or excitation inside the eye

A particle can deposit energy by ionizing or exciting tissue. The resulting chemical and electrical changes could produce a phosphene even if the particle does not act like a visible photon at a rod or cone. NASA’s technical reviews list ionization and excitation as possible ways to connect a particle track with the light sensation.

Direct excitation of neural tissue

The retina is not the only candidate target. A sufficiently energetic interaction near the visual pathway could excite neural tissue directly. This possibility helps explain why the broad description is “particle interaction with the visual apparatus” rather than a claim that every flash must begin in one specific retinal cell type.

Cerenkov radiation generated within the eye

Cerenkov radiation is another studied explanation. When a charged particle moves through a material faster than light can travel through that material, it can produce a faint optical emission. In the eye, that internally generated radiation could stimulate photoreceptors and be perceived as a flash. The light would be produced within the eye rather than entering through the pupil from the cabin.

A PubMed-indexed study titled “Role of Cerenkov radiation in the eye-flashes observed by Apollo astronauts” measured sensitivity to Cerenkov radiation in three subjects exposed to pulses of pions and muons. The study reported that the measured sensitivity was consistent with descriptions of colorless flashes in deep space and with Apollo reports of rates as high as two flashes per minute. That result supports Cerenkov radiation as a compatible mechanism; it does not establish that every astronaut’s flash is generated exclusively by Cerenkov light or that the same rate applies on every mission.

What the investigations actually showed

Evidence or setting What was observed or tested What it supports
Apollo 11 reports Astronauts reported colorless flashes while dark-adapted with their eyes closed. The phenomenon occurs in deep space without ordinary visual light entering the eye.
Apollo 12 and Apollo 13 follow-up Additional crew reports motivated NASA to investigate the flashes systematically. The observations were repeatable enough to justify dedicated study rather than being treated as an isolated incident.
Apollo 15, 16 and 17 sessions Crews conducted organized observations of the phenomenon. Researchers could compare astronaut descriptions with controlled observation periods.
ALFMED, the Apollo Light Flash Moving Emulsion Detector A detector was designed to record particle tracks for comparison with astronaut reports. Particle passage could be investigated alongside the visual sensations instead of relying only on memory.
Laboratory Cerenkov study Three subjects were tested with pion and muon pulses; sensitivity to Cerenkov radiation was measured. The measured sensitivity was compatible with Apollo descriptions, including reported rates as high as two per minute.
International Space Station reports Astronauts described dots, streaks and clouds associated with cosmic-ray events. The effect was not limited to the Apollo era, although ISS descriptions do not establish the Apollo study’s mission-specific rate.

What ALFMED contributed

ALFMED stands for Apollo Light Flash Moving Emulsion Detector. It was a historical research instrument, not a consumer viewing device. Its purpose was to preserve evidence of particle tracks in an emulsion so those tracks could be compared with the times astronauts reported seeing flashes.

That approach addressed a central difficulty: a flash lasts only an instant and cannot be photographed as an ordinary scene. A particle detector can provide a physical record of passage, while the astronaut supplies the perceptual report. Comparing the two kinds of observation helped NASA evaluate whether particle interactions were a plausible cause.

The detector did not by itself settle every detail of how the eye converts a particle into a visual sensation. It strengthened the connection between the reported flashes and radiation events, while the retinal, neural and Cerenkov explanations remained mechanisms to be evaluated.

What do the flashes look like?

Astronaut descriptions include “dots, streaks or clouds” as well as colorless flashes. Those forms are consistent with different particle tracks and different amounts or locations of energy deposition. A short, localized interaction may be perceived as a point; a longer track or a broader neural response may appear extended.

Colorless does not mean the sensation is imaginary or too faint to matter. It indicates that the reports did not resemble a normal colored scene. The brain was registering a transient visual signal without enough information to construct an ordinary object or landscape.

How often do astronauts see them?

The strongest numerical statement in the available evidence is the PubMed-indexed study’s reference to reported rates as high as two flashes per minute on Apollo 11 through Apollo 17. That is an upper reported rate associated with those mission accounts and the study’s comparison; it is not a typical rate for every astronaut, nor a prediction for a particular flight.

There is no established contemporary population estimate in the cited NASA and PubMed material that tells us how frequently astronauts across missions experience the flashes. ISS reports confirm that later crews described the effect, but they do not supply a universal mission-by-mission frequency. A careful account therefore gives the two-per-minute figure its Apollo and study context instead of presenting it as a standard human rate.

How Apollo evidence differs from ISS reports

Apollo evidence combines early crew reports, dedicated observation sessions and the ALFMED detector work. Those missions supplied the historical foundation for linking the flashes with cosmic particles and for testing physical explanations.

ISS material provides later astronaut testimony, including Pettit’s explanation of rods and cones firing when a cosmic ray crosses the retina. The ISS descriptions—dots, streaks and clouds—show that astronauts continued to notice comparable visual sensations in a different mission era. They should not be treated as a repeat of the Apollo detector experiment or as proof of the same measured rate.

What the phenomenon is not

  • It is not ordinary cabin light passing through closed eyelids. The proposed trigger is particle interaction within or near the visual system.
  • It is not necessarily an external flash in space. A report of a flash does not mean a nearby spacecraft, instrument or piece of debris emitted visible light.
  • It is not the eye visibly glowing. The perceived light is a brain-generated visual sensation, even when Cerenkov radiation is considered as an intermediate process inside the eye.
  • It is not proof that one microscopic mechanism explains every case. Retinal stimulation, ionization or excitation, direct neural excitation and Cerenkov radiation are compatible proposals discussed in NASA and scientific sources.

What remains uncertain

The broad conclusion is well supported: energetic particles can interact with the visual apparatus and produce flashes perceived with the eyes closed. The unresolved question is the relative contribution of each pathway in a particular event. A particle may stimulate retinal cells directly, generate secondary optical emission, alter tissue through ionization or excite neural structures farther along the pathway.

The Cerenkov experiments are important because they test a concrete mechanism under laboratory conditions and find sensitivity compatible with Apollo descriptions. Compatibility is not the same as exclusive proof. The reports also do not establish that all flashes have identical appearances, rates or physical origins.

For readers, the safest summary is therefore two-layered: the flashes are radiation-triggered visual sensations, and the precise conversion from particle passage to conscious light remains a subject of scientific investigation.
